Compact camera for when a dSLR isn't required

I would call myself a hobbyist who is trying to improve.  I have a Canon 60D which I use the majority of the time.  Sometimes a dSLR just isn't required though and something more subtle would be more suitable.  For example, when taking photos during school sports days, kids swimming lessons, playdates, etc.  I don't need the quality that a dSLR would produce, but I want at least a decent snapshot with the ability to manually adjust some of the controls to maximise the output.

Would you recommend either of these or something different altogether?

Which camera do you recommend for gemstarpics?

Canon S100 - $325
12 MP|5x f/2.0|1/1.8" CMOS|3" LCD
Canon G12 - $509
10 MP|5x f/2.8|1/1.7" CCD|2.8" LCD
