Does the large sensor on the Sony benefit the camera?

Pari-Kankaria | Asked  10 months ago | Last response was 7 months ago

I understand that Sony has a larger sensor then other comparable compact cameras, how does this effect picture quality?  The supporting lens are quite big, making the tunnel longer hence reducing the amount of light coming in, hence picture in general is a bit darker compared to the its competitors. Reviews also suggest that Sony is quite lagging with low light images when compared to its competitors. Can anyone give me a first hand experience with a mirrorless Sony camera?

I own it, it's awesome.  Incredible low light performance and lots of neat sony features jammed in like hand held night shot, panoramic, HDR.  You can add an external mike and a pancake lens and do some great video shooting.  Super small, super portable. Decent lens selection.

GX1 wins out to me, big size advantage, similar image quality, including low light when you use fast lenses on both cameras.  Much bigger lens selection for the GX1 as well.

I would suggest that you search one of those image sharing websites like flickr.  I've done a lot of searching of GX1, GF5 vs NEX-5N images.  There is a decent amount of night pics out there for comparision.  To be honest I prefer the low light performance of the 5N over the GX1.

However I picked the GX1 over the NEX specifically for the selection of lenses.  The 25mm Summilux kills the 16mm in Bokeh, and crispness of the images.  In my case I use the GX1 as a travel camera to go places where my D7000 cannot or will not go.

Hands down, the Sony NEX-5 has better image quality (less noise, larger dynamic range and more colors).  But the Panasonic has a built-in flash whereas the Sony comes with a detachable flash.  It might be easier to have the built-in flash especially if you're moving the camera in and out of your pocket/purse/whatever a lot, but I think the image quality of the NEX-5 is much better.

At this time Sony produce the best sensors on the market, nearly every good 16MP sensor from Nikon comes from Sony. So the sensors on the Sony cameras are totally worth it.
