- 9 MP
- 10x f/3.5
- 1/2.5" CMOS
- 3" LCD
Released January, 2010
Rated 90% by by Photography Blog (Apr, 2010)Thankfully once it's synced, the HX5's GPS receiver works a lot better than most other GPS-capable cameras that we've reviewed, saving accurate positioning information for the majority of the images that we shot in built-up central London, making this camera much more useful for urban photographers.

Rated 80% by by Mertz (Jul, 2011)Pros: Good value (I paid $194 and currently it's $189), generally happy with the photo quality (see cons), like the wide angle lens, good low light photos using handheld twilight setting, nice video quality at 720p (I don't have a hi-def TV so haven't tried the 1080p setting), satisfied with the battery life, panorama function is fun/amazing (especially if you use the vertical setting to pan on a horizontal plane), relatively compact size.

Cyber-shot DSC-HX5v by Photography Blog (Apr, 2010)Sony may be new to the travel-zoom game, but they've certainly made a bold entrance with the CyberShot DSC-HX5, which offers virtually all of the key features that several of its rivals collectively offer, wrapped-up in an easy-to-use package with an eminently sensible 10 megapixel sensor.
Cyber-shot DSC-HX5v by Elizabeth (Aug, 2011)IT may not have as many megapixels as i would like, but the features it carries for that low of a price is worth every penny.
sensor size
Cyber-shot DSC-HX5v by Wolf (May, 2010)At $350 plus $50 for a fast SDHC card the camera is less money than a Micro four thirds or SLR and a lot easier to carry.
Cyber-shot DSC-HX5v by Christy-N.-Butler-Photos--CNB (Mar, 2011)Still haven't utilized the 10 full frame " burst" yet, but I'm confident it will be also a great mode to photograph action.
wide angle lens
Cyber-shot DSC-HX5v by P.-Milkman--Filmie (Aug, 2011)My story is probably like many others - I've owned many cameras over the years, but was looking for something mindless and full featured...with good picture quality for both wide angle and zoom.
Cyber-shot DSC-HX5v by DR--a-consumer-who-expects-courtesy---respect (Jun, 2011)I especially wanted wide angle capability, 8-10x telephoto, and decent low light and flash photos in a pocket-sized package.
aperture size
Cyber-shot DSC-HX5v by Rick-in-VirginiaThere is no iris for f-stop control, so to limit light Sony has chosen to use a neutral density filter and you get only 2 f-stops.
Cyber-shot DSC-HX5v by DakarYou can change the speed and aperture by choosing Manual and Program modes.

Cyber-shot DSC-HX5v by Jayro (Apr, 2011)Thanks to HHT it is capable of taking low-light images of much better quality that you have a right to expect from a compact super zoom.

Screen
Sony Cyber-shot DSC-HX5v | Rated 100% by by Christy-N.-Butler-Photos--CNB (Mar, 2011)The Sony lacks the 26X Zoom, tilting LCD screen, But it is small and over all provides a great picture easily.
Sony Cyber-shot DSC-HX5v | Rated 60% by by Jessica-L.-Kruger--fsumom (Apr, 2010)I didn't adjust any settings and just started shooting, in bright sunlight, and the colors look great.
Sony Cyber-shot DSC-HX5v | Rated 80% by by Mani (Sep, 2011)The LCD screen is clearly visible even in broad daylight.
Video
Sony Cyber-shot DSC-HX5v | Rated 100% by by Jayro (Apr, 2011)As good as the still images are the HD video is much more impressive.
Sony Cyber-shot DSC-HX5v | Rated 80% by by Matt-Eye--Matthew (Sep, 2010)AVCHD (full-HD) movies look great, but somewhat noisy in low light, quite detailed.
Sony Cyber-shot DSC-HX5v | Rated 80% by by techmannn--techmannnThis camera does a better job than my last 2 camera auto-adjusting to changing light conditions while making a movie, so all in all, it is good for movies.
Format
Sony Cyber-shot DSC-HX5v | Rated 90% by by Photography Blog (Apr, 2010)Alongside this is the HDMI port, then a plastic cover that protects the lithium-ion battery that provides a respectable life of 300 shots and the removable memory card, with Sony now supporting the SD / SDHC format in addition to their own proprietary Pro Duo Memory Stick format that they have persisted with for so long.
Sony Cyber-shot DSC-HX5v | Rated 20% by by Baggu (Dec, 2011)It was a good camera just that I wasn't happy about using memory stick and since then I started using Canon, which have been awesome.
Sony Cyber-shot DSC-HX5v | Rated 100% by by D.-Pierce--pierce324 (Jul, 2010)I've had the HX5V since I replaced my Canon SD800IS in March, '10 and have been very pleased with what it has to offer.
Resolution
Sony Cyber-shot DSC-HX5v | Rated 80% by by P.-Smith (Oct, 2010)16 gb card has enough room for thousands of high res pictures.
Sony Cyber-shot DSC-HX5v | Rated 90% by by Photography Blog (Apr, 2010)Despite its big zoom lens, the HX5 is still quite a slender camera, measuring less than 3cms at its narrowest point and weighing 200g with the battery and memory card fitted, with a large 3-inch, 230k-dot resolution LCD screen at the rear.
Sony Cyber-shot DSC-HX5v | Rated 90% by by Photography Blog (Apr, 2010)It may not have the bigger 14x zoom, high-resolution LCD screen or more megapixels that its key rivals offer, but it does combine an awful lot of well-chosen wish-list features that instantly propel it to the status of serious contender for the travel-zoom crown.
