First dSLR, big decision: Nikon (D3200 or D5100) or Canon (EOS 650D).

Hi all!

After my Sony NEX-5 was stolen a while back I now want to level up and move into the beginner dSLR range. Over the last couple weeks I have been reading up a lot on these cameras and I have played with some of them. This has not made things easier....

Here's the deal:

I am currently in Beijing. In about two weeks I will start a four month trip through Asia. I am dire need to start practicing with a camera and I could use some advice on my purchasing decision. If you feel another camera better suits my needs, let me know!

My requirements:

- Great image quality: I want to remember this trip and print out some of the photos, 120x80cm should be crisp!

- One great lens: I don't want to be switching or carrying extra's on this trip; 18-105 or 18-135 kit lenses are my current favorites.

- I do prefer a flip-out screen, would like the quick "point-and-shoot" photos to come out good and the camera will receive a little bit of a beating during such a trip.

Last, this might be the start of a camera/lens collection. Canon or Nikon?

Which camera do you recommend for Ton-van-Eck?

Nikon D5100 - $497
16.1 MP|APS-C CMOS|3" LCD
Nikon D3200 - $547
24.1 MP|APS-C CMOS|3" LCD
Canon 650D - $527
17.9 MP|APS-C CMOS|3" LCD

Thanks guys! I actually just bought the Canon EOS 650D.

It is more comfortable in the hand and the folding screen is very useful. I trust 18MP will be good enough, but we will have to wait and see.

flip screen gives greater advantage to creativity hence i would let the higer mpx race run aside

considering the costs - d5100 seems better over canon - with the money saved - can buy a 18-105mm or a 18-270/18-300 kind of one lens if money permits which i would never have to change

Take the D3200, why ? Because the sensor is developed by Sony and these are the best sensors out there at the moment. I think the sensor is very similar to the Sony NEX-7 sensor and no 24MP on an APS-C sensor is not to much. Go to www.dxomark.com and compare the D3200 to other higher priced cameras, you will see the D3200 get 81 Points (like the NEX-7) and that is a really really good value. The other thing is the body, i cant tell you wich of these cameras have the best body or features. But when you search for image quality, the D3200 is the king of these 3 cams. When you want to print the images up to 120x80cm take the D3200, i have the NEX-7 and i'm absolutely satisfied, the 24MP gives you tons of details and (when you have the right lens) really sharp results.

I think you made the right choice ... touch screen, full HD filming with 5D Mark II pedigree, Manual control while filming (Nikon doesn't allow this) and you can take pictures too while recording ... more on canon-rebel-t4i-650d-dslr-fast-start at www.creativelive.com

Four months later I am still convinced I made the right decision. The pictures have been great and the (foldable) touchscreen is easy to use.

One downside: you can focus on the touchscreen and make photos that way. On multiple occasions this leads to accidental photos when touching the screen. Apart from that it is truly easy to use and a great buy!
