Photo and video quality are very good if you have a lot of light and you don't need large prints or mind doing a little sharpening after you shoot.

An asking price of £329.99 / $379.95 is a lot to ask for a 16 megapixel camera, but it is comparable with the AW100's main action rivals, so as ever with such a specialized camera, you really need to decide exactly how much mileage you'll get out of the extra weather-proof and GPS features.
Coolpix AW100 by Photography Blog (Nov, 2011)
All of the sample images in this Review were taken using the 16 megapixel High JPEG setting, which gives an average image size of around 6.5Mb.

In favor of the Lumix, I liked the durable feel and overall fit and finish, the wide angle lens and I think people willing to play around with settings will have nice options.

When shooting in good lighting conditions, it'll automatically set shutter speed so fast, that picture will be shot really sharp, and you'll start comparing it with a DSLR.

The inclusion of a suite of sophisticated GPS features, which doesn't affect battery-life too adversely, and the innovative Action Control feature makes the AW100 a great travel companion.
Coolpix AW100 by Photography Blog (Nov, 2011)
The battery life depends on usage, i found that with the GPS function as well as movie mode drained the battery quicker than without those functions being used, but i still was able to get one days worth of vacation shooting on a 4 gb card.

The camera's full-resolution continuous burst is capable of 7.1 frames per second, though it can only do it for three shots and takes several seconds before it's ready to shoot again.

The LCD also features Nikon’s Clear Color Display technology which helps to minimize reflections in bright sunlight and underwater, and in practice this did make the screen easier to see than the majority of compacts that we test.

The dark lens and average low-light photo quality are a better match for hiking or snow sports or shooting in shallow waters in full sun, but not diving, regardless of its waterproof rating.

Used in either Easy or standard Automatic mode the AW100 consistently delivers strong, punchy images with vibrant colour and good levels of contrast.

GPS and built in compass are very nice features, so that you can geotag your outdoor images.

This camera looks to be a good fit for that, and the D80 with the big lens is going to get less use.

Durability

Drop Shock-Proof feature...lol...As much as I love the word Shock-Proof (SHOCKPROOF(tm) my Company Name) I will avoid testing that feature.

Underwater feature works great, but quality of the photos is average.

That said, if you're more of a snorkeler or pool denizen, or want a rugged camera for snow or offroad sports, it can take some very good photos.

Video

Coming to the video, it can also shoot 1080p videos, which is a great plus point.
Nikon Coolpix AW100 | Rated 100% by by Syed-Taha-Ghayas--Syed-Taha-Ghayas (Mar, 2012)
Video performance is much better thanks to the full HD 1080p mode with stereo sound, slow- and fast-motion options, the ability to use the optical zoom during recording and the economical MOV format, although the video features on offer are still somewhat basic.
Nikon Coolpix AW100 | Rated 80% by by Photography Blog (Nov, 2011)
The top Full HD movie recording setting of 1080/30p is supported by a 720/30p HD option, with the easy-to-edit iFrame (960 X 540 pixels) format also offered.

The reason for my rating, is not the quality it's the zoom (please refer to Oz zy's review).

Waterproof

I would highly recommend this camera to anyone who is looking for an outdoor/waterproof camera, or someone who needs a slightly more durable camera due to butterfingers.

Moving forward with the quality, I have read some reviews stating that low light conditions really aren't that great.

It takes good low light photos, with acceptable grain.
