Well, I am so thrilled now to have traded in some old film gear and buy the new full frame digital M9!!! I just love it and its reminding me all over again why I loved the M6!!! To carry this quality of a camera around with me in a small bag, discreetly, and take these kind of photos again whenever I feel like it, and as many as my SD card and battery charge can handle, is just grand.

Fine detail is retained impressively well at high ISOs where other cameras in its class are visibly suffering; even at ISO 3200 images looks clean yet detailed.

Both Canon and Nikon use full frame sensors with resolutions of 25 Megapixels BUT they DO use anti-aliasing filters.
M9 by JazzMann--Jazz-Wine-Sun (Feb, 2012)
But the adv pantage goes to Sony with it's extra Megapixels and that beautiful Zeiss lens that can really resolve some amazing detail and can go along way in making up for its fixed 35mm lens with some post processing cropping.

Fujifilm X-E1
Because of the extraordinary clarity and speed of the lenses coupled to a full frame sensor, the M9 has the same depth of field characteristics as a DSLR and can take terrific selective focus shots.
M9 by George (Oct, 2012)
One of the things that most impressed us about the X-Pro1 was its APS-C sized X-Trans CMOS sensor, and the good news is that the X-E1 uses the very same chip.

With careful packing, the M9, a spare battery and three lenses all fit in a little Domke F-5XA camera bag and it only weighs a few pounds!
M9 by James-Maier--carbon111 (Oct, 2012)
Ultimately, the Fujifilm X-E1 is a great little camera with a unique, retro design aesthetic, which works with a slowly growing selection of impressive lenses, and brings home images from both bright and dark places that rival some pretty heavy hitters.

If you're used to the modern Canon and Nikon battery life you'll be disappointed at the Leica battery performance.

But since it uses more energy, the battery life is just as short as any prosumer camera.

While it's no Canon 5D MK II, low-light performance on this camera is excellent at ISO 800 and acceptable at ISO 1250.
Rated 100% by by Scott-Bourne--Scott-Bourne (Jul, 2011)
These lenses are sharper and more contrasty than what I've gotten used to, even when shot at wide apertures - and that even applies to the wide-angle lenses!

If size and image quality are paramount, and you like the rather considered process of using a rangefinder with a manual focus lens, then maybe the Leica M9 or M-E is a good fit for you.

I find getting around on the X-E1 is super quick MUCH better than the Nex7,and the X-E1 is quite intuitive to use.
Rated 100% by by Radio-Man--yarns13 (Nov, 2012)
My experience with the kit lens is that it does a good job, on par with Canon and Nikons IS/VR systems in thier lenses.

The memory card is on the side which I prefer so you don't have to detach it from a tripod plate to swap out the memory card.

sound

To make the camera less obtrusive there's a Silent menu option which turns off the speaker, flash, AF-assist lamp and most importantly the artificially-created shutter-release sound, instantly making the X-E1 perfectly suited to candid photography.
Fujifilm X-E1 | Rated 90% by by Photography Blog (Nov, 2012)
I think its shutter sound is closer to my Leica MP than the Leica M9 is.
Fujifilm X-E1 | Rated 100% by by Ron-Greer (Dec, 2012)
One important consideration for the X-E1's target market is operational noise, and especially the shutter; one great attraction of this type of camera is that with no flapping mirror, it can in principle be rather quieter than an SLR.
Fujifilm X-E1 | Rated 79% by by DPReview (Feb, 2013)

shutter

You can choose for the M9 to display a review of the image taken immediately after shutter release, if enabled you can set the display duration (1 to 5 seconds, permanent or with the shutter release) and the display type (with or without a histogram).
Leica M9 | by DPReview
In conditions where I had an f/2 wide open at slow shutter speeds the split image worked very well and, in my first few weeks, I find myself struggling with my M9.
Leica M9 | Rated 100% by by Jim-Gerdy--jjg
The Fujifilm X-E1's maximum shutter speed is 30 seconds in the Time shutter speed mode, and there's a Bulb mode which allows exposures up to 60 minutes long, which is excellent news if you're seriously interested in night photography.

battery

for my travel companion I used to use my Contax G's the lens and the quality I got from 35mm were un-matched ... the camera itself was so clean and simple to use , the only problem was the batteries ...the Fujifilm X-E1 is the second coming of that Contax G2 ,in digital form ... the pictures quality is the best I have seen compared to any of my DSLR(D40 and D300).
Fujifilm X-E1 | Rated 100% by by 2bkalm.. (Dec, 2012)
There are a few plastic buttons and controls on the X-E1, most notably the memory card / battery compartment door and the flap for the HDMI port, both of which wouldn't look or feel out of place on a cheap compact, but other that that the X-E1 offers excellent build quality.
Fujifilm X-E1 | Rated 90% by by Photography Blog (Nov, 2012)
My favorites are: a B+W Kaesemann CPL especially for outdoors shooting, a one dollar Bower Pro Lens Cap Keeper - you're guaranteed to lose the 35 mm f1.4's lens hood cover without one of these, a Eye-Fi wifi SD card to compensate for the X-E1's lack of wifi and gps, and an Apple Mac AC power adapter duck head to replace the unwieldy cord that comes with the battery charger.
Fujifilm X-E1 | Rated 100% by by ss (Mar, 2013)

grip

One major drawback to the HG-XE1 grip (see image above) is having to remove it to change the battery and card; it really provides that Leica M9 experience, but not in a good way.
