Released August, 2010
The continuous shooting speed of 10 fps at full resolution when using the EVF or in Live View mode is amazing for a mid-range camera, while Sony's long-standing D-Range optimizer function helps to even out tricky exposures, for example where a bright background would normally throw the foreground into deep shadow.

The Sony A55 can shoot full-resolution 16.2 megapixel pictures at up to 10fps whilst maintaining continuous auto focus and auto exposure, an impressively fast rate for such an inexpensive camera.
SLT-A55 by Photography Blog (Feb, 2011)
All of the sample images in this Review were taken using the 16.2 megapixel Fine JPEG setting, which gives an average image size of around 5Mb.

Image quality is very good, with results from the APS-C sensor rivalling the DSLR competition and in most cases surpassing the Compact System Camera alternatives, especially if you're after shallow depth-of field effects.
SLT-A55 by Photography Blog (Feb, 2011)
The main drawback when comparing the A55 to Micro Four Thirds models like the GH2 are the bigger Alpha lenses, but as a tradeoff you do get the same APS-C sensor as the NEX-3 and NEX-5 cameras with all the associated image-quality benefits of using a larger sensor.

The only disappointment was the size of the camera bag that was included with this package, as my camera really doesn't fit right in it regardless of which way I turn it.

I really love this camera, once you understand how to deal with it you will get a very good quality images and video, the continues auto focus in the movies is very good, the very fast shooting "10 frame per second" helps a lot when there is moving objects, auto HDR it you want...well it really has many great things, and also the package with it is very nice, just only i bought extra barriers and charger because i use it for long time, and also a remote.
SLT-A55 by Nouran (Sep, 2011)
As with Live View, continuous phase-detection AF is possible whilst shooting movies on the A55, a distinct advantage over DSLR cameras and fast enough to rival Compact System Cameras like the Panasonic Lumix GH1/2..

DxOMark image quality

Sony SLT-A55
Canon Rebel T4i

While there are still some obvious artifacts, there's a much better balance between sharpness and color noise reduction than I'm used to seeing in photos shot with older models.
SLT-A55 by c|net (Nov, 2010)
Most snapshooters looking to step up want something faster and with better overall photo quality than their current cameras, but usually want it for a lot less than the A55V costs.

DxOMark low light performance

The camera also includes Sony's usual assortment of multishot modes like Auto HDR (increased to six shots for a possible 6EV increase in tonal range), Handheld Twilight, Sweep Panorama, and Sweep 3D.
SLT-A55 by c|net (Nov, 2010)
The main downside of the A55's EVF system occurs indoors in low light, as it has to "gain-up" to produce a usable picture, resulting in a noticeably grainier picture.

With imperceptible shutter delay, a full resolution JPEG is committed to memory in just over a second in single shot mode, a RAW file in three.
SLT-A55 by Photography Blog (Feb, 2011)
The Sony A55's maximum shutter speed is 30 seconds and there's also a Bulb mode for even longer exposures, which is excellent news if you're seriously interested in night photography.

The standard burst mode clocks at about 6.1 frames per second; its Continuous Advance Priority AE mode is rated to hit about 10 frames per second, but you forgo the ability to control shutter speed.

SLT-A55 by c|net (Nov, 2010)
On the bottom of the camera is a shared compartment for a choice of either SD or Memory Stick to save images to, lithium-ion battery that supplies a life-span of 330 images with the viewfinder or 380 images in Live View mode, plus a metal tripod socket that's in-line with the centre of the lens mount.

At the rear of the A55 we find the free-angle 3-inch LCD screen, which has an impressively high resolution of 921,600-dots, 16:9 wideangle ratio and can be adjusted for brightness.

For point-and-shoot upgraders who want better video, the A55V gets a qualified recommendation; the quality is pretty solid, it can autofocus well enough for casual use (albeit loudly-you'll definitely want to use a hot-shoe microphone), and the interchangeable-lens system means you'll be able to put on a long zoom lens for shooting your kids' sports or school plays.

On top of that, there are some "gimicky" features that I love... smile detection to trigger the shutter... in-camera panorama shooting... a GPS... Yeah you probably don't need them, but they're surprisingly cool/useful..

Lens

nitpicky stuff...- the camera bag that comes with this kit is good, but too small for both lenses and the camera.
Sony SLT-A55 | Rated 100% by by jaypath (May, 2011)
The A55's top plate features the aforementioned shutter release button encircled by an on/off switch that visually apes the zoom levers found on some compact cameras.
Sony SLT-A55 | Rated 90% by by Photography Blog (Feb, 2011)
but i recomend to buy a wide angle zoom lens because the included lenses has a limitation when you use them in a small room and when you use the camera for video.

Sensor

The defining difference between the two categories is a mirror: in ILCs, light travels directly through the lens to the sensor, while in dSLRs, the light is either reflected up into the viewfinder by a mirror or allowed to directly hit the sensor for capture if the mirror is flipped up.
Sony SLT-A55 | Rated 78% by by c|net (Nov, 2010)
For high ISO sensitivities, Sony has vastly improved its noise-reduction feature in recent cameras.
Sony SLT-A55 | Rated 78% by by c|net (Nov, 2010)
At ISO 3,200 photos look acceptable unless you've got a lot of fine detail or edges where softness will be too obvious.
Sony SLT-A55 | Rated 78% by by c|net (Nov, 2010)

Focus

The Camera is "fast", focuses fast, provides great color reproduction, captures moving objects nicely (such as Ducks taking to flight, or Deer trotting through the woods, or your grandchild throwing a football).
Sony SLT-A55 | Rated 100% by by William-Bash--Someone-Who-Still-Cares (Oct, 2011)
There are a couple of caveats - the focusing can be heard on the soundtrack, although using an external microphone gets around this, it sometimes struggles to keep up with the subject, and more notably the shallow depth of field that's inherent to a large-sensor camera produces noticeable and often unwanted "jumps" as the AF system locks onto different subjects in the frame.
Sony SLT-A55 | Rated 90% by by Photography Blog (Feb, 2011)
There are some limitations of this ambitious design, most notably the almost complete inability to pan with your subject, limited creative control over movies, and rather noticeable jumps in focus if using continuous auto-focus during video recording, but overall the first-generation A55 feels remarkably mature.
Sony SLT-A55 | Rated 90% by by Photography Blog (Feb, 2011)

Viewfinder

& slightly smaller size are wonderful, and the Menu's of selections seen in the Viewfinder or LCD Screen are straight forward for the most part, and easy to use.
Sony SLT-A55 | Rated 100% by by William-Bash--Someone-Who-Still-Cares (Oct, 2011)
This combination means that the A55 can offer full-time DSLR-like focusing speeds, even during video recording, plus an excellent Live View system with 100% scene coverage and an amazingly fast continuous shooting rate of 10fps, whilst being physically smaller and lighter than a comparable DSLR.
Sony SLT-A55 | Rated 90% by by Photography Blog (Feb, 2011)

As a parent I take lots of pictures of events my kids are involved in and in fact have become the unofficial/official photographer for most of these events and let me say the 10 fps shooting speed is fantastic other parents and kids are so impressed I have made prints for several of them.

I also take a great deal of nature shots and landscapes and this camera delivers the goods.
Sony SLT-A55 | Rated 100% by by Ned-Goak--RN-Man (Aug, 2011)
The Sony A55 is a great marriage of new and old, competitively priced to take on the best that mid-range DSLRs and Compact System Cameras can offer, and surpassing both in many ways.
