by DPReview (Oct, 2008)That said, ISO 6400 is extremely challenging for a camera with an APS-C sized sensor so even these noisy, smudgy, low-contrast results are amongst the better we've seen.
Rated 73% by by DPReview (Jul, 2012)Color rendition, tonality sharpness and detail are as good as identical.
Conclusion Which is better for you?
Features Key features of the Nikon D90 compared to the D3200
MP12.2
APS-C
Rated 100% by by André-John--Hope-For-The-Best--Prepare-For-The-Worst--Expect-NothingThe battery life is amazing, with over 800 shots per charge.
24.1 MP
APS-C
Rated 73% by by DPReview (Jul, 2012)Converting high ISO raw files and applying a customized noise reduction mix can get you better results than the out-of-camera JPEGs, as we have demonstrated in the image quality sections of this review.
megapixels
| 0 MP | 24.1 MP | 30 MP |
Nikon D90 by Paul-Christensen (Apr, 2010)The quality of the camera is the top of the line with 12.3 megapixels the quality of the pictures are there also.
D3200 by mad-G.I. (Mar, 2013)Even older camera's, in the single digit mega pixel range, take equally good photos, when you print to normal size frames, so don't get excited about the megapixels, because in the end, they just eat up hard drive space, with no real gain.
sensor size
Nikon D90 by DPReview (Oct, 2008)The D90 viewfinder is amongst the best you'll find on any APS-C camera and it sits above the highest-resolution screen we've yet seen on a camera of this class.
D3200 by TrustedReviews (Jun, 2012)While that ticks most of the boxes of what can be expected from an entry-level DSLR, the headline-grabbing feature of the D3200 is undoubtedly its 24.2MP APS-C CMOS sensor.
viewfinder size
Nikon D90 by M.-Kato--MK (Apr, 2010)When the Nikon D90 was announced, it seemed to have the features that I wanted, such as a good prism viewfinder and LCD panel, and be close to the size and price I could seriously consider.
D3200 by DPReview (Jul, 2012)In some ways it is a fairly 'old-fashioned' DSLR, but it is a solid performer in almost all areas and a good entry-level choice for those who prefer to frame their images through an optical viewfinder.
body size
132 x 103 x 77 mm
125 x 96 x 77 mm
D3200 by Photography Blog (Jun, 2012)The 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6 VR kit lens that Nikon supplied feels fairly well-balanced - if a tad front-heavy - on the Nikon D3200 and it fits into place with a reassuring mechanical click.
focus points
| 0 | 11 | 20 |
Nikon D90 by Digby-In-FL (Mar, 2009)The D90 has many more choices/features when shooting pics: Multiple exposure, bulb, more focus points, live view.
D3200 by c|net (Jun, 2012)But I also hate the tiny focus points which only illuminate (and briefly) when you half-press the shutter.
Performance Real world tests of Nikon D90 vs D3200
DxOMark image quality
Nikon D90 by Mark-C. (Aug, 2010)I have captured lots of images with this camera and its been great from its handling to the high quality low light abilities to its quick 4.5fps speed.
D3200 by CKE (Jul, 2012)Image Quality - Absolutely top-notch - the Nikon D3200 takes super crisp photos with excellent color representation.
DxOMark low light performance
Nikon D90 by John-F.-Gabel (Apr, 2009)We feel the quality of the pictures are great and love the fact that it takes very good low light pictures.
D3200 by Gablud (Oct, 2012)I have been using this camera for over 2 weeks now and I am more than satisfied with the quality of the images even in low light condition.
shutter lag
| 0 ms | 208 ms | 300 ms |
Nikon D90 by Gurmeet-Singh (Dec, 2009)It has given us more reasons to take picture and it excellent response time is a pleasure to capture real moments.
D3200 by Dolly (Feb, 2013)One thing that has frustrated me in the past with other cameras has been the slow response time between pushing the shutter button to the picture actually being taken.
continuous shooting
battery life
850 photos
540 photos
Nikon D90 by Alan-G.And since the VR system remains off until you half-press the shutter (it activates only when you're ready to take the shot, not while you're focusing) you save on battery life as well.
D3200 by Deborah-Roslan--pyrola (Dec, 2012)Good battery life, light weight are the pros, camera clock is somewhat inaccurate and the memory card was a little hot to remove after I shot a 300+ images at a wedding are the cons.

