Color balance was very good if clearly 'consumer biased' (more saturated, richer colors), the D80 coping well with highly saturated color in bright light (such as sun lit red flowers).

Another clear improvement over the D5100 is the addition of a 3in, high-resolution, tilt-and-swivel LCD monitor that displays at a resolution of 920k dots a huge upgrade over the 230k-dots offered by the D3100 and D5000.

Cons: price (still near impossible to find one of these for a steal), weight (it feels solid and well constructed, but you pay for that with the weight).

D5100 superior low light excellent image quality and loving it more, I have returned my D3100 and keeping Nikon D5100 instead, using Nikon 35mm 1.8G AF-S ( same 1600 ISO and shutter, Aperture etc., clearly less noise under indoor night low light condition worth every penny IMHO).

Colors were accurate and neutral and the camera's meter did an excellent job of reading the scene and providing an accurate exposure.

Despite the higher-resolution sensor, the D5100 delivers visibly better image quality at all ISO sensitivities than the D5000, although the D5000 has slightly better white balance.

Naturally the D80 can shoot in RAW mode, as well as three different JPEG quality settings, and RAW+JPEG with all three JPEG modes.

We found the D5100’s 11-point phase-detect system to be generally fast enough when shooting through the viewfinder, although it is worth reiterating that because the D5100 lacks an internal AF motor, AF performance is very much determined by the choice of lens attached – in this case the supplied 18-55mm VR kit lens.

I love the LCD status screen on the top of the camera - it's much easier than using the color LCD on the back for basic functions.

Wide-angle lenses become less wide; telephoto lenses become longer (your 70-200 mm is suddenly 105mm to 300mm).

For sports events or nature, the 300 is the minimum, I'd say.

video

Paired with an appropriate lens, the D80's auto mode catches a flurry of high-speed, action photos of our toddler.
Nikon D80 | Rated 80% by by FiveAgainst1 (Apr, 2008)
Where the D5100 shines is decent still shots but a tad better video quality if your using the right lens, as it will shoot 1080p/24p/30p where the D7000 shoots only 1080p/24p, and this is where the articulating upgraded LCD comes into play, makes filming with this camera a tad more enjoyable and more flexible.

I pair my d5100 with a 55-200mm Nikkor AF VR lens, and with a stabilization rig, quality boom mic, and final cut pro x editing, im able to turn out some stunning and professional video.
Nikon D5100 | Rated 100% by by Diane-H

sensor

Having removed the camera's image processing from the equation is very revealing, there really is no difference in the underlying images, both ten megapixel sensors (CCD in the D80 and CMOS in the EOS 400D) capturing the same levels of detail.
Nikon D80 | by DPReview (Sep, 2006)
As you can see the D80's chroma-biased noise reduction keeps the visibility of the more digital-looking chroma noise to a minimum, as low at ISO 1600 as the EOS 400D at ISO 800.
Nikon D80 | by DPReview (Sep, 2006)
Indeed despite several passes up and down the crops (and examining the rest of the image) I was unable to identify anything in the D80 image which wasn't resolved just as well as the eight megapixel 350D (there really is no useful difference between 8 and 10 megapixels).
Nikon D80 | by DPReview (Sep, 2006)

landscape

I still do an awful lot of landscape photography, as well as sunrise and sunset images, and the D5100 executes exceedingly well with both the 105 and 300.

Thirdly, I was recommended the Nikon D80 by my brother who owns one, I have seen his pictures of some of his landscape and nature shots and they where awesome, so on a whim i paid the extra and got the D80.

I HAVED OWNED THIS FINE NIKON 10 MEG CAMERA FOR A YEAR, AND AFTER LOOKING AT THE SPECS BETWEEN THE D200 AND THE D80 ....THE DIFFERENCES ARE VERY SMALL..........THE D80 AND THE D200 ARE ALMOST IDENTICALTHE SHOTS I HAVE TAKEN BOTH NATURE, LANDSCAPES AND PEOPLE HAVE BEEN BREATHTAKING.

I've shot nature and architectural-type photos with the D80 and the Tamron 70-300mm and was very pleasantly surprised at the results.

The D80 has a high enough resolution to make good sized prints.
Nikon D80 | Rated 80% by by R.-P.-Poletti--Just-a-guy (Jun, 2007)
Shooters of wildlife, for example, will appreciate the additional resolution of the D80, as it is often necessary to photograph wildlife at a distance and then crop the image to cause the subject to dominate the frame.
Nikon D80 | Rated 100% by by Roger-J.-Buffington

image stabilization

I was extremely happy with my purchase and excited about the VR (Vibration Reduction) lens, which was the deciding factor for my choice, until I realized that the D5100 18-55 VR Kit did not included a VR lens at all.
Nikon D5100 | Rated 40% by by Nikon-VR-less (Jul, 2011)
