This fits my style perfectly for my daily use.Anti-shake works very well when hand-holding the camera in low-light conditions or when using the telephoto end of the zoom range.

Colors desaturate some at ISO 1600 and 3200, subjects look very soft, and detail is greatly diminished, but photos are still usable at small sizes for prints or on a computer screen.

High definition movie recording is well catered for with a choice of either 1920 x 1080 Full HD at 24fps or 1280 x 720 HD at 30fps.

The canon is superior in EVERY way!!We have kids in sports, and we go to concerts and travel to Lake Tahoe and do cruises and Disneyland every couple of years.

If you don't mind using two cameras, then get an Elph for family photos and the sx 40 for nature photography.
Rated 100% by by abra--a-devoted-reader (Jan, 2012)
This does everything I wanted in a reasonable price (I paid $189) and also has HD video, aperture, shutter, manual and auto settings, and certain presets such as "kids and pets" which will give you as large a depth of field as the light allows as you photograph rapidly moving subjects.

While Canon’s IXUS range has always been the more obvious choice for younger, more style-conscious photographers, the workhorse PowerShot range rarely fails to deliver in terms of useful shooting features and fantastic image quality.

Lots of blurry pictures...I bought the camera to photograph my 5 month old daughter and she is blurry in half of them :(Fortunately when the picture comes out clear, the pictures are great).

It would be nice to have the option to create the movie or just store the clips as well as have it create a movie with the photos you took inserted between the clips.

Photography

At its widest setting the aperature opens from F/3.1 and goes up to around F/8.0...It's a nice camera for photography, but photography IS hard.
