There doesn't seem to be enough reason to go to the D4. I shoot a D3s for theatre, concert and events. It does a great job. I will generally shoot with my 70-200 f2.8 vrii, but sometimes I can actually get away with the 28-300. Because stage lights are generally pretty bright, I don't often shoot even at 6400 and I'll generally shoot full manual. Depends on the show, but f/4 and 1/250-1/300 seems pretty common.
The biggest issue I have is dynamic range, between the hot stage lights and shadows. Sometimes there will still be noise after kicking the shadows up since I've compromised between the two. The D800 might help with that (more than 2 stops greater dynamic range). I'm tempted to test one out.I use a D700 now for theatre photography. I upgraded to prime lenses f.1.4. Great!
But sometimes I have to shoot in iso 6400 and then there is to much noise.
I know the D3s is great. But still
reasonable priced as occasion (± € 3000,-)How is the D800 performing in theatres etc.?
Or should I spend even more on a D4?
