I have the d3100 with 18-55 lens can't afford 18-300 should I get p510

beginner   take lots of pictures

save up for the better lens? or have the p510 as a second camera?

    it is better to have 2 cameras. buy the p510. it has a 1000mm zoom equivalent.

    and then you save for a better lens for your d3100.

    it is easier to borrow a lens than to borrow a p510.

    18-55 is fine for most of the shots -

    consider the 55-300 dx lens if it is 300 mm is the farthest point  u want

    or consider getting a 70-300mm fx lens which would be 105-450 mm on ur d3100
