Like the SD 4000 IS, the P300 offers excellent build quality and manual control in a genuinely compact body, for less cash than the larger sensor, RAW-enabled Powershot S95, or its 'big brother' the Coolpix P7000.

The Nikon P310 features a 16 megapixel BSI CMOS sensor, full manual controls, 1080p HD video recording, a fast maximum aperture of f/1.8, a high-resolution LCD screen and 5fps burst shooting.
Coolpix P310 by Photography Blog (Apr, 2012)
The overall sharpness on the pictures from the SL350 is virtually identical to the Nikon p300 eventhough the Samsung is 10 megapixel versus the Nikon's 12 megapixel sensor; and the Samsung allows more control over settings, if you so desire - such as color balance for different lighting conditions as well as saving a raw file along with a jpeg file.

So far the photos are above average quality for the price range / sensor size.

Wide angle shots fare better, with most images showing good edge-to-edge sharpness.
Coolpix P310 by DPReview (Jun, 2012)
Everyone else I travelled with stopped using their cameras after a while and we just used the P300 because the pics were so much better (Crisper images, better in low light (no flash needed), nice wide angle lens, etc, etc).

Still, dual controls for setting the aperture and shutter speed is very rare on any compact, so kudos to Nikon for including both on the P310.

All three manufacturers offer a pocket compact with full manual controls, pro-level features and good image quality, with the Nikon P300 also adding full 1080p HD video, fast maximum aperture of f/1.8, high-resolution screen and 7fps burst shooting.

Viewed from the perspective of the average point-and-shoot upgrader though, the P310 is a small, pocketable camera with improved ergonomics, that offers full manual control over exposure and gives decent if not exceptional image quality in a wide variety of shooting conditions.
Coolpix P310 by DPReview (Jun, 2012)
If you want full manual control in a lightweight, well-constructed (and relatively inexpensive) body, and you like the idea of twin control dials but don't care about being limited to JPEG capture, you will probably love the P300.

The quality is not as good as my Canon DSLR, especially when you look at 100% magnification, but better than all the compact cameras I owned before.

battery life

230 photos
240 photos
Like the P510, its long-zoom sibling and some Samsung compact cameras, the P310's 230-shot (CIPA rated) battery is charged in-camera with its USB AC adapter; the battery can also be charged via a computer's USB port.
Coolpix P310 by DPReview (Jun, 2012)
The battry life is also amazing and I probably won't need the other 2 batteries but for backup only.
Coolpix P300 by Diani (Jun, 2011)

max continuous shooting

The headline continuous shooting speed is 6fps – however, if you select this frame rate you’ll only be able to capture five frames at full resolution, making it not entirely useful.
Coolpix P310 by TrustedReviews (May, 2012)
You can also turn on continuous shooting which does something like 7 or 8 shots per second at full resolution, almost twice as fast as my D90 DSLR!

The P300's 3in LCD screen is bright and contrasty, and the high resolution means that it is possible to accurately review your images for focus and exposure on the camera, without needing to take a closer look on a computer.

The zoom itself covers a 35mm equivalent focal range of 24-100mm, although the main draw is really its fast maximum aperture.

As others have mentioned about cameras in this range, they will not compare to the DSLR in terms of either features or quality, but for what it is, it fits the bill perfectly.

The pictures are crystal clear and the camera is so easy to use.

I like the camera, it has a choice of full manuals controls, or aperture preferred, or shutter preferred, or fully automatic; it also has exposure bracketing, and many other features I have yet to learn.

sensor

Using the same ISO, Shutter Speed and Aperture the P310 at ISO 100, f/5.0 and 1/500sec produced bright clear noise free shots outdoors.

video/audio. There are minor P310 "improvements" such as a "better" stability system (not needed or noticed), 16 megapixels up from 12 megapixels (a step backward - who needs large posters with noise)?
Nikon Coolpix P310 | Rated 60% by by Gladius (Apr, 2012)
Like the P300, the P310 offers a fast, f/1.8 lens at wide-angle but is now built around a 16 megapixel sensor, offers a higher maximum ISO by adding a Hi 1 equivalent to 6400, is outfitted with a new function (Fn) button, 3D capture, interval shooting and a pre-shooting cache continuous mode along with a few other minor changes.
Nikon Coolpix P310 | Rated 69% by by DPReview (Jun, 2012)

image quality

The Nikon Coolpix P310's maximum shutter speed is 8 seconds in the Manual mode, which is good news if you're seriously interested in night photography.
Nikon Coolpix P310 | Rated 80% by by Photography Blog (Apr, 2012)
When the Night Landscape scene mode is selected, the P310 takes several shots at a fast shutter speed and then combines them to create a single optimized photo, allowing you to shoot after dark without having to use a tripod.
Nikon Coolpix P310 | Rated 80% by by Photography Blog (Apr, 2012)
Like most compact cameras, the P310 doesn't have an optical viewfinder but its 3-inch, 9210,000 dot LCD works well under most outdoor lighting conditions and brightens up under low light indoors.
Nikon Coolpix P310 | Rated 69% by by DPReview (Jun, 2012)

resolution

The P310 is almost as good but has too many megapixels (i.e., more megapixels and the same size sensor - a typically small P. &S 1/2.3 = more noise + the need to use a lower ISO) - 16 megapixels vs 12 megapixels.
Nikon Coolpix P310 | Rated 60% by by Gladius (Apr, 2012)
The Nikon Coolpix P310 is a rather modest upgrade of Nikon's first foray into the world of pocket cameras for keen photographers, the P300, principally increasing the megapixel count from 12 to 16 and adding a handy customisable Function button.
Nikon Coolpix P310 | Rated 80% by by Photography Blog (Apr, 2012)
The P300 also has 60fps and 120fps bursts; both capture up to 60 1-megapixel frames at a press of the shutter release.
Nikon Coolpix P300 | Rated 76% by by c|net (Sep, 2011)

iso

The P310 offers many of the same features as its competitors such as manual exposure controls and full HD video, but at its heart is a sensor considerably smaller than most of its rivals, which means less control over depth of field at equivalent apertures and potentially poorer image quality in marginal lighting at high ISO settings.
Nikon Coolpix P310 | Rated 69% by by DPReview (Jun, 2012)
Three observations: there is no viewfinder; the small camera size can make it difficult to hold and operate (change aperture) with one hand (P6000 is easier to operate with one hand); there is no ISO 64 on the P310, lowest is ISO 100.
Nikon Coolpix P310 | Rated 100% by by MaxConcrete (Jun, 2012)
Even when the ISO is automatically boosted to 800 outdoors at dusk, shutter speeds of 1/20th are not uncommon and while the P310's lens-shift vibration reduction works very well under most conditions, most of these shots were blurry.
Nikon Coolpix P310 | Rated 69% by by DPReview (Jun, 2012)

low light

My favorite part about the P300, was that I could stand on my balcony in Las Vegas and take a crystal clear picture of the strip lit up at night, with no tripod.
