On the plus side it’s undoubtedly a well featured and easy-to-use camera that’s capable of very good image quality.

All of the sample images in this Review were taken using the 16 megapixel Best JPEG setting, which gives an average image size of around 6.5Mb.
Pentax K-01 by Photography Blog (Apr, 2012)
The 16 megapixel JPEG images were a little soft straight out of the camera at the default sharpening setting and ideally require some further sharpening in an application like Adobe Photoshop, or you can change the in-camera setting.

sensor size

Pentax K-01
Pentax Q10
Pentax Q
For a mirrorless camera, the Pentax K-01 certainly isn't compact, when compared to Micro Four Thirds and even Sony NEX cameras, and is also relatively heavy, weighing 560g with the battery and memory card installed.
Pentax K-01 by TechRadar (May, 2012)
The Pentax Q is easily the smallest mirrorless camera on the market, with a sensor size to match while, with the K-01, Pentax also claims the crown for the largest mirrorless camera we've yet seen.

In addition, it feels particularly unbalanced, with significantly more weight distributed along the grip side of the camera.
Pentax K-01 by DPReview (Mar, 2012)
If you're looking for a small and lightweight camera, the K-01 isn't it - indeed, this is one of the biggest and heaviest mirrorless camera bodies released to date.

The K-01 is definitely not the performance champ when it comes to autofocus speeds.
Pentax K-01 by DPReview (May, 2012)
Unfortunately, the truth of the matter is that the K-01’s autofocus performance is just not that good.

A combination of careful noise reduction and sharpening in post processing can still yield good results though.
Pentax K-01 by TechRadar (May, 2012)
If the K-01 can successfully combine best-in-class image quality with a dedicated live view camera and many of the K-5's photographic features, then it'll really be the worth some attention.

DxOMark low light performance

In low light conditions and with low contrast subjects, a frustrating wait while the camera tracks back and forth attempting to find a lock is the norm.

As you might've guessed, this brightens the dark areas of your photos.

Thankfully, shutter lag isn't an issue, and shot-to-shot times were relatively brief.

The Pentax K-01 lets you dial in shutter speeds of up to 30 seconds and has a Bulb mode as well, which is very good news if you are seriously interested in night photography.

continuous shooting

Still, the K-01’s performance in continuous shooting mode was more than adequate, and performance in the rest of the camera was similarly satisfying.
Pentax K-01 by Nathan-Ingraham (Jul, 2012)
At this setting there is no upper limit on the number of consecutive shots you can take.

By spending 30 seconds in Photoshop, your ISO 12800 photos can now be printed even larger, and ISO 25600 suddenly becomes a lot more useful.

We didn't like the price quite so much - £679.99 / $899.95 with a lens is quite a lot to pay for a compact system camera, and comparable to the excellent Pentax K-5 with the same kit zoom lens.

ISO performance is another area where the K-01’s CMOS sensor performs very well.

The screen is bright and clear and provides wide viewing angles, but the glossy acrylic cover can hamper visibility when viewing the screen from an angle in bright conditions.

If you've got a stable of Pentax lenses - especially good ones that can properly resolve to the sensor - and feel like doing some creative shooting, especially with manual focus, then the K-01 is a great choice.

Lens

The other two lenses are standard Pentax kit lenses, neither of which will win any awards.
Pentax K-01 body only | Rated 69% by by DPReview (May, 2012)
Speeds vary depending on the lens you're using, with the 40 mm kit lens being one of the better ones.
Pentax K-01 body only | Rated 69% by by DPReview (May, 2012)
I switched to a friend's F2.8, 50 - 135 mm DA* lens, and it performed extremely well, as it should for its $1600 price tag.
Pentax K-01 body only | Rated 69% by by DPReview (May, 2012)

Focus

The 81-point contrast-detect AF is by no means the fastest we’ve seen on a camera of this type, and lags well behind all of its main competitors.
Pentax K-01 body only | Rated 70% by by TrustedReviews (Jun, 2012)
It’s a decent, if unspectacular rate — and if you’re using autofocus, expect your results to drop quite a bit from there.
Pentax K-01 body only | Rated 65% by by Nathan-Ingraham (Jul, 2012)
My original K-01 would produce out-of-focus photos about 50% of the time, with multiple lenses.
Pentax K-01 body only | Rated 69% by by DPReview (May, 2012)

Sensor

As for the latter, the 16.3-megapixel, APS-C CMOS sensor is right up there with its main competition in terms of raw pixel count and size (it’s the same sensor found in the Pentax K5 DSLR).
Pentax K-01 body only | Rated 65% by by Nathan-Ingraham (Jul, 2012)
It has a 16 Megapixel CMOS sensor, K-mount lens support with built-in (sensor-based) image stabilization, lots of manual controls, a boatload of scene modes and special effects, an HDR function, and 1080p video recording.
Pentax K-01 body only | Rated 69% by by DPReview (May, 2012)
I couldn't get better results processing the raw files (it uses DNG as its raw format) at any sensitivity.
Pentax K-01 body only | Rated 74% by by c|net (Apr, 2012)

Image quality

Dynamic range is good, with plenty of detail being retained in shadow and highlight areas.
Pentax K-01 body only | Rated 60% by by TechRadar (May, 2012)
At ISO 400 image quality is still very good with no noticeable noise.
Pentax K-01 body only | Rated 70% by by TrustedReviews (Jun, 2012)
Of course,we await the chance to put a production model through our studio tests and thoroughly evaluate operational speed and image quality.

Video

Overall, while it’s nice to have video included (and I appreciate the many resolution and frame rate combos available to users), the quality is ultimately not at the level where you’d want to do anything more than shoot a quick clip here and there for your personal enjoyment.
Pentax K-01 body only | Rated 65% by by Nathan-Ingraham (Jul, 2012)
The K-01 also offers the best video mode of any Pentax mirrorless or DSLR camera to date, with the inclusion of Full 1080p HD recording at a variety of frame rates, handy one-touch recording button, auto and manual focusing, the ability to change the aperture or shutter speed during recording, a socket for an external mic and an HDMI port for easy connection to your HDTV.
Pentax K-01 body only | Rated 70% by by Photography Blog (Apr, 2012)
At the end of the day, video is just not very good on the K-01 — I recommend looking elsewhere if you're a dedicated video shooter.
