The Nikon Coolpix L22 is an easily pocketable digital compact camera that nonetheless feels substantial owing to the extra weight of the two AA batteries it uses.

The camera takes nice pictures and is a very good price for a 12 megapixel camera.

I'd be interested to see if the 8 megapixel L21 fares any better.

At 400 ISO there is some sign of image noise, but overall quality is still fairly good.

At 80 ISO the image quality is quite good, although it's still over-sharpened.

The lens has fairly good overall sharpness, but it does suffer from significant wide angle distortion which is corrected electronically.

The maximum aperture is f/3.1 at the wide end and a rather slow f/6.7 at full telephoto.

The only time it really struggles in in low light at longer zoom ranges, when the slow f/6.7 maximum aperture means that it doesn't have enough light to focus reliably.

shutter lag

Nikon Coolpix L22
The camera also struggles with focusing in dim lighting, doing a lot of hunting, and there's a noticeable shutter lag.
Coolpix L22 by c|net (Feb, 2011)
After hitting the shutter button, it takes a LONG time for the camera to actually take the picture.

The screen is larger than usual for an entry-level camera and gets reasonably bright; I still had trouble using it in bright sun, but that can be said about a lot of LCDs.

One of Nikon's new launches for Spring 2010, the L22 is a 12-megapixel budget compact featuring a 3.6x zoom lens and a sharp 230k 3-inch LCD monitor.
Rated 90% by 24 users at amazon.com
The large screen makes reviewing photos easy, and deleting ones from the camera is simple with just a touch of a button plus an "are you sure?

The navigation between settings is pretty intuitive, and the instruction manual has lots more ideas too.

This is my first digital camera and I find it very easy to use and the pictures are great.

Lens

The Coolpix L22 has a 3.6x zoom lens that spans a 35mm equivalent focal range of approximately 37-134mm.

Upon start-up the lens extends in about a second, and the camera is ready to take pictures almost immediately after that - excellent performance at this price point.

The macro feature is the reason I got this camera and it's great for taking pictures of my aquarium.

Battery

The only one time we had to purchase new batteries was because we forgot to bring the other 2 batteries out and the ones in use ran out.
Nikon Coolpix L22 | Rated 80% by by Morris-Luk (Aug, 2010)
BTW, I had 4 rechargeable AA batteries and this camera took 2 at a time and so most of the time I did not run into the need to buy new battery.
Nikon Coolpix L22 | Rated 80% by by Morris-Luk (Aug, 2010)
It also makes the camera wider than battery-pack cameras since there has to be room for batteries.
Nikon Coolpix L22 | Rated 40% by by yankeefan81 (Aug, 2010)

Sensor

The over-sharpening and harsh compression have erased all of the detail-capturing advantage of the 12MP sensor.
Nikon Coolpix L22 | Rated 70% by by TrustedReviews (May, 2011)
The L22 has no manually adjustable ISO setting so it's difficult to accurately judge noise control at higher values, but by tricking into shooting at 800 ISO quite a bit of noise is visible.
Nikon Coolpix L22 | Rated 70% by by TrustedReviews (May, 2011)
While it lacks many useful features it performs and handles well, but is unfortunately let down by inferior image quality due to its overcrowded sensor and destructive image processing.
Nikon Coolpix L22 | Rated 70% by by TrustedReviews (May, 2011)

Zoom

It’s small yet reasonably sturdy, takes easy-to-obtain AA batteries, has a zoom lens that’s actually pretty sharp, and does a lot of things - like start-up, shut-down or zooming - surprisingly quickly, all at a price point well below £100.
Nikon Coolpix L22 | Rated 70% by by Photography Blog (Jul, 2010)
In the middle of the zoom range and at around the telephoto end the lens is really - even surprisingly - sharp from corner to corner.
Nikon Coolpix L22 | Rated 70% by by Photography Blog (Jul, 2010)
The 3.6x optical zoom is an improvement over the previous Nikon Coolpix we had, so this is now the favorite camera in my home!
Nikon Coolpix L22 | Rated 100% by by D.-Beckett (Jul, 2010)

Image quality

Colour rendition in standard mode looks a little pale and undersaturated, and dynamic range is also pretty poor.
Nikon Coolpix L22 | Rated 70% by by TrustedReviews (May, 2011)
Image quality isn't bad for an £80 camera, but it's far from perfect.
