PS: I just tried adjusting the settings specifically to 8 fps, which is a choice on the sports settings menu, right before submitting this review and still could not get clear pictures of my son running in the yard on a very bright day at ISO 800.

With the 16 megapixel capability, you still get great pictures even when you have to crop heavily.
Coolpix P510 by GSFixit--GSFixit (Jul, 2012)
If you're OK with smaller, 8-megapixel images (and you should be), you can get up to a fast 11fps.

sensor size

Nikon Coolpix P510
Fujifilm FinePix HS30 EXR
I knew that a super zoom would have a small sensor, it had to, because of the size of the lens.
Coolpix P510 by Crosswire--Crosswire (May, 2012)
But at least the Sony has an APS-C sized sensor compared to the tiny one on the 30EXR.

wide angle lens

Nikon Coolpix P510
Fujifilm FinePix HS30 EXR
A DSLR would provide more options for wide angle shots, but this camera is perfect for me.
Coolpix P510 by pugged (May, 2012)
Throw in the 1cm Super Macro Mode and impressive maximum apertures of a bright f/2.8 at 24mm wide-angle to a slightly brighter f5.6 at 720mm telephoto, and it's clear that the HS30EXR is perfectly suited for any subject that you can think of, near or far.
FinePix HS30 EXR by Photography Blog (Apr, 2012)

aperture size

Nikon Coolpix P510
Fujifilm FinePix HS30 EXR
For its size, the P510's lens is also respectably fast, with maximum apertures of f/3 at 24mm and f/5.9 at 1000mm.
Coolpix P510 by Photography Blog (Mar, 2012)
The lens itself is a Fuji-made Fujinon optic that offers a maximum aperture of f/2.8 at 24mm, rising progressively to f/5.6 at around 350mm and beyond.

i got this cam recently, no doubt it has amazing zoom capacity and can take great pictures HANDHELD at full zoom.
Coolpix P510 by Vishu
This gives the HS30 a big advantage over its competitors, simply because it’s much quicker and far more intuitive to operate than the fiddly, spring-loaded power-zoom controls employed by its rivals.

body size

120 x 83 x 102 mm

And the lens is really the bulk of the weight, which makes the rest of the body feel lightweight and cheaply constructed.
Coolpix P510 by c|net (Mar, 2012)
Weight and size suitable for everyday use, I think one very remarkable feature is the digital level, which keeps the horizon with ease.

Performance Real world tests of Nikon Coolpix P510 vs Fujifilm FinePix HS30 EXR

shutter lag

Nikon Coolpix P510
Fujifilm FinePix HS30 EXR
Shutter lag, lack of a rapid fire sports quick setting, and a few other settings have been a disappointment.
Coolpix P510 by Jeffrey-L.-Foster--kidphoto
Although all of the publicity says that you can use shutter speeds "from 30 seconds through 1 / 3200 of a second," that is not quite literally true.
FinePix HS30 EXR by John-Sturgeon

battery life

200 photos
600 photos
Overall, this camera is very fun to use, and it's weakest points are bareable and are most regarding to battery life.
Coolpix P510 by Edward (Mar, 2012)
At around 600 shots battery life is much improved thanks to the adoption of a Lithium-ion rechargeable battery.
FinePix HS30 EXR by Photography Blog (Apr, 2012)

max continuous shooting

The P510's maximum framerate of 7 frames per second is unlikely to get much use, but it's nice to have, although the maximum 5 frames per burst greatly limits its usefulness.
Coolpix P510 by DPReview (Jul, 2012)
Once the burst is completed, it now takes just over two seconds for the camera to clear the buffer, during which you cannot take another picture, a massive improvement on the HS20EXR.

The Nikon Coolpix P510 may not produce the best photos at higher ISO speeds or focus quickly enough for fast-moving subjects, but it's a lot more portable and convenient than an SLR with a bag full of lenses and also doubles up as an effective video camera thanks to its excellent movie mode, making it worthy of our Highly Recommended award.

Full 1080p movie recording with stereo sound is the icing on the cake, making the HS30 a viable replacement for your video camera too.

And despite having a 16-megapixel EXR CMOS sensor like last year's HX20EXR, the new model gets an improved sensor and processor for better performance and image quality.

I bought it for the super zoom, and the zoom is great.
Rated 100% by by pugged (May, 2012)
This camera has AMAZING color quality, faster shutter speed, captured photos way faster speeds, a viewfinder, and captures 1080p movies (and yes, like other reviews have stated, you CAN hear the zoom on video playback, but I can overlook that for all its other features) this was a wonderful option for me and I highly recommend it!

It does feature a slot on the top for an external flash which may be useful as the built in one isn't very impressive.

focal length

I've been waiting for more than 1 year for a super-zoom camera with the focal range and features the P510 has.
Nikon Coolpix P510 | Rated 100% by by JAL001 (May, 2012)
Offering the 35mm focal range equivalent of 24-720mm the HS30 is bettered only by Nikon's 42x P510 and Canon's 35x SX40.
Fujifilm FinePix HS30 EXR | Rated 80% by by TrustedReviews (Jun, 2012)
Considering that with an SLR, you would need at least 3-4 lenses to cover the same focal range, the single, fixed-mount lens of the Nikon P510 can be described as remarkably compact, even if it does extend quite a bit when zoomed to full telephoto.
Nikon Coolpix P510 | Rated 90% by by Photography Blog (Mar, 2012)

lens

I have a Nikon D80 with AF-S Nikkor 18-55mm, 55-200mm, and 70-300mm lenses that takes excellent photos, but for everyday outdoor photography, it's very difficult to beat the little COOLPIX P510 because you don't have to change lenses to get that great telephoto shot.
Nikon Coolpix P510 | Rated 100% by by ohitsyoubob (Sep, 2012)
The Nikon Coolpix P510's 42x zoom lens provides an astonishing focal range of 24-1000mm in 35mm terms, as demonstrated below.
Nikon Coolpix P510 | Rated 90% by by Photography Blog (Mar, 2012)
But, regardless, the Nikon Coopix P510 is overall a very good full-size megazoom even if you never use the full zoom range.
