If you have full frame lenses, then the D700 would be the way I would go, otherwise if you don't, and if selling those DX lenses will hurt your pocket (a DX lens on a 12MP D700 is silly), the D7000 is a great camera, a step down from the D300 in some ways, step up in many ways, but you know that.

Photokina is happening in a month, fairly strong rumours about of a D300s replacement are were flying around a few months back, may be ideal for you - high end DX body. If you can wait to chance it, it might be something that would interest you, though as always it might take a while to hit the shelves if it is actually released. Prob cost near enough what a D700 is getting.

The Nikon D700 hands down. The D300 is a high end crop sensor camera, although the D7000 is a great camera, it is still a bit of a step down from the D300. The D700 is a full frame camera, and all your lenses will work with it, although they will automatically crop the full frame sensor.

D300s is better only in terms of built quality, otherwise D7000 is better - Better low light performance (for me most important), better AF, better video! I have D700 and d7000, and D700 is the best! know i am waiting for D600

Well, friend of mine have D800e, no issues for his d800e with focus. I think there are some bad series produced. Can't believe, actually I refuse to believe that 100% of all D800 have issues with focus systems. You need to think more optimistic! :D There is HUGE difference between dx and fx photos, FX is so much lighter, full of life and details, worth any dollar, penny, euro etc. My opinion based on my experience is get an FX, than lenses. :)

How about 9-shot bracketing, 6-8FPS, more manual controls? And how's the D7000 AF better?! The D300 AF system is way ahead of the D7000's. Both are great cameras but each has it's merits so please be objective :)
