Sony NEX-7

  • 24 MP
  • APS-C CMOS
  • 3" LCD
Released August, 2011
Sony has included High Definition video shooting at Full HD 1080p at 50fps or 25fps with stereo sound and the very welcome ability to control the shutter speed, aperture and exposure compensation during recording, plus either continuous or manual focusing.

It's got excellent photo and solid video quality and generally fast performance.

As we'd expect from the pixel count, this is pretty well as good as it gets without making the considerable step up to medium format - impressive stuff from such a small camera.
NEX-7 by DPReview (Dec, 2011)
All of the sample images in this Review were taken using the 24.3 megapixel Fine JPEG setting, which gives an average image size of around 7Mb.

sensor size

Sony NEX-7
Sony Cyber-shot DSC-RX1
Olympus OM-D E-M5
Its 24.3-megapixel APS-C sensor is the same size as the one inside most DSLRs, and big sensors almost always mean better pictures.
NEX-7 by David-Pierce (Feb, 2012)
We've also included the Fujifilm FinePix X100, which like the NEX-7 has an APS-C sensor, extensive external controls and built-in electronic viewfinder, but sports a fixed 23mm F2 lens and decidedly retro design and layout.

body size

111 x 59 x 38 mm
133.1 x 99.8 x 78.8 mm
113 x 65 x 70 mm
This is a real shame, because the lightweight design of the body and the excellent resolving power of the sensor should make this an ideal application for this camera.

In manual focus mode, the NEX-7 uses the Focus Settings screen to engage MF assist, i.e. magnification of the live view display for more accurate focusing.

DxOMark image quality

Second, the display may be incredibly sharp, but it doesn’t do a good job accurately representing the picture you’re framing — colors are too saturated and too contrasted, making everything look very dramatic but not exactly accurate.

Handheld Twilight mode isn't a new function, but it is one which we have found useful in several recent Sony cameras.

shutter lag

0 ms
438 ms

742 ms
223 ms
300 ms
The advantage of such a system is that you don't need to cock the shutter or wait for it to mechanically trigger, which improves its response time.
NEX-7 by DPReview (Dec, 2011)
In other words, the camera no longer has to close the shutter then open it again to start the exposure, and according to Sony this decreases shutter lag from 100ms to just 20ms.
NEX-7 by DPReview (Dec, 2011)

continuous shooting

10 fps
4.3 fps
Indeed its continuous shooting performance is class-leading amongst the enthusiast-orientated mirrorless brigade, as it's capable of shooting at full resolution at 10 frames per second, or 3.7 fps while maintaining a live view feed.
NEX-7 by DPReview (Dec, 2011)
The camera bursts at about 3.5 frames per second with full autoexposure (odd, since it's rated at only 3fps).

230 photos
330 photos
The NEX-7's battery life is excellent, which surprised me in a camera this small.
NEX-7 by David-Pierce (Feb, 2012)
Sony suggests you should get 430 shots per charge using the LCD, and 350 with the EVF - we're not sure you'll necessarily get that many in practice, but 300 shots should be achievable and we wouldn't describe the battery life as problematic.

Reviews Word on the street

The NEX-7's can offer a preview of how your images will look in terms of brightness, white balance and colour rendition, as well as a truly accurate depth of field preview that's perfectly visible (if sometimes noisy) even when stopped down to very small apertures.

Read the review (Jan, 2012)
The Sony NEX-7's maximum shutter speed is 30 seconds and there's also a Bulb mode for even longer exposures, which is excellent news if you're seriously interested in night photography.
Rated 81%
Read the review (Feb, 2012)
The higher resolution of the NEX-7's sensor helps to compensate for the overprocessing, as the extra pixels help retain detail in the face of heavy luminance noise reduction (NR); that's one reason the NEX-7's JPEG photos still look much better than, say, the Olympus E-P3.

Read the review (Nov, 2011)
The built-in OLED viewfinder is a real bonus, providing a bright, clear view, and having a hotshoe and input for an external microphone both add to the flexibility of the system.

Lens

It's well worth running down the Settings menu and looking at such things as configuring the AEL/Focus button behaviour, turning on Auto Review, setting Wide Image to 'Full Screen' for movie recording, and enabling 'Release w/o lens' if you plan on using adapted lenses (etc).
Sony NEX-7 | Rated 81% by by DPReview (Dec, 2011)
Without such options as a wideangle zoom or a fast 'normal' prime, the sad fact is that your ability to play with unusual perspectives or shallow depth of field is limited compared to other systems.
Sony NEX-7 | Rated 81% by by DPReview (Dec, 2011)
Experienced photographers may also find the limited range of E-mount lenses off-putting, depending on their intended use for the camera.
Sony NEX-7 | Rated 80% by by TechRadar (Nov, 2011)

Sensor

As well as its high pixel count and 60fps 1080 output, the latest EXMOR CMOS sensor also has the ability to act as the first curtain of the shutter.
Sony NEX-7 | Rated 81% by by DPReview (Dec, 2011)
With so many pixels to play with, though, there's still plenty of detail in the JPEGs - but if you want to extract the best the camera can offer, you'll definitely need to shoot RAW.
Sony NEX-7 | Rated 81% by by DPReview (Dec, 2011)
What's more, everything can be changed while you're recording - shutter speed, aperture, ISO, and exposure compensation, depending on the mode you're in.
Sony NEX-7 | Rated 81% by by DPReview (Dec, 2011)

Video

The effect of doing so is really noticeable, but it's pretty great to be able to adjust your video on the fly.
Sony NEX-7 | Rated 88% by by David-Pierce (Feb, 2012)
Firstly, as far as the camera is concerned, movies are organized entirely separately from still images in their own 'folder' - indeed there are separate folders for each recording format (MP4 and AVCHD).
Sony NEX-7 | Rated 81% by by DPReview (Dec, 2011)
Naturally though any button-pressing or dial-spinning is liable to result in visible camera movement in your movies, unless you're using a solid tripod.
Sony NEX-7 | Rated 81% by by DPReview (Dec, 2011)

Focus

The NEX-7 also improves its AF response times by checking focus during live view every couple of seconds and refocusing when it considers necessary, so that whatever is covered by the active AF point is normally pre-focused.
Sony NEX-7 | Rated 81% by by DPReview (Dec, 2011)
For maximum control over movie mode autofocus we've found it's best to use Flexible Spot AF with the camera set to MF and the AF/MF button to hold.
Sony NEX-7 | Rated 81% by by DPReview (Dec, 2011)
The built-in EVF and focus 'peaking' display make manual focus easy; the AF/MF button can also be configured to bring up one-touch magnified focus assist.
Sony NEX-7 | Rated 81% by by DPReview (Dec, 2011)

Screen

Higher contrast can be a good thing on an OLED display — since the display isn’t backlit, darks can be much darker and everything can have a realistic, natural glow — but the effect goes too far here.
Sony NEX-7 | Rated 88% by by David-Pierce (Feb, 2012)
The 3-inch display is made up of a sharp 922,000 dots, and it recreates colors incredibly accurately.
Sony NEX-7 | Rated 88% by by David-Pierce (Feb, 2012)
By default the central button opens the shooting mode dial, but it can also be reconfigured to access the new Custom screen, which by default contains the ISO, white balance, flash, creative style and image size options.

At this time Sony produce the best sensors on the market, nearly every good 16MP sensor from Nikon comes from Sony. So the sensors on the Sony cameras are totally worth it.
