The Sony DSLR-A100 also has better ergonomics, spot metering, a bigger battery, faster USB and built-in CCD-shift Anti Shake (although we don't believe this to be as effective lens image stabilization).

The 1000D is primarily made from three materials; a stainless steel chassis (blue in this diagram), the mirror box which is made of high-strength 'engineering plastic' (red in the diagram) and the body made of a special lightweight 'engineering plastic' which also provides some electromagnetic shielding.

The use of the main LCD monitor for status display worked well; Canon's choice of a white background making a quick glance all you need to know how the camera is configured.

Indeed if anything the eight megapixel (EOS 350D) image looks slightly sharper 'per pixel' than the ten megapixel image from the EOS 400D.
EOS Digital Rebel XTi by DPReview (Oct, 2006)
I shoot mostly at 5 megapixels to conserve file size and they are excellent.

The full frame monitor is a nice step up from the xt and the add'l MP is great when you need to enlarge photos.
EOS Digital Rebel XTi by BRKLYN (May, 2008)
For the most part, the XS offers a solid set of entry-level specs: 10-megapixel, APS-C-size, CMOS sensor (for Canon's traditional 1.6x focal-length multiplier) and 7-point user-selectable autofocus system.

View finder - Maybe I am so used to my regular 35mm film camera that I just have to have a view finder.
EOS Digital Rebel XTi by S.-Tate (Feb, 2007)
The baby Nikon proved to me that I wanted a "full-size" camera with view finder, and one with versatility and high quality results.

It takes great photos and it is small enough to be easy to carry around without too much weight or size.5 stars is not enough for this.

This is for photo hobbyists who need a quality camera and are will to trade in portability for quality.

I would recommend D60 or Sony DSLR for point-and-shoot up grader if color accuracy and saturation is not a problem OR wait for XSi.

The picture quality/resolution is excellent.

I took pictures with this camera with artificial light, natural light, and when it was almost dark and all of my images came out sharp.
EOS Digital Rebel XTi by The-Photographer--BuyMyButterfly-Photographer
Natural light - I am loving taking pictures with natural light and use the flash as little as possible.
EOS Digital Rebel XS by D.-Collins (Dec, 2010)

continuous shooting

I loved the quietness of it as well in a continuous shooting mode as well as how quick it is in a single shot mode when taking really quick multiple shots.
EOS Digital Rebel XTi by Dhaval-Patel (Jul, 2007)
Burst JPEG shooting outpaces all but the K200D, however, that camera is limited to about five shots per burst-the XS goes to at least 85.

The LCD display grew from 1.8 to 2.5 inches, which essentially squeezed the status/info LCD into the ether.

They're neither persistent nor large enough to be easy to spot, so I frequently found myself having to prefocus several times to make sure that the spot was on the correct subject and that it was focused.

1/30th sec, F5.6, ISO 100 At 100 ISO the picture is clean, well detailed and noise free, everything we've come to expect from a Canon DSLR.

The exposure system is also generally good, although I did find that it had a tendency to over-expose in some circumstances, particularly burning out highlights on some high-contrast subjects.
Rated 92% by 710 users at amazon.com
It is full-featured, takes quality shots, and is ridiculously easy and intuitive to use, a really nice job by Canon.
Rated 100% by by Snoosh--snoosh (Mar, 2007)
I've toyed with some of the color and sharpness settings and have had good results.-easy to use, intuitive, the center "set" button is reprogrammable also for easy use of certain features.-great for beginners, it's designed for the consumer, not pros, and I really have learned a lot from its simplicity.

I have taken some great pictures with the kit lens, however I will be upgrading my lens at the end of this month.

I did a ton of research before buying, and right now I still just have the kit lens, but I feel like this camera gives me exactly what I wanted:great quality, beautiful pictures.

