Image quality is still excellent, with a usable ISO range of 80-800 and fast f/2.0 maximum aperture, albeit only at the wide-angle lens setting, making the S95 very well-suited to low-light, hand-held photography.

A lot of other brands will boast 5 zillion megapixel resolution, but this camera takes way better pictures under any conditions.

sensor size

Nikon Coolpix S8200
Canon PowerShot S95
All of the sample images in this Review were taken using the 16 megapixel Fine JPEG setting, which gives an average image size of around 6Mb.
Coolpix S8200 by Photography Blog (Oct, 2011)
I don't want to see Canon turn this into some sort of super zoom - or movie maker (unless they can keep the size the same with a bigger sensor) I don't want GPS or any idiot modes.

These shots of a white coloured wall were taken at a distance of 1.5m. Forced Off - Wide Angle (25mm).

The image quality is SO IMPRESSIVE!!! I really love this compact camera!!!The only drawback that I can think of is that S95 has a wide-angle of 28mm, which is not as good as S100's 24mm.
PowerShot S95 by gallup (Nov, 2011)

aperture size

Nikon Coolpix S8200
Canon PowerShot S95
Indeed, according to the specifications (pg 6) the aperture has only 2 positions f3.3 and f6.6 (at the widest zoom), although you don't have a choice even there.
Coolpix S8200 by Stoney (Jul, 2012)
I find for most of what I do, the big zoom is unnecessary, and I try to shoot at full wide when indoors to take advantage of that fast lens.

While I love the idea of the P300s fast 1.8 lens, the P300s zoom range is around 24-100mm, whereas this camera's is 25-300mm, and I really need the zoom more than the fast lens.
Coolpix S8200 by LittleReadBooks--n--More--LittleReadBooks--n--More (Dec, 2011)
Overall the price was a little high, and zooming was sub-par but the quality and customization more than made up for it.

The Nikon Coolpix S8200 is a new point-and-shoot travel-zoom camera, featuring a 14x, 25-350mm lens and a 16 megapixel back-illuminated CMOS sensor.

The brand new Canon PowerShot S95 compact camera is the more refined successor of last year's S90 model, additionally offering 720p HD video, Hybrid IS technology and in-camera HDR shooting.

Much of this is only visible if you view the shots at 100 percent on screen, so those looking to make large prints or do a lot of enlarging and heavy cropping-especially of low-light shots or of things taken with the lens fully extended-will probably want to pass on this camera.

The clarity, sharpness, and color balance are amazing.-Size: for the features and photo quality, the size is perfect.
Rated 100% by by Liam-H-Dooley (Oct, 2010)
One of the main reasons was the exclusion of at least 720p video (I have a 7D and i do mostly video work, so i like to see a good movie mode on a digital camera :p).

When you play these movies back with decent speakers, the sound is amazing!

type

I've also used the Fujifilm Finepix F505 EXR, which I find much better than this camera, and the Canon S95 which just blows this camera out of the water and is not that much more expensive.

f/4.9). Both have 720p video, but the LX5 allows zooming and manual control during videos and has better video IS while the S95 has a less leaky CCD (sometimes purple streaks can show up in video mode for a CCD.
Canon PowerShot S95 | Rated 100% by by Tony-J. (Sep, 2011)
Details like the paint isn't perfect on mine, with bubbles and hair/dust trappings in both of the two S95 I received (which is in stark contrast to Panasonic's impeccable finishes across their lines-and I've owned two LX3 and other lower end Lumix's), scratches on the lens barrel's metallic trims, and the CMOS showing some dead/hot pixels in RAW files (not the LCD display but the image sensor) uncorrected and unmapped (Canon admitted it's faulty and sent a service ticket).

sensor

The 1/2.3 inch, 16 megapixel sensor used in the S8200 produces noise-free images at ISO 160 and 200, with ISO 400 also looking good, although there's some grain at 100% magnification and slight loss of saturation.
Nikon Coolpix S8200 | Rated 90% by by Photography Blog (Oct, 2011)
The S8200 is capable of capturing an impressive 120 or 60 frames per second, but sadly only at VGA and 1 megapixel resolution respectively.
Nikon Coolpix S8200 | Rated 90% by by Photography Blog (Oct, 2011)
As with its predecessor, the S8200's image quality is still only just above average, delivering acceptable results in terms of noise from ISO 100-400, although it becomes all too apparent at ISO 800, with the faster settings of 1600 and especially 3200 not really worth using.
Nikon Coolpix S8200 | Rated 90% by by Photography Blog (Oct, 2011)

screen

The S8200 also offers a high-resolution 3-inch screen, 1080p Full HD movies, 6fps continuous shooting and speedy operation.
Nikon Coolpix S8200 | Rated 90% by by Photography Blog (Oct, 2011)
It has the brightest lcd screen among point&*shot cameras ( I currently own Canon S95, Leica D-Lux).
Nikon Coolpix S8200 | Rated 100% by by DL (Jan, 2012)
ordered the S8200 after reading the reviews about the S8100 hopefully Nikon has made the improvements especially "lens error message"zoom was increased screen is clear and bright.
Nikon Coolpix S8200 | Rated 100% by by dtodj (Sep, 2011)

flash

The new 14x lens dominates the front of the S8200 and has an attractive rounded appearance that helps distinguish it from rival models, as does the neat pop-flash which automatically appears whenever a flash mode is selected.
Nikon Coolpix S8200 | Rated 90% by by Photography Blog (Oct, 2011)
It also has a flash shoe in addition to the pop-up flash, although you can buy a dedicated add-on flash for the S-95 to supplement its pop-up flash The LX-5 is about 25% more expensive than the Canon S95 (and 60% more with the optional viewfinder) and while it would fit in a coat pocket, you can't stuff it into a trouser pocket.
Canon PowerShot S95 | Rated 100% by by Michael-Sandman
With the S95, even if the flash is placed in the same place, it has enough space behind to let you place your finger without interfering with the flash.
Canon PowerShot S95 | Rated 100% by by Davo--davosan (Mar, 2011)

depth

The options are buried deep down in the S95, and I didn't like having to get out the manual every time I took pictures.
Nikon Coolpix S8200 | Rated 100% by by Rosalyn-K.-Taylor--rktaylor (Dec, 2011)
Although very slightly thicker than the S8100, the S8200 is still very slim for a camera with a 14x zoom lens, but note that the camera does measure over 70mm deep when the zoom is fully extended.
Nikon Coolpix S8200 | Rated 90% by by Photography Blog (Oct, 2011)
Althought S95 has small lens and a deep depth of field, you still find the video constantly out of focus when your kids are running around you while u r shooting them.
