Being able to shoot 720p high-definition video complete with image stabilisation, stereo sound and the ability to make full use of that incredible 35x zoom is a real attraction and something that no other compact camera can currently match.

Unfortunately the longer lens and move to a 14 megapixel sensor doesn't do the SX30's image quality any favours, especially in low-light, and the official price increase puts it into direct competition with other premium super-zooms, entry-level DSLRs and compact system cameras.
PowerShot SX30 IS by Photography Blog (Oct, 2010)
In addition to this, the SX30 offers a 14 megapixel image sensor, 2.7 inch vari-angle LCD screen, electronic viewfinder, flash hotshoe, full manual controls and 720p HD movies.

The image quality will never be as good as a DSLR or a Micro Four Thirds camera such as the Panasonic DMC-GH1 and I would not recommend this camera for professional or fine arts photography, but it would be a convenient and versatile choice under daylight conditions when you want to carry a minimum amount of equipment.
PowerShot SX30 IS by David-Siegfried
The super zoom function works real well as does video,But taking still shots is a challenge with the SX30,Maybe I got a bad one I don't know,But they can only squeeze so many things into a camera with this size sensor and expect high quality pictures across the board.

That was an SD400 and it served really well even though it's optical zoom really didn't zoom much and video was mono but it was great at concerts because it was so small, no security guard ever found it in my purse!

I was pleasantly surprised by the clarity with the telephoto zoomed all the way out - made the purchase seem like a good buy.

The overall weight of 600g adds a definite feeling of solidity, while the matt black finish lends an overall air of sophistication.

Shutter lag is very high.
PowerShot SX30 IS by cosmicgene (Jul, 2011)
Positives: Excellent pictures, shortest shutter (non-existent) shutter lag, low light performance, burst speed that no point and shoot on earth will ever match.
PowerShot SX30 IS by cosmicgene (Jul, 2011)

max continuous shooting

Burst speed is very much non-existent.
PowerShot SX30 IS by cosmicgene (Jul, 2011)
Burst mode allows me to get the super shot I want b taking multiple pictures a second so that one of them is the one I want instead of guessing at the timing of when to hit the button.

The Canon PowerShot SX30 IS leaves other super-zooms trailing in its wake in terms of sheer focal length, with the 24mm wide-angle and 840mm telephoto settings providing more than enough versatility to meet most people's needs.

An equally big and obvious dedicated record button for shooting video sits top right of the LCD screen, which as well as being angle adjustable can be tilted screen inward to the body for added protection when the SX30 IS isn't in use.

I like the Electronic Viewfiner... comes in very handy in bright, sunny conditions when the LCD is not easily visible.

This camera may disappoint a pro enthusiast accustomed to DSLR photo quality but most amatuer or beginning photographers will like it a lot.

Sure, the product has an incredible zoom, but I feel like the image quality is much lower than I expected.

Lens

We're always sitting or standing far from the action on the field, but with this camera I can get amazing closeup shots.

But the fact this thing does both very well is a huge bonus, not to mention the zoom!!! I took pics of the moon and you can see all the creators, sooo cool.

For operation that is both smooth and silent the SX30 IS' lens has been equipped with a USM (Ultrasonic) motor, and here users can also take advantage of what Canon refers to as its Zoom Framing Assist function.

Zoom

What's awesome is its ability to take a clear shot at even the 140x zoom.
Canon PowerShot SX30 IS | Rated 80% by by Tom-Niemeier (Oct, 2010)
35x Optical Zoom with full manual controls, Aperture Priority and Shutter priority and what not... This camera can perform even better than many of the known DSLRs if a person knows proper photography... A really good investment...The VDO capabilities might not be that good... but the rest of the features and quality super-cedes that... A must buy for people looking to shoot professional photographs without investing in an SLR.
Canon PowerShot SX30 IS | Rated 100% by by Padmanabhan
The Canon SX30IS is a must buy if you want the best zoom, amazing photos, a lot of very useful features, such as, Automatically dating your pictures when you take the picture (which is the most important feature to me).

It is made in China and cannot come close to Japanese build cameras in terms of quality and durability.

I have never had a camera of this quality before!! I think this thing is awesome!!! I wish it had a better manual with it though.
