Both use the same type of 17.3x13mm Four-Thirds Live MOS 12.1 megapixel sensor, both have (of course) the same lens mount, and both lack a built-in viewfinder, relying instead on a large three-inch monitor, although the GF1's screen has double the resolution.
Lumix DMC-GF1 by TrustedReviews (Dec, 2011)
12 Megapixel is easily enough for 16x20 prints, with the right choice of subject, and remember that it wasn't that long ago sports photographers were doing full page magazine illustrations with 1.3 Megapixel Nikon D1s!

Ultimate picture quality is probably not as good as a DSLR.Compared to a high-end point and shoot (S90, LX3, or G11) it is larger (especially with any zoom lens) but it auto-focuses faster and takes better pictures.Compared to other Micro Four Thirds cameras: Olympus EP Series has in body Image Stabilization but auto-focus is said to be slower.
Lumix DMC-GF1 by dodge
Shooting log-exposure shots in low light at high IS settings is usually a sure recipe for chronic image noise, and some previous 4/3 cameras have stumbled at this particular hurdle, but the GF1 performed much better than I expected, producing virtually noise-free images at 800 ISO, which is what I would expect from a good APS-C digital SLR.

Anyone who wants to have a small compact and lightweight camera with great image quality, are not concerned about focus speed/flash and want to use the in camera IS to stabilize non-IS lenses.
Lumix DMC-GF1 by B.-Fuller (Jan, 2010)
The size was great, easy to carry in hand, not too heavy on my neck when I had to use my hands for other things.

We've already looked at the feature and design differences between the GF1 and its only direct competitor, the Olympus E-P1, and it would seem to be fairly obvious that the Panasonic wins - by a narrow margin - on points, thanks to its better focusing, better screen and built-in flash.

Bottom line up front: The elusive compact camera with interchangeable lenses, DLSR Image Quality, DSLR Focusing speed and DSLR performance has finally been made.

I love the low light performance of the 20mm lens and the super fast focus of this GF1.
Lumix DMC-GF1 by D-Squared (Mar, 2010)
Furthermore my Canon S90IS beats the Panasonic in terms of image quality, is smaller to boot, and has IS built-in.

The Panasonic Lumix DMC-GF1 maximum shutter speed is 60 seconds and there's also a Bulb option for exposures up to 4 minutes long, which is excellent news if you're seriously interested in night photography.

Lumix DMC-GF1 by Brian-Bass (Nov, 2010)
Battery life is around 380 shots (CIPA standard) or 430 shots using the LVF, not bad at all for a camera without an optical viewfinder.

The E-P1 has undeniably cute retro styling, overall has the edge in JPEG image quality, offers in-body stabilization and can autofocus pretty much any Four Thirds lens (albeit very slowly).

The fantastically well-implemented Live View, lightning fast auto-focus, excellent image quality and added bonus of 720p video make the GF1 a great camera for beginners and more serious photographers alike.

The GF1 delivers photo quality on par or slightly better than the G1-it improves on the G1's exposure and color accuracy-and with entry-level dSLRs, and I'd rank them as two of Panasonic's best digital cameras to date in this respect.

No cameras is going to qualify as an SLR replacement unless it can produce SLR-like image quality, but the GF1 has a couple of advantages over previous pretenders to the throne, in that it has an SLR-sized sensor and Leica lens technology.

Even though it's small, it takes amazing pictures and video.

in short - you're better off getting a nikon D3100/D5000 or canon T1i/T2i kit and enjoying a much better combination of features, handling and image quality.

It's a great camera but my choice is GF1 (I am even ready to use "foot zoom" - this now looks like a small trade off compared to overall performance).

Lens

I find the Lumix 20mm f/1.7 to be very sharp wide open and produces nice creamy bokeh.
Panasonic Lumix DMC-GF1 | Rated 100% by by D.-Charles--charld (Aug, 2010)
It's beautiful, well-built, small, powerful and compatible with some great lenses if you don't mind shelling out the dough for them.
Panasonic Lumix DMC-GF1 | Rated 100% by by King (Jan, 2011)
I love the 20mm lens, though it's tough to remember to zoom with my feet.

Sensor

It's fast, fun, capable of stunning results in raw mode (and competitive results in JPEG mode), offers decent HD movie capture, and has enough features to satisfy even the most enthusiastic tweaker.

The most-used adjustments are readily accessible (ISO, autofocus selection and lock, exposure compensation, aperture, shutter speed, frame rate).

Image quality

The image quality is superb and details are very crisp.
Panasonic Lumix DMC-GF1 | Rated 100% by by A.-Feibus (May, 2010)
It is more compact in size relative to DSLR camera but able to produce close to DSLR quality images.
Panasonic Lumix DMC-GF1 | Rated 100% by by Enche-Tjin (Apr, 2010)
In standard mode the dynamic range isn't brilliant, with dark shadows and burned out highlights.

Focus

& GENERAL PERFORMANCEPanasonic GF1 inherits fast auto focus (AF) technology from its brother, Panasonic G1 which is awesome.
Panasonic Lumix DMC-GF1 | Rated 100% by by Enche-Tjin (Apr, 2010)
Fortunately the monitor is sharp enough for accurate manual focusing.
Panasonic Lumix DMC-GF1 | Rated 100% by by TrustedReviews (Dec, 2011)
You don't get the E-P1's total compatibility (it currently won't focus any Four Thirds lens that doesn't currently offer live view AF on an Olympus SLR), but those lenses it will focus, it will focus a helluva lot faster.

Video

While I'm not super into video, mirrorless cameras are known to be excellent for video, and it's just a capability I enjoy having.

Based around this, Panasonic has engineered the worlds first compact camera with "DSLR" level performance and has created an outstanding stills camera with good HD video camera capabilities.

Good, reasonably priced, subtle street photography camera

Originally wanted to buy a second hand M8 and then realised that I'd have to save up way too much money for that and a lens, and have been looking at both high end compacts and micro 4/3rds etc....
