Whilst that much is standard, less so is a screen resolution that again betters what one might expect at 921k dots, so visibility is clear with it.

On my laptop the pictures look a bit drab or dull, but on my desk top with a high res monitor the pictures are real vivid and pleasing to the eye.

In terms of image quality we felt the results bettered those from the 12 megapixel P500 we were playing with alongside it.
Coolpix S9100 by TrustedReviews (May, 2011)
The picture quality is excellent and although 12.1 megapixels isn't a whole lot, it is good because the really good sensors can get to each pixel more.

sensor size

Nikon Coolpix S9100
Canon PowerShot SX260 HS
At ISO800 there's a subtle softening of overall detail which has again kept any instance of image noise at bay - but this really is nit picking as viewing the full frame you'd be hard pressed to notice any difference at all between this and the lower settings.
Coolpix S9100 by TrustedReviews (May, 2011)
digital noise is apparent when using high ISO, this is probably due to the small sensor size.

These shots of a white coloured wall were taken at a distance of 1.5m. Forced Off - Wide Angle (25mm).

I prefer to control both wide angle and zoom.

aperture size

Nikon Coolpix S9100
Canon PowerShot SX260 HS
The S9100's maximum lens aperture is a modest f/3.5 though.
Coolpix S9100 by Photography Blog (Apr, 2011)
Aperture value could be set anywhere between f/3.5 & f/8.0, but it also depends on the zoom position (with maximum zoom, aperture value could be set either at f/6.8 or at f/8.).

The long zoom is great, but even with image stabilizing enabled you will need a steady hand for clear shots at higher zoom levels.

Zoom: zoom is very good - 20x zoom.

Overall, this is a very easy camera to use and if you are looking for something that will fit nicely in a handbag, this is definitely the most compact camera I've ever had.
Coolpix S9100 by L.-Schnitzler (Dec, 2011)
I have concluded that for me, a camera that takes 'very good' pictures, that is small and lightweight, is a NECESSITY.

Performance Real world tests of Nikon Coolpix S9100 vs Canon PowerShot SX260 HS

battery life

270 photos
210 photos
The S9100 is powered by a lithium ion rechargeable pack that is rated for 270 shots; this was supported in testing, but keep in mind that using the zoom a lot or the movie and burst-shooting modes will kill battery life faster.
Coolpix S9100 by c|net (Apr, 2011)
After a two week vacation with it overseas as my first real use of it I have to say that I am impressed with the size/weight of the package, the quality of the pictures, the acceptable speed of operation, the battery life, the image stabilization, and the zoom.
PowerShot SX260 HS by SAW (Sep, 2012)

max continuous shooting

It made a big difference for me in burst mode.
Coolpix S9100 by Michael (Mar, 2011)
It is also good for motion, and my dad was surprised it had a burst mode, because my mama got her DSLR camera mainly because of it.

ISO 1600At ISO1600 shadow detail is beginning to take on a speckled appearance - but only if you're really looking closely.

Effective resolution remains at 12.1MP, which strikes us as quite a sensible move given that the SX260 uses a regular 1/2.3in compact-sized sensor.

Yes, it has plenty of other things going on-including a beautiful high-res LCD-but if all you really want is a long lens in a pocketable body with reliable automatic shooting options, the S9100 might be the best option for the money.

The Coolpix's 18x zoom lens works very well, it has greater magnification than the 55-200mm telephoto on my D60.

As many others have stated there are times you want the flexibility of everything in a small package, in fact that pretty much most of the time because very few us would enjoy carrying around all day a 4lb DSLR, or similar video camera, lighting kit, and sound kit.

My old camera wouldn't take a good picture in our house at night even with all the lights on because everything looked so grainy.
