grey. Whilst this may seem like a frippery to some, the core headline features are a modest sounding 10.1 megapixels yet from a larger than average 11.3MP, 1/1.63-inch CCD, a wide-angle focal range the equivalent of 24-90mm in 35mm old money, or a 3.8x optical zoom - equally modest in these 'travel zoom' times but adequate - plus a 3-inch LCD bestowed with 460k dot resolution.

Granted my 5D is a bit dated now, but it's still pro quality full frame DSLR and better than 80% of all DSLR's out there.

Some of the best you will see without seeking gear that is designed for good bokeh and short DOF (I.e. full frame sensor camera, LEICA R glass, etc).

The wide angle lens is a stunner as well, especially in the video mode.

The wide angle format is a lot of fun, and I use the scene modes quite a bit more than I expected (love the FILM mode especially).

The little aperture/shutter speed adjust dial by your thumb is small, but works great considering it is almost invisible.

The fast lens and functional freedom for me has resulted in some amazing photos, and hopefully after I understand more about the camera things will continue to improve.

In the last trip I took I had many friends with huge Nikons and Canons, two were pros... and even though they had better zooms, at least in those particular travel pictures I can assure you - my Leica on A was just as good as their DSLRs most of the time.
D-LUX 5 by L.-Nery (Nov, 2011)
Auto focus is very fast, settings are easy, lens zoom/retract are smooth and silent.

I needed a compact camera for everyday use as my DSLR and the equipments are quite heavy to carry around, so I did some research and tested various compact cameras and 4/3 systems cameras, and decided to get this leica camera as it has the best combination of size, build quality, picture quality, and zoom range.

The Leica D-Lux 5 does an excellent job as a compact camera, and I would highly recommend this if you need a camera that you can easily carry around all the time, capture any great moments that come by in excellent picture quality, and quickly share it with your family and friends.

The picture quality in JPEG is excellent for a compact camera, especially with the exposure and white balance in indoor situations.

Lens

I am happy to accept this in return for the enhanced versatility afforded by the higher quality optics.

On another note, the major downside (in my personal opinion)is that Leica didn't release much gears and accessories for the product although its Panasonic sibling has (i.e. wide angle/macro lenses).

The very high quality of the lens- it is noticeable!

Sensor

Indeed we'd suggest that performance at ISO 1600 is the equivalent of ISO 800 on lesser compacts, including Panasonic's pretty good Lumix series.
