And the D800 delivers equally good or better photos at low ISO sensitivities and better video quality for a lot less money, even when equipped with a battery grip, though the D4 remains seriously faster.

The Nikon D4 is a new professional-grade digital SLR camera with a sixteen-megapixel FX sensor, EXPEED 3 processing engine, upgraded Multi-CAM 3500FX auto-focus module, a brand new 91,000-pixel RGB metering sensor and a weather-sealed magnesium alloy body.
Nikon D4 by Photography Blog (May, 2012)
We're told that Nikon plumped for a 16MP sensor because this strikes a good balance between a high pixel count, for greater cropping or shooting in DX format, and good high sensitivity performance.

Detail from the new sensor is excellent, especially at the lower ISOs, while tonal gradation, colour accuracy when shooting Raw, white balance accuracy and ISO performance are all highly impressive too.
Nikon D4 by TrustedReviews (Oct, 2012)
What we have found is that the higher pixel density of the new sensor hasn't really impacted negatively on the image quality, which is still very high, and comes with the added benefit of a somewhat higher resolution.

Another noticeable change from the D3s is that the Nikon D4's metering switch on the pentaprism has gone and there's now a button on the top plate, alongside the bracketing and flash buttons in the place previously taken up by the aperture/shutter speed lock button.

As to other aspects of image quality, they are also top notch: colours are pleasing, tonality is superb, and dynamic range is wide.

While the Nikon D4 can certainly cope with low light, it isn't perfect and can struggle a little in atmospheric restaurant-type lighting.
Nikon D4 by TechRadar (Mar, 2012)
It makes shooting in the dark much easier, and given the low-light credentials of the Nikon D4, it seems likely that it will be a popular feature.

The Nikon D4 lets you dial in shutter speeds of up to 30 seconds and has a Bulb mode as well for exposure times of practically any length, which is very good news if you are seriously interested in night photography.
Nikon D4 by Photography Blog (May, 2012)
Its unique Live View Silent mode bursts 12fps or 24fps for 5 seconds at a low-resolution 1,920x1,080 with what I'm presuming is electronic rather than mechanical shutter, since it really is silent - although I could hear what I think was the aperture clicking.

continuous shooting

We clocked continuous shooting at 9.8 frames per second for JPEGs, but in practice that held as well for long bursts of raw+JPEG, too.
Nikon D4 by c|net (Jul, 2012)
And just as the 1D X offers an extended 14fps ‘High Speed’ (JPEG only) burst mode so the D4 also offers an enhanced 11fps option – although in order to gain the extra frame the camera does have to lock focus on the first frame in the sequence.

If you're a perpetual telephoto-lens schlepper, that probably won't matter to you - most of the big glass weighs even more than the body - but other folks should keep in mind that single-height pro bodies are pretty fast, and are lighter even equipped with an optional vertical grip, which can usually hold an extra battery as well.

Joining the information-packed status LCD, power switch/shutter, and exposure compensation and mode buttons on the top right shoulder is a tiny but physically differentiable record button.

We found that the screen provides a clear view in most shooting conditions, and reflections aren't a major issue even in bright sunlight.

Sensor

Its JPEGs look clean as high as ISO 1600, and are decent at ISO 3200 - there you start to see some detail degradation - and usable at ISO 6400, depending upon content.

I like the control design, but find it too far down and toward the middle of the back of the camera: it's underneath the LCD, next to the second status LCD (dedicated to ISO sensitivity, image quality, and white balance).

colour. When shooting Raw colour reproduction remains pleasingly neutral, allowing plenty of scope to boost or mute vibrancy and saturation levels in post-production as you see fit.

Photography

The enhanced sensitivity range was backed-up by a professional-grade build quality and flawless performance so it was hardly surprising that it soon became the go-to camera for many professional sports and news shooters.
