I am mostly a beginner in photography, I just want an affordable camera (less than/around $400) I narrowed it down to these two cameras but am still open to other suggestions: Nikon coolpix L120 and Nikon Coolpix L810.  I want my camera to take really good video, not just really good pictures. I also want a camera i can just plug into the wall to charge, I dont want to have to change batteries constantly. If i can have help with finding a suitable camera, that would be awesome. I've been looking around for a few weeks.

Which camera do you recommend for Jamie-Lewallen?

Nikon L120 - $180
14 MP|21x f/3.1|1/2.5" CCD|3" LCD
Nikon L810 - $195
15.9 MP|25.4x f/3.1|1/2.5" CCD|3" LCD

a year ago as a beginner i use Nikon P500, consider the zoom and full HD Movie. For you i suggest a cheaper one cause there's no significant differences. But maybe you'll dissapointed that the Autofocus slow, fast run out battery, and you can hear the motor when you use zoom in video result. But you can learn all the basic theory of photography from these coolpix, setting the aperture, iso, shutter speed, white balance, exposure, etc. Then you can step up to a DSLR and feel so happy that all the theory can applied so easily. Sorry my english not good...ihope can help

There aren't many cameras nowdays that you can plug into the wall to charge.

Most come with a removable Lithium-Ion battery and separate charger or use AA batteries (less and less do, usually lower end models).   Many find having to charge the battery in-camera less convenient as it can't be used while charging.  I suspect that mentality comes from cellphone users unfamiliar with digital cameras other than the one built into their phones.

As for Nikons, L series are "auto" everything with very little, if any manual settings.  Nikon S series offer more controls, while the P series give the shooter the most control over camera settings. However, all of them have "auto" setting for just point and shoot mode.

L810 is an update of L120 with more zoom and more mps (worthless increase IMHO) and the sensor is essentially the same. Most likely, L120 can be had for lower price than L810 unless Nikon is running some sort of special.

For same or little more money, I would consider getting P500 (just updated to P510); it may be had for lot less than original MSRP now that P510 is out. That way, if your interest in photography increases, you have manual settings to learn with on P500.
