Rated 90% by by Photography Blog (Mar, 2012)The three-inch rear LCD screen is much nicer to look at, thanks to its high resolution of 921,000 dots.
Rated 80% by by Photography Blog (Oct, 2010)Anyone upgrading from a point-and-shoot compact will be faced with an initial learning curve, but once you've got used to the operational quirks you'll soon be confidently shooting candids and close ups thanks to the creative flexibility that the amazing long lens affords.
Conclusion Which is better for you?
Features Key features of the Nikon Coolpix P510 compared to the Canon PowerShot SX30 IS
MP15.9
1/2.5"
Rated 90% by by Photography Blog (Mar, 2012)It also offers SLR-like handling, manual exposure and focus, an eye-level viewfinder, an articulated and high-resolution LCD screen, built-in GPS and full HD movies with stereo sound, full-time AF and optical zoom as well.
14 MP
1/2"
Rated 40% by by Bob (Jun, 2011)The macro close-up function also provides very inconsistent/poor results.
megapixels
| 0 MP | 15.9 MP | 20 MP |
Coolpix P510 by GSFixit--GSFixit (Jul, 2012)With the 16 megapixel capability, you still get great pictures even when you have to crop heavily.
PowerShot SX30 IS by Photography Blog (Oct, 2010)Unfortunately the longer lens and move to a 14 megapixel sensor doesn't do the SX30's image quality any favours, especially in low-light, and the official price increase puts it into direct competition with other premium super-zooms, entry-level DSLRs and compact system cameras.
sensor size
Coolpix P510 by Crosswire--Crosswire (May, 2012)I knew that a super zoom would have a small sensor, it had to, because of the size of the lens.
PowerShot SX30 IS by David-SiegfriedThe image quality will never be as good as a DSLR or a Micro Four Thirds camera such as the Panasonic DMC-GH1 and I would not recommend this camera for professional or fine arts photography, but it would be a convenient and versatile choice under daylight conditions when you want to carry a minimum amount of equipment.
wide angle lens
Coolpix P510 by pugged (May, 2012)A DSLR would provide more options for wide angle shots, but this camera is perfect for me.
PowerShot SX30 IS by Gary-R.-Kornberger--Circle-K-Estates-Gary-K (Apr, 2011)Excellent camera.... The wide angle and zoom are to die for.
aperture size
Coolpix P510 by Photography Blog (Mar, 2012)For its size, the P510's lens is also respectably fast, with maximum apertures of f/3 at 24mm and f/5.9 at 1000mm.
PowerShot SX30 IS by Pushpakant-N.-Kulkarni--PKulkarnithe F numbers or the F-Stops as they were referred to in the old days, are aperture sizes.
zoom range
| 0x | 41.7x | 50x |
Coolpix P510 by Vishui got this cam recently, no doubt it has amazing zoom capacity and can take great pictures HANDHELD at full zoom.
PowerShot SX30 IS by Photography Blog (Oct, 2010)Being able to shoot 720p high-definition video complete with image stabilisation, stereo sound and the ability to make full use of that incredible 35x zoom is a real attraction and something that no other compact camera can currently match.
body size
120 x 83 x 102 mm
123 x 92 x 108 mm
Coolpix P510 by c|net (Mar, 2012)And the lens is really the bulk of the weight, which makes the rest of the body feel lightweight and cheaply constructed.
PowerShot SX30 IS by Hawaiian-EyeSo, If you want a lightweight camera, that has the ability to capture excellent photos, and you like to adjust things, besides having full automatic features.
Performance Real world tests of Nikon Coolpix P510 vs Canon PowerShot SX30 IS
shutter lag
Coolpix P510 by Jeffrey-L.-Foster--kidphotoShutter lag, lack of a rapid fire sports quick setting, and a few other settings have been a disappointment.
max continuous shooting
Coolpix P510 by DPReview (Jul, 2012)The P510's maximum framerate of 7 frames per second is unlikely to get much use, but it's nice to have, although the maximum 5 frames per burst greatly limits its usefulness.