iso
Nikon D90 | Rated 100% by by Michael-Cohen--world-music-maven (Nov, 2008)The live view & video is a nice plus, but the best thing about the D90 is the excellent picture quality at high ISO settings.
Nikon D90 | Rated 100% by by Shutterbug (Dec, 2008)I did controlled tests using my 55-200mm VR lens at 55mm (f/4) and looked at ISO sharpness and color on the D40 and D90.
Nikon D90 | Rated 90% by by TrustedReviews (May, 2011)200 ISO is the D90's lowest normal sensitivity setting, and 3200 ISO the highest, although it can shoot as low as100 ISO and as high as 6400 in extended ISO mode.
sensor
Nikon D90 | Rated 90% by by TrustedReviews (May, 2011)In an effort to appeal to a wide audience, the D90 features an extensive selection of in-camera retouching options, including D-lighting, red-eye correction, cropping rotating and re-sizing, filter effects, colour balance, multi-image composites and Raw processing options, among others.
Nikon D90 | Rated 100% by by M.-Kato--MK (Apr, 2010)I later switched to the 18-105mm lens and put on a Nikon SB-600 flash (I ultimately decided to get a new flash to go with the D90 rather than try to use one of my old flashes) to take the post-ceremony photos (at ISO 200) of my son with family and friends.
Nikon D90 | Rated 100% by by M.-Kaainoa--Kekailoa (May, 2009)Most of these features are enhanced for the D90, especially the CMOS censor (instead of CCD), color depth, movie mode, battery life, higher res screen, controls, high ISO performance and censor dust removal (to name a few).
focus
Nikon D90 | Rated 100% by by K.-Kraft--kev (Dec, 2008)So if you are really pondering which one to get, I say for most purposes the D90 is a year newer, has video, the same picture quality and low light capability (except for the AF of the D300, which focuses a bit faster in lowlight).
Nikon D90 | Rated 100% by by K.-Rogers (Nov, 2008)Obviously the 300 is a slightly more professional camera with a better frame, faster shutter, better autofocus, etc., but the D90 is so close to it and comes with a slightly better sensor and is $500 cheaper.
Nikon D90 | Rated 100% by by B.-Bicoy--bicoyI have learned more about how to alter the depth of focus, the crispness of live action, and to use out of focus backgrounds to complement what is in the foreground - all by playing with the Nikon D90's aperture settings, shutter speeds and the like.
image quality
Nikon D90 | Rated 100% by by Jason (Dec, 2009)So I take the second D90 with me to work, charge the battery, put a lens on, and I went to a dark room and took about 10-15 underexposed shots.
Nikon D90 | Rated 100% by by J.-Christensen--Eddie-Williams (Feb, 2009)For example, I was at the 2009 Westminster Dog Show last night, and I took some shots with the D90 and the 18-200 Nikon lens using only the light in Madison Square Garden (no flash).
Nikon D90 | Rated 100% by by D.-Smith--Dazzler (Jan, 2010)Ok, so onto the most important thing; picture quality, outstanding is the only word that can be said, the colors are natural and vibrant in normal use, but with the vast array of tweaks that the D90 has, it can make any shooting condition look good.
video
Nikon D90 | Rated 80% by by Gear-Head--photo-geek (Jan, 2010)At the end of the day, pretty much in line with what I expected, D90 excells in specialized usages I mentioned above, but GH1 will continue to serve as general purpose/travel kit thanks to it portability, articulated display, video capabilities and reasonable stills quality.
Nikon D90 | Rated 100% by by David-C.-Smith--Cameron (May, 2010)The video quality is great on the D90, but the focus is a HUGE problem.
Nikon D90 | Rated 100% by by B.-Edwards (Nov, 2008)video is pretty poor, unless you are doing studio or very controlled shoots, and you REALLY know what you are doing (I have seen some amazing videos using certain lenses with the D90 video, but for the casual videographer, I think you will get much MUCH worse results).
Competition What else you should consider
| | 1 | Nikon D7000 OK benchmarked shot to shot times |
| | 2 | Sony SLT A57 Most detailed video recording mode |
| | 3 | Nikon D5100 4-way tie: Supports HDR |
| | 4 | Canon EOS 60D Most shots per battery charge |
| | 5 | Nikon D3100 Smallest |
| | 6 | Nikon D5200 Best image quality as rated by DXOMark |
| | 7 | Canon EOS 600D 3-way tie: Highest resolution screen |
