Offering a 16 megapixel sensor, 5x zoom lens and a very attractive price tag of less than £120 / $120, the A1300 even features a proper optical viewfinder.

The saddest feature is a 16 mp sensor, which implies pretty good resolution, but since the lens is not very sharp that level of resolution is meaningless.
PowerShot A1300 by Howard-Greybeard (Aug, 2012)
All of the sample images in this review were taken using the 16 megapixel Fine JPEG setting, which gives an average image size of around 4Mb.

I decided on the A1300 since it has a view finder, uses AA batteries and is easy to drop into the pocket and the wide angle lense.

This is just what I was looking for...a wide angle lens.

The 5x zoom capability is nice, but it takes a couple of seconds after using the zoom dial before the camera actually adjusts the lens.

At full optical zoom at about 150 feet I can count the blades of grass in my neighbor's lawn with the camera set at 16mp.

It is very light weight, even with the case (purchased seperately) it fits nicely in my jacket pocket or purse.

A pleasant surprise is the long life of the pencell batteries, which, based upon previous camera experience, were expected to require frequent replacement.
PowerShot A1300 by J.-Hannan--Just-a-dream (Aug, 2012)
The battery life is good, but the camera body looks like a plastic toy camera.

Image quality starts off very well at low ISO with sharp, smooth edges and no visible signs of colour invasion in dark areas - the place they normally formulate first.

It handles the light whether I am shooting into the sun or with the sun at my back.

The color brightness and focus are good and the photo details are great.

I was especially pleased with the macro setting... pictures of flowers are quite stunning.

Lens

I've even gotten some excellent bird and wildlife pictures made clear & sharp by the stabilized zoom!

This is at the wide-angle setting and the lens does see a lot of barrel distortion then.
Canon PowerShot A1300 | Rated 70% by by Photography Blog (Dec, 2012)
The camera is very simple to operate, and is a 16 mp, so the outdoor scenes as well as closeups and indoor shots are amazingly clear!

I have tried it with standard batteries, alkaline batteries, photo batteries, and Li-Ion rechargable batteries.

Use of AA batteries is important to me when traveling because, in most countries, AA batteries are readily available.

Viewfinder

I have been looking for a compact point and shot with a view finder for a good long time.
Canon PowerShot A1300 | Rated 100% by by Shirl (Sep, 2012)
In fact, add the optical viewfinder and it would be easy to believe that this is a camera designed for the older generation.
Canon PowerShot A1300 | Rated 70% by by Photography Blog (Dec, 2012)
The alternative is to hold your (non-viewfinder) camera out at arm's length.

It has good recording sound, and takes good quality photos.
Canon PowerShot A1300 | Rated 80% by by a.c. (Aug, 2012)
I didn't expect this thing to stand toe-to-toe with a D7000 but I at least hoped it would best an HTC Incredible 2 cellphone for image quality.

Screen

It's a real plus to have an optical viewfinder as well as the LCD monitor, especially useful in bright sunlight.
Canon PowerShot A1300 | Rated 80% by by Walt-Z. (Aug, 2012)
I find the camera very well built, easy to use, the LCD screen is easy to see, the view finder is spot on.
