On the positive side, a sharp screen image ensures that menu options and function icons also look clean, crisp and legible.

It has a brilliant 3-inch high-res AMOLED display, which works well even in bright sun, and Samsung's Smart Panel user interface (also found on its higher-end ILC cameras) letting you quickly change important camera settings from one screen.

Lens

On the front of the camera sits a 21x Schneider-KREUZNACH branded optical zoom that offers the 35mm focal range equivalent of 23-483mm.
Samsung WB850F | Rated 80% by by TrustedReviews (Jul, 2012)
The Samsung WB850F's 21x zoom lens provides a focal length of 23-483mm in 35mm terms, as demonstrated below.

The Samsung WB850F offers a Macro setting that allows you to focus on a subject that is 5cms away from the camera when the lens is set to wide-angle.

Zoom

The Samsung WB850 is a new travel-zoom camera with a mouth-watering specification.
Samsung WB850F | Rated 80% by by Photography Blog (Aug, 2012)
This essentially means that, as well as offering a long zoom range, the camera has its own built-in Wi-Fi functionality that allows you to upload your images to social networks and Picasa, send them directly from the camera via email or back them up to the cloud (or your home computer) anywhere you can connect to a Wi-Fi network.
Samsung WB850F | Rated 80% by by TrustedReviews (Jul, 2012)
Use the control pad or surrounding dial to select what you want to change and use the zoom control to cycle through the available options.

Video

The MobileLink app lets you send photos and videos straight to a smartphone for sharing when you don't have Wi-Fi.
Samsung WB850F | Rated 76% by by c|net (Aug, 2012)
A spring-loaded switch around the video record button lets you quickly change drive modes for burst shooting.
Samsung WB850F | Rated 76% by by c|net (Aug, 2012)
The remaining settings on the dial are for the aforementioned Wi-Fi, GPS and video options, though you don't actually have to have the shooting mode dial set to the latter to commence recording - hit the record button and after that brief wait you're away.
Samsung WB850F | Rated 80% by by Photography Blog (Aug, 2012)

Battery

If you regularly go out for a full day of shooting, you'll want to get an extra battery, and probably an external charger, too, since the battery is charged in the camera.
Samsung WB850F | Rated 76% by by c|net (Aug, 2012)
Lastly, battery performance is fairly mediocre.
Samsung WB850F | Rated 76% by by c|net (Aug, 2012)
Annoyingly though, if the camera is switched off or powers down to save battery it doesn't recall the drive previously selected when turned back on.
Samsung WB850F | Rated 80% by by Photography Blog (Aug, 2012)

Screen

Samsung does of course have expertise in screen technology, and here that gives rise to deeper blacks and better contrast when both composing and reviewing shots, which, coupled with a respectable 614,000 dot resolution, to our eyes results in a more life-like picture being relayed.
Samsung WB850F | Rated 80% by by Photography Blog (Aug, 2012)
With a resolution of 614k-dots, it offers impressive image reproduction with the same vibrant colour and generous levels of contrast that’s come to be associated with AMOLED screens.
Samsung WB850F | Rated 80% by by TrustedReviews (Jul, 2012)
Basically, if you're considering this for its online-sharing capabilities and don't typically make large prints above 8x10s, regularly enlarge and heavily crop pictures, or view them at large sizes on screen, it's a fine choice.

Family photos and videos, sometimes in low light

I have a Canon 1000D but i would like a more portable camera for movies and photos, mostly portraits and a companion camera for the vacations so some zoom would be ideal.
