In addition, as we've found with other recent Sony cameras, both compact and interchangeable lens models, high-speed modes like Backlight Correction HDR and Hand-held twilight work well and add real value to the camera.

I should have known that going from 9 megapixels on the HX1 to 16 on the HX100 was too far a leap, so now I cherish my HX1 more than ever.
Cybershot DSC-HX100v by velero (Jul, 2011)
A step down in megapixels from my canon, but if the picture quality was great, I could live with that.

It's pretty obvious even after one day, how superior it is to any other camera in this sensor size class.
Cybershot DSC-HX100v by Byrna
Like all compact or "bridge" digital cameras, the smaller sensor limits image size and quality, though the jpegs on the HX100 are adequate.

The HX100V mimics the form factor and handling of an entry-level DSLR in a package housing a 27-810mm equivalent zoom lens and a compact camera-sized 1/2.3" CMOS sensor.

Add in the 3D Sweep Panoramas and 3D Still Images, amazing 10fps burst shooting mode and 0.1 second auto-focusing, and it's very easy for us to highly recommend the Sony CyberShot DSC-HX100V as an all-in-one, do-it-all camera that won't break the bank.

Lens

Chromatic aberrations are well controlled and colours accurate, and the incredible 27-810mm lens remarkably doesn't suffer from too much distortion at either end of the zoom range.

I am truly amazed at the shake free pictures that I get at 30X zoom made possible by optical shake correction.

The image stays crisp, even when zoomed in as far as it goes.

Zoom

Each generation of all camera brands lacked all of the features I wanted, such as 10 MP, live view, flip-down LCD (not swing-out), super zoom of 15x or more, image stabilization, easy to use auto-intelligence setting (for when I want a fast shot, e.g., for fast kids, dogs, birds, etc.), manual control settings available, ability to turn an on/off grid on display (for us who is composition challenged), long battery life, variety of charging options, and inexpensive memory cards.

Video

This point and shoot camera has finally meet my various expectations: long range, image quality, easy to use with options for manual controls, and high quality video, too.

Image quality

Here is what I liked and disliked....Likes: The camera is solid, has great features, great picture quality with sunlight, good high ISO up to about 800, SD card compatible, great zoom, good portrait low light pictures, great burst shooting, excellent video.
Sony Cybershot DSC-HX100v | Rated 60% by by Keith-in-Dallas--K (Oct, 2011)
On the other hand, the hand-held twilight mode can produce some really remarkable results in low light.
Sony Cybershot DSC-HX100v | Rated 100% by by A.-A.-Katz (Aug, 2011)
The Sony CyberShot DSC-HX100V's maximum shutter speed is 30 seconds in the Manual mode, which is great news if you're seriously interested in night photography.

Screen

One thing that upset me was that, when taking the photo in I mode, reviewing the picture on the LCD shows very strong color, as if it's using the "vivid" setting.
Sony Cybershot DSC-HX100v | Rated 100% by by X.-Chen (Jun, 2011)
It was bright and very sharp, making photo composition very easy.
Sony Cybershot DSC-HX100v | Rated 100% by by Byrna
The eye-sensor switches automatically between EVF and LCD views; a great time-saver, and the tilting LCD screen is very useful for shooting above your head or below waist-level.
