Upgrade to D700, or to D7000: that is the question

HK-Lam | Asked  11 months ago | Last response was 10 months ago

I  currently have a D90, and three DX lenses, i.e. Nikkor 18-200, Nikkor 35mm and Tokina 11-16mm, and a full-frame lense, i.e. Nikkor 50mm f1.8.

I am looking at upgrading the D90 to the D7000 or to a second-hand D700. I understand that I will have to look at investing in some new lenses if I am to go for the D700. Would I be better off to just upgrade to D7000 and continue using the lenses I already have.

I am an enthusiast covering mainly travel and landscape and nature closeups.

Which camera do you recommend for HK-Lam?

Nikon D700 - $3,400
12.1 MP|Full frame CMOS|3" LCD
Nikon D7000 - $897
16.1 MP|APS-C CMOS|3" LCD

D700 is a better path if you only take still images. Video capability in D700 is limited compare to D7000. However, the large sensor and low noise  in low light condition allows you to take expressive images. If you are buying a used body, the cost between the two is about the same. You can start off with your existing 50mm and maybe add another wide angle zoom lenses with a large aperture for your landscape and travel.

d700 wud be a real upgrade for you considering the existing d90 - but if u want new features and use existing lenses you may consider the d7000

Well, if you were a wedding photographer than, i would say you must buy D700 and use it with 50mm. And on D90 just put that tokina lense.

But in your case, I would suggest to buy maybe even D3200, or wait D600.
