Canon EOS 400D

  • 10.1 MP
  • APS-C CMOS
  • 2.5" LCD
Released August, 2006
Physically it is very similar to the 350D, with a lightweight and compact body made of tough polycarbonate plastic over a stainless steel chassis, although it is in fact a completely new body.

APS-C

Just like the EOS 350D the 400D is made from three main materials; a stainless steel chassis (blue in this diagram), the mirror box which is made of high-strength 'engineering plastic' (red in the diagram) and the body made of a special lightweight 'engineering plastic' which also provides some electromagnetic shielding.

The resolution is good, upgrading from the XT's 8.0 megapixels to 10.1 megapixels.
EOS 400D by amazon.com (Dec, 2006)
Indeed if anything the eight megapixel (EOS 350D) image looks slightly sharper 'per pixel' than the ten megapixel image from the EOS 400D.

The full frame monitor is a nice step up from the xt and the add'l MP is great when you need to enlarge photos.
EOS 400D by BRKLYN (May, 2008)
I am happy with this camera, however I can't wait for canon to come out with a full frame sensor, at a below 1000 dollar price.

View finder - Maybe I am so used to my regular 35mm film camera that I just have to have a view finder.
EOS 400D by S.-Tate (Feb, 2007)
The optical viewfinder is excellent.

It takes great photos and it is small enough to be easy to carry around without too much weight or size.5 stars is not enough for this.
EOS 400D by Kristin-Gabriel (Oct, 2007)
It takes amazing photographs, and is worth the money, and the added size and weight.

DxOMark image quality

Canon EOS 400D

I would recommend D60 or Sony DSLR for point-and-shoot up grader if color accuracy and saturation is not a problem OR wait for XSi.
EOS 400D by Mrinal-K.-Gayali--MKG (Apr, 2008)
Features are a nice improvement from the DSLR-wannabe I had before (Panasonic FZ30) but it's the image quality that's really the big step up.

I took pictures with this camera with artificial light, natural light, and when it was almost dark and all of my images came out sharp.
EOS 400D by The-Photographer--BuyMyButterfly-Photographer
I'm especially interested in low light photography, and have been very impressed with the sharpness and quality of the images even without a tripod.

continuous shooting

I loved the quietness of it as well in a continuous shooting mode as well as how quick it is in a single shot mode when taking really quick multiple shots.

The rapid fire shooting is great.

After comparing the Rebel XTI with the Powershot G7 I decided to buy the Rebel XTI becuase I wanted a camera, which had great reviews in terms of battery life, compactness, picture quality and durability.
EOS 400D by Mr.-Richard-Martinez--Rich (Jun, 2007)
In comparance with the Rebel XTI (both Canon digital cameras) at $450 it features good battery life, a lens comparable with the 28mm-200mm all around lens, and a built in stabilizer.

Reviews Word on the street

The Sony DSLR-A100 also has better ergonomics, spot metering, a bigger battery, faster USB and built-in CCD-shift Anti Shake (although we don't believe this to be as effective lens image stabilization).

The LCD display grew from 1.8 to 2.5 inches, which essentially squeezed the status/info LCD into the ether.

1/30th sec, F5.6, ISO 100 At 100 ISO the picture is clean, well detailed and noise free, everything we've come to expect from a Canon DSLR.

Even with an APC-C sized CMOS CCD, and a 1.6 Crop factor, With this camera at 10.1 mpxl you can make a photograph that can be enlarge far larger than you ever will.

The picture quality is fantastic, especially in more demanding settings (low lighting, quick movement, etc).

The quality of images taken is superb, and you have the option of saving to Canon's RAW format, for which Canon has delivered RAW viewers for both Windows Vista and XP.

Screen

Good looking camera with good handling (It looks just like the XSI to me, except smaller lcd screen).
Canon EOS 400D | Rated 80% by by E.-Nguyen (May, 2008)
And with a quick touch up in Adobe Lightroom, I'm turning out very good quality pictures (in my beginner opinion) with very little work required.

Sony and Olympus entry-level dslrs are packed with features and have good prices but the image quality is not quite as good as a Canon or Nikon.

Type

I bought the Rebel EOS Digital XTi 400D to upgrade my almost 3-year old Rebel EOS Digital 300D (which, by the way, is still a great camera).

After going through 3 generations of Canon compact digital cameras (s410 being the last and still working after 2.5 years), I am very glad to finally have made the investment in a digital SLR camera.

I previously used a Canon Rebel 35mm and then a Casio EXZ57 (awesome small digital point-and-shoot, which I still love)!

Iso

I've had the camera for a month now, and I really enjoy the quality of pictures I'm able to take, particularly when I lower the ISO and take the picture in RAW format.

1/125th sec, F8.0, ISO 800 At 800 ISO there is some colour speckling visible in the darker areas of the frame, but on the whole image quality is still very good.

It is said that shooting RAW is equivalent to getting an extra exposure (1.0 EV) and it can help you maintain usable details with acceptable noise at ISO 1600.

I am most passionate about travel photography and enviormental portrai

I shoot mostly travel photography> I also do a lot of envionmental portraits and I am always pushing myself to learn more and experimenting in other areas as well.  Good ISO is also important.
