At ISO 400 there's pretty noticeable detail loss, so I'd make this your stopping point, saving ISO 800 for desperation only.

If you are using the GPS, battery life will certainly drop, though Sony doesn't say by how much.

Do note that the battery is charged inside the camera (at least it's quick), so you'll need to pick up an external charger if you want to keep a spare battery ready for use.

Lens

Undoubtedly the biggest recommendation we have with the Sony Cyber-shot DSC-HX200V is that, by daylight, we were able to achieve sharp results shooting handheld with it with greater consistency than we have been able to achieve with pretty much any super zoom camera to date.

On the Sony the zoom action is still motor driven, however you handle it.

The large right hand grip makes holding the camera easy, and the fly-by-wire zoom/focus ring around the lens is a very nice touch.

Video it seems is becoming more refined on digital cameras than the point and shoot video modes of old where all you could do was vary the resolution.

Only a handful of cameras can do that, and what you get is smooth, non-interlaced video that looks great.

In both of those modes you can access a Photo Creativity menu, which lets you use "sliders" to adjust brightness, color tone, and saturation - all without knowing any technical terms.

As the examples above illustrate, you can get sharp (but noisy) photos in low light, or if your subject has a hard time staying still (Exhibit B is a poster child for that).
