This close up macro shot with the camera at maximum wideangle setting has captured plenty of detail and some pleasingly realistic colours too, with little if any adjustment needed straight out of the camera.

I've printed some pretty nice 11x14 posters (and the printing sites say I could take it up to 12x18 without adverse effects), so the 12 megapixels is working out pretty well.
PowerShot SX130 IS by Jessica-Jones (Feb, 2011)
The most obvious differences I see are that the SX130 is slightly larger/heavier, has more megapixels per photo, a larger optical zoom (12X vs. 4X), but lacks a viewfinder and an auto flash.

One thing the manual shooters might not like is that there is no middle ISO setting between ISO800 and ISO1600.
PowerShot SX130 IS by S.-Vogt (Dec, 2010)
I was able to get decent shots out of this camera up to and including ISO800... not so much at ISO1600 but I can't really be upset that a point and shoot at this price can't take decent pics at that high ISO (that's where the DSLR comes in).

At the low end of the zoom, there is a bit of the wide-angle effect...but I really appreciate how wide this camera is able to go.

I ordered a panasonic lumix (24 mm wide angle) after that and compared the two.

Just make sure to get comfortable with the manual settings (P mode, I believe) because while the pre-sets are nice on the fly, the potential of this camera really came out when I played with aperture, etc..

The aperture range is decent, but not amazing.

The Canon PowerShot SX130 IS is a travel-zoom camera on a budget, offering enough features, performance and image quality to appeal to both beginners and serious photographers alike.

Portability: While larger than the little rectangle pocket cameras, the size of the 130S is still a nice small portable size-much easier to tote around than the larger SX20/30IS..
PowerShot SX130 IS by Tishavens (Apr, 2011)
It was heavier than I've been used to, but is a good feel and size for holding while setting up a good shot, the weight translates to a quality feel.

max continuous shooting

If you want to shoot a lot of sports, or need to take rapid fire sequences, this probably is not the one for you.

The batteries that came in the box lasted a total of about a half hour total of non-continuous shooting and I didn't even try taking any video.

Unlike some of its competitors, such as the 10x zoom Casio EX-H20G, the full extent of the lens reach can happily be utilised when recording video, to take in both wide angle and close up framing.

Just like its predecessor, the SX130 IS is an evolutionary upgrade, falling into the same incremental yearly cycle that a lot of modern compact cameras seem to follow, with a wider-angle lens and HD movies with stereo sound and use of the optical zoom being the new standout highlights.

Canon keeps the barrel distortion in check with this wide-angle lens; there is some, but it's a livable amount.

And it's nice that it takes regular AA batteries, because if you are planning on going out or on a trip it's easy to bring extra batteries.

It is very bright and clear.

The colors are washed out, the contrast is very sharp, the colors are nonexistent.

Battery

The camera is fantastic for point and shoot people but the fact that the batteries die so fast takes the spotlight.

Rechargeable batteries are a must, but it is handy to be able to use regular batteries in a pinch.

It uses only 2 AA batteries but what comes with it only lasted for 20 pics, so get good lithium or NMH batteries.

Lens

It's not exactly a sub-compact, but for a compact zoom, the size is perfect and exceeds my expectations.

Video

I saw this camera, saw it had a case, saw the pretty nifty price, the functions, and the HD Video and was sold at that point.

My Canon A720IS was still in it's best condition & used to take stunning pictures, but I wanted some more features specially more zoom.

Image quality

Image quality is excelent, and manual setups (if knowing how to use them) can enhance it notably.

I still prefer my old kodak z730 bought in 2005 as far as sharpness and the overall picture quality you can get without fiddling too much.
Canon PowerShot SX130 IS | Rated 60% by by Dantiri (Mar, 2011)
The shutter speed/time to take picture with flash still isn't awesome but it takes great pics in low light without the flash so it compensates that way.
