The move from a 10 to 12 megapixel sensor thankfully hasn't come at the expense of image quality, with ISO 800 on the DMC-FZ38 comparable to ISO 800 on the older FZ28, despite the increase in megapixels.

So if you're taking shots of a child indoors, the DMC-FZ38 automatically raises the ISO and in turn the shutter speed to avoid blurring the child's movement.

The camera feels solid and rugged in the palm, while at once portably lightweight – a slightly contradictory sounding summation that translates as build quality being 'as it should be.

It's always hard to judge the performance of IS systems accurately, but I was able to take shake-free shots at some very slow shutter speeds, as low as 1/25th of a second at the full extent of the zoom, which is nearly four stops of extra stability.

Other key improvements worthy of mention include the noticeably faster start-up and focus times thanks to the new Venus Engine HD5 processing engine, longer battery life, addition of Face Recognition to the Intelligent Auto shooting mode, and the new High Dynamic Range mode which is surprisingly effective.

At the base of the FZ38 we find a metal screw thread for a tripod, alongside which is a sliding compartment that houses both the chunky rechargeable battery – necessarily providing a good long life as there's no optical viewfinder to fall back on as a power saver – and a slot for an optional SD card (or the higher capacity SDHC format).

While burst shooting runs at about 2fps, faster than the rest, it's limited to three shots at full quality (five at most).

It's not quite the perfect hybrid of still and video camera, because there's no such animal, and it can't match the full HD 1920 x 1080 resolution of the Canon SX1 IS, but it certainly has the best video mode in its likely price range.

Front The FZ38 can record high-resolution HD 1280 x 720 movies at 30 frames in the AVCHD (MPEG-4/H.264) format.

In addition to the typical set of modes-PASM, preset scene program, and an intelligent auto-the FZ35 provides a very robust movie mode with manual controls and the ability to save three groups of custom settings.

Lens

To avoid flare, you also get a rather awkward detachable lens hood in the box, and clip-on lens cap that you can attach via a thread to one of the available catches for a shoulder strap.

However for anyone else looking for a new super-zoom camera they really don't come much better than this.
Panasonic Lumix DMC-FZ35 | Rated 100% by by TrustedReviews (May, 2011)
It may not offer the most megapixels, widest or longest zoom, or the biggest screen, but it does still offer a well-balanced and full-featured overall package that's still our pick of the super-zoom crowd.
Panasonic Lumix DMC-FZ35 | Rated 90% by by Photography Blog (Jul, 2009)

Video

Instead the FZ38 has a simple 3fps high-speed burst mode, which takes three, five or ten frames depending on the image size.
Panasonic Lumix DMC-FZ35 | Rated 100% by by TrustedReviews (May, 2011)
Hand-holding the FZ38 during movie recording inevitably leads to obvious shake, despite the optical image stabilizer, so for best results you'll need a dedicated video tripod.
Panasonic Lumix DMC-FZ35 | Rated 90% by by Photography Blog (Jul, 2009)
This is a lot more intuitive than having to select the movie mode then press the shutter button, as on most cameras.
Panasonic Lumix DMC-FZ35 | Rated 90% by by Photography Blog (Jul, 2009)

Zoom

Being able to use that huge zoom and both the Intelligent Auto options and new Creative Movie shooting mode makes for a very effective movie mode for both beginners and more experienced photographers alike, although the slow speed of the zooming mechanism does detract a little from the overall experience.
Panasonic Lumix DMC-FZ35 | Rated 90% by by Photography Blog (Jul, 2009)
As well as this the zoom lens can be used during video recording, with a dual-speed control for slow, smooth zooms.
Panasonic Lumix DMC-FZ35 | Rated 100% by by TrustedReviews (May, 2011)
The Optical Image Stabilizer helps prevent blurring from hand-shake when using the zoom lens.
Panasonic Lumix DMC-FZ35 | Rated 90% by by Photography Blog (Jul, 2009)

Image quality

The image quality is exceptionally good with no trace of image noise.
Panasonic Lumix DMC-FZ35 | Rated 100% by by TrustedReviews (May, 2011)
But while the camera does deliver better performance and photo quality than its predecessor, they're still not great-typical for these megazooms-and only a robust feature set makes it really stand out from the crowd.
Panasonic Lumix DMC-FZ35 | Rated 73% by by c|net (Oct, 2009)
Nonetheless the level of fine detail in the resulting images is outstanding, with colour depth and dynamic range to match.

Photography

Three options are available, Standard, Art, or B/W, each creating a different effect - you can see some examples on the Image Quality page.
Panasonic Lumix DMC-FZ35 | Rated 90% by by Photography Blog (Jul, 2009)
That's too bad, because the Power OIS image stabilizer works very well, producing solid images when I could visibly see in the viewfinder that my hands were shaking-it yielded at least a 3 2/3 stop gain in casual testing.
Panasonic Lumix DMC-FZ35 | Rated 73% by by c|net (Oct, 2009)
Ultimately, EVF and performance limitations render the FZ35 a poor choice for shooting kids, pets, and sports.
