And the P7100 does have a built-in flash which works well.3rd, it has a more powerful zoom lens than its competitors with the same size sensor (Canon G12, Panasonic LX-5, Olympus XZ-1).

Likewise a 7-bladed aperture for smooth rendition of out of focus areas and two extra-low dispersion elements - good to see in a compact camera, and indicative of Nikon's desire that the P7700 be taken seriously by photographers.

I was looking for a compact camera with the following features: raw format, extensive white balance controls, very good lens, adjustable on-board flash, compatibility with external speedlight(s), and a viewfinder that synched to the zoom lens.

What is perhaps more of an issue is the Auto AF’s patchiness when asked to pick out the main subject in a scene; we found with some regularity that we had to swap from automatic AF mode into one of the user-defined ones and set the AF point ourselves, which kind of defeats the point of having an automatic AF mode in the first place.

In addition to the built-in pop-up flash, the P7100 also sports a hotshoe that accepts flashguns from the Nikon Speedlight range should you require a bit more power than the GN7 @ ISO 100 of the built-in strobe.

I thought I would miss the OVF but even in bright sun, the LCD is perfectly adequate.

Luckily for us, the quality of the equipment that is available to us in advanced digital compacts continues to improve, as I've noted with the outstanding Sony and Canon offerings noted above.

The P7700 will knock out 8 FPS, but you'll wait after that for the buffer to clear.

I like the P7700's photo quality more than I expected - I'm not a huge fan of BSI sensors - and most surprisingly found it performs better in bright light than dim.

I chose the Nikon P7700 because I wanted the articulated display and a longer zoom (and the P7700's lens is plenty bright for my needs).

I bought a Nikon COOLPIX P7700 12.2 MP Digital Camera with 7.1x Optical Zoom NIKKOR ED Glass Lens and 3-inch Vari-Angle LCD and I was impressed by the quality of the images compared to the price of the camera.

Other less versatile offerings may excel on either end of the zoom range, but Nikon has done a very good job of striking a "happy medium" with the P7700.

In addition to regular JPEG capture the P7700 also allows you to shoot Raw for enhanced digital darkroom flexibility – something that’s pretty much expected of any serious advanced compact these days.
Nikon Coolpix P7700 Hands-on P | Rated 80% by by TrustedReviews
The bigger benefit of that larger maximum aperture is that in poor light, you shouldn't have to select the P7700's highest ISO settings as often as you would with the P7100.

ergonomics

The P7700's control layout and handling is very similar to its predecessor, offering a winning combination of dials and wheels, with the two Function buttons and the front and rear command dials in particular boosting the P7700's intuitiveness.
Nikon Coolpix P7700 Hands-on P | Rated 90% by by Photography Blog (Oct, 2012)
Once one gets used to the P7700, and that doesn't very take long, the ergonomics and controls are excellent.
Nikon Coolpix P7700 Hands-on P | Rated 100% by by John-Williamson (Oct, 2012)
Given that the P7700 is aimed at enthusiast photographers it comes as no great surprise to find that there’s an abundance of physical controls littered about the camera’s body, especially on the back.
