Camera for HD video D3200, D5100, T3i, A57

Troy-Tully | Asked  10 months ago | Last response was 8 months ago

I'm looking to film skiing primarily and already have a couple Nikon lenses.  Im really happy with the

Nikon ED AF-S VR-NIKKOR 70-200mm 1:2.8G

Nikon ED AF NIKKOR 80-200mm 1:2.8 D

I plan on using prime lenses as I love the cinematic look they give.

Of course, everything online is telling me that Canon's do better with video, although im skeptical because of the similar technology.  Although I'm pretty set on getting 60fps on hd. (everything but the 5100) I do however like the image quality of the Nikon's for whatever reason.

Im able to move around in the price ranges although getting a nikon will be cheaper because of the lenses.  I'm really trying to get my sport further (i ski moguls) and would greatly appreciate any extra help and opinions.

    A-57 vs Nikon D5100

    The A-57 has:

    • Mirrorless Technology • Upto 16000 ISO (25600 with ISO Boost) • In-Built Image Stabilization • 12 FPS Burst Mode • More cross-type focus points • More focus points • Built in focus motor • Faster video autofocus • Larger Viewfinder

There is no question of going for the D5100.

    A-57 vs Canon 600D

    The A-57 has:

    • Mirrorless Technology • A larger sensor • Upto 16000 ISO (25600 with ISO Boost) • In-Built Image Stabilization • 12 FPS Burst Mode • More cross-type focus points • More focus points • Better color depth • More dynamic range • Video autofocus • Larger Viewfinder

This takes the T3I out of my list too.

    A-57 vs Nikon D3200

    The A-57 has:
    • Mirrorless Technology • A larger sensor • Upto 16000 ISO (25600 with ISO Boost) • In-Built Image Stabilization • More focus points • Built in focus motor • Flip Out Screen • Faster video autofocus • Larger Viewfinder

The only drawback I see with the A-57 is the EVF but only in extremely low light conditions. I have been using this camera for the past 2 weeks and its fantastic. It beats the D90 (which is approx 20% more expensive) hands down and rivals/beats the D7000 in all the important areas.

Another point one needs to rememer is that Canon & Nikon make pathetic entry-level DSLR's. Though their Pro SLR's are market leaders.

There is now reason on earth to choose canon or nikon (except pro ones). All the cameras, even 7D or D7000 are worst than a65/a77, so definitely go with the Sony one.

If you hadn't already invested in Nikon lenses, the choice would have been much easier. The A57 seven is by far the fastest shooter and produces better video. The Nikons are better in low light by half an f stop but the Sony's focusing is unmatched. If you shoot a lot of video: the AVCHD (Sony) requires more computer power to edit.

I'd say look at the K-30 from Pentax...  There is no Mic. input, but its fully weather-sealed, which is a must if you'll be around in the snow all day. If you want an external mic. input, then the K-5 would be more for you ($80 more, but lacks the 720p @ 60fps mode).

NOTE: There is a hack one can do to all Pentax DSLRs. This allows 1080p videos to be shot at about 75fps, with 720p pushing 100fps.

5100 anytime mate... anytime and if you have no money constraints go for D7000.. its weatherproof as well..
