I have the 5100 and recommend it highly. I have many many cameras going back to the '60's (I am an ex pro and old) and it is my favorite camera of all time (other than the Nikon f2, a real dinosaur) including ones that cost twice as much like the Nikon d90, another great camera.

You can compare both the 3100 and 5100 but I would bet the 3100 is not any better. 24 mp versus 16 really is not an advantage. If you know what you are doing quality will be the same. Save the money and put it toward a flash or lens. The built- in flashes are not very powerful. On the other hand, more pictures are ruined by using direct flas than just about anything but a good one is necessary for many situations.

There are two kinds of quality: visual and technical. So 24 mp might be yield technically superior images but so what? (Actually, anything above 12 mp isn't all that different. A Canon g12 at 10 mp, for example, will rival any digital out there for great shots in 95% of all situations.)

Which one would you recommend if I can get both with the same price? That is not so easy to choose them since they are so similar, but D5100 (from 2011) is one year older than d3200 (from 2012). Please help me with that.

Traded my D5100 for D3200 (I needed the 60fps in video mode) and so far I miss the free screen of the D5100, but it's not a big deal. Both cameras are great, I think that for stills the D5100 is even a little better. It's much cheaper and I believe you would be very happy with it!

for beginners it's great!! and very easy to use. D5100 is more complicated.

The sequence of selection can go this way: D5100- D3200- D3100. The later two more useful for a newbee as boths have Guide Mode in them. But better features are in the D5100. You can save your own Settings in Set picture Control, thus getting your favorite settings saved for later use. D5100 also has special effects and a rotatable LCD making it possible to shoot at very difficult angles easily.

From what I've read the D3200 is basically the same camera as the D3100 but with better video capabilities (namely a more efficient continuous AF), so unless you're planning on shooting a lot of videos the D5100 is a superior camera...

i recommend the d3200 because the image sensor is the newest sony sensor similar to the NEX-7 sensor. This sensor and the sensor from the fuji xpro are the best aps-c sensors on the market at this moment.