The live view feature on the Canon is not as good or versatile as the Olympus but the other features to me, were better especially feel and handling.
Rated 100% by by Jack-Cameron (Jan, 2009)
Overall, for anyone who is getting into dSLRs, or needs a backup dSLR, I would recommend the Rebel XS.

sensor

To test the EOS 400D's USB speed we transferred approximately 200 MB of images (mixed RAW and JPEG) from a SanDisk Extreme IV 2 GB CF card (the same card used in the other readers).
Canon EOS Digital Rebel XTi | by DPReview (Oct, 2006)
The EOS 400D produced a consistent 8.4 EV of dynamic range from ISO 100 to 800, dropping to 7.8 EV at ISO 1600.
Canon EOS Digital Rebel XTi | by DPReview (Oct, 2006)
But when its predecessor-in this case, the EOS Rebel XT-was renowned for producing excellent, low-noise photos at a more-than-adequate 8-megapixel resolution, it's risky to replace it with a higher-resolution but potentially lower-sensitivity chip as Canon did with the EOS Rebel XTi.
Canon EOS Digital Rebel XTi | Rated 78% by by c|net (Sep, 2006)

screen

If you don't change lenses that often, don't mind the smaller LCD, don't need the slight bump in continuous-shooting speed, and don't need the higher resolution, then you don't really need to pay extra for the Canon EOS Rebel XTi.
Canon EOS Digital Rebel XTi | Rated 78% by by c|net (Sep, 2006)
The Canon EOS Rebel XTi's LCD's status display is extremely useful and easy to read, and it provides a single place to change all the relevant settings.
Canon EOS Digital Rebel XTi | Rated 78% by by c|net (Sep, 2006)
As previously mentioned the EOS 400D now uses the LCD monitor for camera settings display during normal shooting, this automatically blanking if you raise your eye to the viewfinder.
Canon EOS Digital Rebel XTi | by DPReview (Oct, 2006)

noise

Where the EOS 1000D scores highly is in final image quality, and especially in image noise control.
Canon EOS Digital Rebel XS | Rated 80% by by TrustedReviews (Dec, 2011)
There is no difference in highlight range between the 1000D and the 400D with which it shares a sensor, so the improvement in the shadow range is probably down to increased noise reduction.
Canon EOS Digital Rebel XS | by DPReview (Jul, 2008)
In our usual 30 second exposure test the EOS 400D produced only one or two 'hot pixels' which were easily taken care of with the optional long exposure noise reduction, which is in automatic mode by default.
Canon EOS Digital Rebel XTi | by DPReview (Oct, 2006)

image quality

The EOS 400D provides a wide range of control for image sharpening, contrast, color saturation and color tone.
Canon EOS Digital Rebel XTi | by DPReview (Oct, 2006)
My point and shoots NEVER survived in low light¡Kneedless to say I have fallen in love with my ¡§Rebel¡¨ and according to my husband, spend way too much time with ¡§her¡¨ ºIn my search for a good SLR that matched my budget, I chose the Canon Rebel Xti.
Canon EOS Digital Rebel XTi | Rated 100% by by Claire--Claire-Guthrie (Oct, 2007)
Despite my few complaints, the Canon EOS Rebel XTi still shoots some very nice photos, with good color rendition, broad dynamic range (when there's sufficient illumination), and accurate automatic white balance.
Canon EOS Digital Rebel XTi | Rated 78% by by c|net (Sep, 2006)

controls

I find the Rebel XS fits comfortably in my hands, that the buttons are easily found,(and to me at least) logically located.
Canon EOS Digital Rebel XS | Rated 80% by by N.-Skinner--Ranthil
The body size and shape is a much closer match, and the control layout is also almost identical to the 450D, although the 1000D has the 400D’s 2.5-inch 230K monitor.
Canon EOS Digital Rebel XS | Rated 80% by by TrustedReviews (Dec, 2011)
Most buttons are now to the right of the screen (unlike the 400D which had a set of buttons down the left side of the LCD).

The XS and XTi are nearly identical. If you have found both for the same price but the XS comes with all those additional accessories then I think your choice is clear. View Philip-Davis's recommendation
