Who wins the shutter lag battle?

Jon-Adams | Asked  8 months ago | Last response was 7 months ago

As a retired professional, I am looking to carry an everyday camera that does not look like a pro camera, is not a heavy DSLR but has the features which pros want and shutter lag is the 800 lb gorilla in the point 'n' shoot venue. There are many great features to be had in most cameras of every price category but it seems in order to get a small camera with no shutter lag, you have to go Leica rangefinder at $7K or go to the mirrorless category of cameras with slow aperture lenses (common zoom lens as an example: 14-42mm F3.5-5.6). So fast lens and optical viewfinder would be a plus. Of the non mirrorless point 'n' shoot digital cameras, which has the shortest shutter lag and does it come close to the mirrorless cameras?

Which camera do you recommend for Jon-Adams?

Fujifilm X10 - $504
12 MP|4x f/2.0|2/3" CMOS|2.8" LCD
Leica 5 - $907
10 MP|3.8x f/2.0|1/1.6" CCD|3" LCD

The x10 has a useful viewfinder, which distinguishes itself from all other cheap compact cameras, turning off the screen and shooting with manual focus is possible although a bit tricky, easiest to use ae/af lock and then enter manual

Zooming is fantastic compared to all other compacts, though one misses more length, its exposure compensation wheel is stiff and clicks notably, yet will be sure to stay in place, that is the only physical setting, all other settings are in the confusing and limited menu, with the update partly via the q-menu

The leica 5 is the same as panasonic lx5, without the grip! It has a very useful aspect switch and focus switch, and great 24mm wideangle, plus is possible to put in a pocket, especially with a jjc autolenscap

I had both, and they photos are practically the same quality, though it is easier to pull the lx5 from a pocket and turn on with one hand, thus you can get more fast shots, plus video with a dedicated button is way easier and longer

On x10 there is a video length cap of 29 minutes for hd, and 115 minutes for vga, so if you record a typical lecture you need to use vga and a 4gb sd card

If a viewfinder and manual zoom is critical then it is x10, for singlehand shooting and wideangle and more menu options get the lx5 or the new lx7 (Leica D-Lux 6)

Looked at both X10 & D-lux7 (aka Lumix DNC version too). For a geezer like me who prefers an optical viewfinder, the X10 wins on that alone. The D-lux offers an EVF as an option. It just doesn't seem the same. If image quality is the same between the 2 cameras, then shutterlag is the decision maker here. Thank you for your input!

You could put voigtlander viewfinders on top of the d-lux, they are far superior than the x10 viewfinder, it would still give you a more pocketable camera, and lx7 trumps the x10 with its 1.7-2.5 lens, plus the panasonic/leica raw files are useful (where x10 raw give almost no benefit). The aspect switch and aperture switch are even tempting me to change x10 to a lx7, still i will see how it fares in winter! Viewfinders here: voigtacc.htm at www.cameraquest.com

Have never used the Leica 5, but I am happy with the Fujifilm X10 and it has no shutter lag at all.

I have shot skateboarding and other high speed action with it. If You "prefocus" You will be fine.
