That said, there's no denying that the FZ100 is a more fully-featured, easier to use and faster camera than its predecessor, and with full HD movie recording on-board, it could replace your video camcorder.

It may not be able to match the 30x zoom or DSLR-like manual zoom and focus ring controls of its main rival, the Fujifilm HS10, but importantly it's much faster to use when shooting RAW files, something that drove us mad when reviewing the HS10.

From shot to shot without the flash you're waiting only 0.9 second; adding the flash drags that time to 4 seconds and is really the only slowdown you'll find.

Lens

The Panasonic Lumix DMC-FZ100 is dominated by the non-interchangeable 24x zoom lens that provides an incredibly versatile focal range of 25-600mm.
Panasonic Lumix DMC-FZ100 | Rated 90% by by Photography Blog (Aug, 2010)
With Intelligent Resolution Technology the effective focal length can be increased to 700mm with little loss of image quality.
Panasonic Lumix DMC-FZ100 | Rated 80% by by TrustedReviews (May, 2011)
Though it is a digital zoom, the results are usable and really no worse than images I've seen from cameras with longer optical zooms.
Panasonic Lumix DMC-FZ100 | Rated 80% by by c|net (Dec, 2010)

Video

It can shoot in full HD 1920 x 1080 resolution at 50 interlaced frames per second (50i, or 60i for the NTSC version), recording the results in the high-quality AVCHD format.

Many of them are available for both photos and movies.

Panasonic claims 410 shots on a single charge, but I found that the battery meter was down to two out of three bars after only a couple of days taking about 100 shots and a few short video clips, without using the monitor for playback very much.
Panasonic Lumix DMC-FZ100 | Rated 80% by by TrustedReviews (May, 2011)

Image quality

It is extremely fast and reliable, with very good low light performance, focusing just as quickly in twilight as in full daylight.
Panasonic Lumix DMC-FZ100 | Rated 80% by by TrustedReviews (May, 2011)
Dynamic range is pretty good for a 14MP small-sensor camera.
Panasonic Lumix DMC-FZ100 | Rated 80% by by TrustedReviews (May, 2011)
Fringing is under control for the most part, too, but I did see some in very high-contrast areas of photos when they're viewed at 100 percent.

Zoom

Menu options in this mode are very limited, and the is no manual control.
Panasonic Lumix DMC-FZ100 | Rated 80% by by TrustedReviews (May, 2011)
The super-zoom compact camera market is a hotly-contested one, with offerings from all the big manufacturers.
Panasonic Lumix DMC-FZ100 | Rated 90% by by Photography Blog (Aug, 2010)
That's great, but don't expect to hit that number if you're doing a lot of burst shooting, zooming, capturing movies, or a combination thereof.
Panasonic Lumix DMC-FZ100 | Rated 80% by by c|net (Dec, 2010)

Sensor

And again, shooting in raw or raw+JPEG had very little effect on performance.
Panasonic Lumix DMC-FZ100 | Rated 80% by by c|net (Dec, 2010)
Thankfully, the camera is fast enough that you don't pay a performance penalty for shooting in raw.
Panasonic Lumix DMC-FZ100 | Rated 80% by by c|net (Dec, 2010)
Color is very good from the FZ100 up to ISO 400.
