You cannot find a more simple and feature rich camera with PLENTY of quality mega pixels than this one (10 MegaPixels is enough) at such a low price.
XZ-1 by Thomas--NikonD7000DSLRorg (Nov, 2012)
The Nikon P310 features a 16 megapixel BSI CMOS sensor, full manual controls, 1080p HD video recording, a fast maximum aperture of f/1.8, a high-resolution LCD screen and 5fps burst shooting.

sensor size

Olympus XZ-1
Nikon Coolpix P310
but the size of the sensor in relation to the aperture capability of the lens also allows for some of the nicest bokeh you'll find in a compact.
XZ-1 by Zachary-Wagner (Apr, 2011)
f/4.9. Also worth noting is the fact that because of the small sensor size (It's 1/2.3 inch type), even when wide open, the lens doesn't deliver any significant shallow depth-of-field benefit (an f/4.9 aperture with a sensor this small is equivalent in depth of field terms to f/36.8 in full-frame 135mm terms).
Coolpix P310 by DPReview (Jun, 2012)

wide angle lens

Olympus XZ-1
Nikon Coolpix P310
f/2.5. At 28mm it offers a wide angle view, and is extremely sharp from corner to corner even at maximum aperture and wide angle.
XZ-1 by Anthony-Pantliano--The-Photo-Guy
I wanted a camera to do group photos and the wide angle on this is nice.

Olympus XZ-1

The XZ-1 has filled its shoes admirably, letting me take low light photos without flash that amaze my friends due to its incredibly fast lens.
XZ-1 by HiPo-Steve
Still, dual controls for setting the aperture and shutter speed is very rare on any compact, so kudos to Nikon for including both on the P310.

I wanted a decent zoom range, a view screen good enough to show if the picture focus AND exposure were right following the shot, ability to shoot full manual when needed, macro lens ability and a decently low-lag shutter release.
XZ-1 by CI (Mar, 2012)
Viewed from the perspective of the average point-and-shoot upgrader though, the P310 is a small, pocketable camera with improved ergonomics, that offers full manual control over exposure and gives decent if not exceptional image quality in a wide variety of shooting conditions.

And although the price tage is pretty steep for a p & s, the proof is in the pictures and wide range of shots you can accomplish with this small camera.

XZ-1 by Radio-Man--yarns13 (Feb, 2011)
Like the P510, its long-zoom sibling and some Samsung compact cameras, the P310's 230-shot (CIPA rated) battery is charged in-camera with its USB AC adapter; the battery can also be charged via a computer's USB port.
Coolpix P310 by DPReview (Jun, 2012)

max continuous shooting

Not concerned overly with burst rate since I'll use my D300 if I need to (ditto for the XA vs. F100 comparison).
XZ-1 by Jay-A.-Frogel (Feb, 2011)
The headline continuous shooting speed is 6fps – however, if you select this frame rate you’ll only be able to capture five frames at full resolution, making it not entirely useful.

And, while we've rarely been impressed by digital stabilization for stills, the reduced resolution of movies gives greater scope for it working.

Like the P300, the P310 offers a fast, f/1.8 lens at wide-angle but is now built around a 16 megapixel sensor, offers a higher maximum ISO by adding a Hi 1 equivalent to 6400, is outfitted with a new function (Fn) button, 3D capture, interval shooting and a pre-shooting cache continuous mode along with a few other minor changes.

The camera ticks all the boxes that any experienced photographer is looking for - “sensible” pixel count, a very fast lens, raw file support, a reliable multi-point AF system and a well implemented manual exposure mode complete with an optional live histogram.

Just like its very similar predecessor, the Nikon Coolpix P310 is a good compact camera for users looking for high-resolution images, full HD video and a degree of creative control.

Further adding to the impression that this is a serious proposition is the Olympus XZ-1's rugged-feeling build, which suggests a compacted DSLR or, more closely still, a smaller and slimmer Digital Pen; a feeling augmented by the XZ-1's 275g weight and proportions of 110.6mm x 64.8mm x 42.3mm.

The zoom itself covers a 35mm equivalent focal range of 24-100mm, although the main draw is really its fast maximum aperture.

I prefer a small wrist strap to the neck strap that came with the camera - the wrist strap fits more easily in the small belt pouch I use to carry the camera and makes it much quicker to grab it and shoot.

The pictures in JPEG are excellent, and RAW delivers as well, but high ISO does delivers very noisy pics.

The new Olympus XZ-1 is a 10-megapixel premium compact camera featuring an ultra-bright 28-112mm equivalent f/1.8-2.5 zoom lens, a high-resolution 3-inch OLED screen and a 1/1.63 inch CCD imager with sensor-shift image stabilisation.

Olympus LC-63A Lens Cap for XZ-1 Digital Camera- (ADDED) RAW version of the photo looks pretty dull comparing to JPEG.
Olympus XZ-1 | Rated 100% by by D.-Turkmen (Apr, 2011)
The XZ-1's JPEG output doesn't contain quite the fine detail that can be seen in the converted Raw files.

Of course it's worth remembering that the XZ-1 has the brightest zoom lens on any current compact camera, meaning you can generally keep the ISOs down in many situations.

This is an excellent setup for most things, but occasionally I find I want a little telephoto or a wider angle and the xz-1 is an excellent backup.
Olympus XZ-1 | Rated 100% by by Marvin-C.-Latimer--Mel-sbells (Jul, 2011)
The Olympus XZ-1 has a sensor-shift image stabilisation mechanism, which allows you to take sharp photos at shutter speeds that are critically slow for the focal length used.
Olympus XZ-1 | Rated 90% by by Photography Blog (Feb, 2011)

size

Similar in both size and weight to the Panasonic Lumix DMC-LX5, the XZ-1 is a fairly slim yet substantial affair made of a combination of metal and plastics.

However, on the premise that the best camera is the one with you, and with the knowledge that I don't like lugging around a heavy body and a lot of lenses, but also want something that feels steady in my hands, I turned to the Olympus xz-1.

You can easily carry the P310 around in a trouser or shirt pocket, as it measures 103.0 x 58.3 x 32.0 mm and weighs less than 200g with the battery and memory card fitted.

these 2 camera's P510 & P310 should have eveything what the P7700 got inside of it the big sensor 1/1.8 size the top of the line processer all the good stuff u know.
Nikon Coolpix P310 | Rated 80% by by chad
1/2.3 is the size of it ok what i really dont understand why does nikon put the same processer and sensor in the P510&P310 as every outher coolpix this is the P series the top of the line in coolpix series you are charging us premium price for these cameras but not putting in premium stuff why nikon why?
Nikon Coolpix P310 | Rated 80% by by chad
Also note that because of the smaller 1/2.3" sensor, the size employed by the vast majority of compacts, the P310 doesn't blur the background as much as the Olympus XZ-1 at the same aperture of F/1.8, although it does deliver good results for a "regular" compact.

With the release of what is arguably its first 'high performance' pocket compact in the 10-megapixel, 4x optical zoom XZ-1, Olympus is trying to target - and moreover enthuse - two distinct groups of photographer.
Olympus XZ-1 | Rated 80% by by TrustedReviews (Nov, 2011)
video/audio. There are minor P310 "improvements" such as a "better" stability system (not needed or noticed), 16 megapixels up from 12 megapixels (a step backward - who needs large posters with noise)?
Nikon Coolpix P310 | Rated 60% by by Gladius (Apr, 2012)
The P310 is almost as good but has too many megapixels (i.e., more megapixels and the same size sensor - a typically small P. &S 1/2.3 = more noise + the need to use a lower ISO) - 16 megapixels vs 12 megapixels.
