Nikon's 12.2 megapixel CMOS is back-illuminated, and while their bare specifications are similar, we do not believe that this technology is used in the G15's 12.1 megapixel sensor.
PowerShot G15 by DPReview (May, 2013)
All of the sample images in this review were taken using the 12 megapixel Superfine JPEG setting, which gives an average image size of around 4Mb.

The line took a hiatus for a couple of years between 2004-6 when affordable APS-C SLRs started to appear, before being reinvented with the smaller, slimmer G7 - redesigned as a compact camera for SLR-owning enthusiasts.

In good light, the PowerShot G15 took around 0.3 seconds to focus at wide-angle, and just under a second at its telephoto end.
PowerShot G15 by DPReview (May, 2013)
The G15 is quick to power up in a second or so, the rear LCD blinking into life with PowerShot visual and audio 'sting' and the 5x optical zoom lens simultaneously extending from storage within the body to maximum wide-angle setting.

The G15's fast lens also means you can keep the ISO sensitivity lower than on cameras with smaller maximum apertures, which means better image quality, or alternatively use faster shutter speeds - great news if you're shooting moving subjects.
PowerShot G15 by DPReview (Nov, 2012)
Both scales are logarithmic, so that a one-stop change of aperture brightness is a consistent height and that a doubling of focal length is always represented by the same width along the bottom on the graph.

The G15 also finally gains a dedicated movie record button, for the first time on a small-sensor G, and the lens can zoom and focus during recording.

Hopefully, you can immediately see what separates these two cameras: the G15 offers the faster lens and optical viewfinder, but has less zoom power and a fixed LCD.

Naturally, we here at DPReview love a good debate, so we've decided to put the two flagship compact cameras from Canon and Nikon against one another in a head-to-head battle.
PowerShot G15 by DPReview (May, 2013)
We would've expected better from Nikon's flagship compact camera.

Battery life among enthusiast compacts is also fairly sad, but the G15 at least sits at the top end of the range.
PowerShot G15 by c|net (Nov, 2012)
The two cameras are fairly close in terms of battery life, with the PowerShot G15 able to take 350 shots per charge, compared to 330 on the Coolpix P7700 (using the CIPA standard).
PowerShot G15 by DPReview (May, 2013)

max continuous shooting

Both cameras have a variety of continuous shooting modes, though the fastest modes (10 fps on the G15, 4 and 8.5 fps on the P7700) black out the LCD, which makes following a moving subject difficult (though the optical viewfinder on the G15 helps, in an approximate way).
PowerShot G15 by DPReview (May, 2013)
Based on the shot-to-shot speeds above, you can probably assume that the results will be similar when shooting bursts of images.
PowerShot G15 by DPReview (May, 2013)

DxOMark low light performance

Canon PowerShot G15
Nikon D3100
Samsung NX1000
What this means in the real world is that you'll need to use higher sensitivities on the P7700 than you would on the G15, especially in low light situations.
PowerShot G15 by DPReview (May, 2013)
In low light situations, the G15 focuses roughly twice as fast as the P7700, with numbers of roughly one and two seconds at wide-angle, respectively, and the P7700 taking seconds at telephoto.

The G15 has the advantage of that faster F2.8 lens, and has been able to select a correspondingly higher shutter speed of 1/20sec - still not high, but high enough that camera shake has been successfully minimized thanks to the camera's optical image stabilization system.

Building on the success of previous G-series models, for 2012 the G15 principally adds a 12 megapixel CMOS sensor, faster 5x zoom lens, bigger and higher-resolution LCD screen, 10fps burst shooting and full 1080p HD video.

While there's no hidden depth to raws, with some tweaking you can produce shots as high as ISO 1600 by processing them to better handle the trade-offs of noise and sharpness.

Lens

Photographers tend to be interested in how well a lens can blur backgrounds when shooting portraits at full telephoto, and in this respect the G15 should do pretty well for a compact, due its combination of relatively fast aperture and long-ish lens.
Canon PowerShot G15 | Rated 76% by by DPReview (Nov, 2012)
The Canon G15 has a 12.1 megapixel 1/1.7-type CMOS sensor, DIGIC 5 image processor, 3-inch 922,000-dot LCD screen, 5x 28-140mm equivalent zoom lens with fast maximum apertures of f/1.8 - f/2.8, RAW image capture, optical viewfinder, 10fps burst mode, flash hotshoe, 1cm macro mode, ISO 80-12800 and full range of manual shooting modes.
Canon PowerShot G15 | Rated 90% by by Photography Blog (Nov, 2012)
Along with the familiar 35mm-equivalent focal length, we've also included a 35mm-equivalent aperture range, which gives some idea of the relative control over depth of field offered by the two cameras' lenses.

Sensor

While some folks will appreciate the wireless flash control, Raw processing, and additional white balance options found on the Coolpix P7700, others will be swayed by the PowerShot G15's faster (albeit shorter) lens and superior electronic level.
Canon PowerShot G15 | Rated 76% by by DPReview (May, 2013)
That said, the G15's faster lens means that you can select a lower ISO setting to achieve a certain shutter speed in a given light situation, reducing this particular advantage of the G1 X's larger sensor.
Canon PowerShot G15 | Rated 76% by by DPReview (Nov, 2012)
For JPEGs, images look good up through ISO 200, then artifacts begin to become quite apparent.

Image quality

There you can adjust contrast, sharpness, saturation, RGB, and skin tones.
Canon PowerShot G15 | Rated 76% by by DPReview (May, 2013)
The image quality at these very ISO settings is surprisingly good with well-controlled chroma-noise.
Canon PowerShot G15 | Rated 76% by by DPReview (Nov, 2012)
As we mentioned in the introduction to this review, this should give the G15 a distinct advantage over its predecessor in poor light since the G15's faster lens means that at any given light level you can keep the ISO at a lower setting, capturing better image quality with more detail.
Canon PowerShot G15 | Rated 76% by by DPReview (Nov, 2012)

Screen

Press this when in program or any of the other creative modes and sliding scale of apertures and corresponding shutter speeds appears along the bottom of the screen, scrolled through with the aid of - aptly enough - the scroll wheel surrounding the familiar four-way control pad to the right of the G15's screen.
Canon PowerShot G15 | Rated 90% by by Photography Blog (Nov, 2012)
The biggest change is the omission of a tilting LCD screen, replaced instead by a higher-resolution but crucially fixed 3 inch screen.
Canon PowerShot G15 | Rated 90% by by Photography Blog (Nov, 2012)
The screen itself is a large, high-resolution 3" 920k dot unit with a tempered glass cover and wide viewing angles.
Canon PowerShot G15 | Rated 76% by by DPReview (Nov, 2012)

Video

The PowerShot G15 records 1080/24p video, while the Coolpix P7700's video is smoother, thanks to its 30 fps frame rate.
Canon PowerShot G15 | Rated 76% by by DPReview (May, 2013)
On the plus side, unlike its predecessor the G15 can focus and zoom during movie shooting and finally comes with a dedicated movie button.
Canon PowerShot G15 | Rated 76% by by DPReview (Nov, 2012)
You can choose from bit rates of 18.8 or 12.6 Mbps - which affects video quality - using the same H.264/AVC codec as the G15.
