And bear in mind we're talking vastly different resolutions - my FZ10 was 4.0 megapixels, while everything today is 12.
Lumix DMC-FZ48 by J.-Kendall (Dec, 2011)
With the 16 megapixel capability, you still get great pictures even when you have to crop heavily.

sensor size

Panasonic Lumix DMC-FZ48
Nikon Coolpix P510
You can only view the results on a 3D TV (the FZ48 records standard MPO files), and although it isn't as effective as images taken with Panasonic's 3D Micro Four Thirds lens or the Fujifilm 3D W3, for example, it does create quite a convincing effect which particularly suits subjects that are close-up to the camera.
Lumix DMC-FZ48 by Photography Blog (Aug, 2011)
I knew that a super zoom would have a small sensor, it had to, because of the size of the lens.
Coolpix P510 by Crosswire--Crosswire (May, 2012)

wide angle lens

Panasonic Lumix DMC-FZ48
Nikon Coolpix P510
With wide angle at 25mm you can get everybody in your photo on group shots, don't need to step back or squeeze everybody together like you do with many point and shoots.
Lumix DMC-FZ48 by Life-is-Good (Oct, 2012)
A DSLR would provide more options for wide angle shots, but this camera is perfect for me.

It's the camera you have with you, a very practical bring along camera, light-weight with decent quality, unless you're a real purist.
Lumix DMC-FZ48 by Randall-Allen--Sierra-Biker (Nov, 2012)
And the lens is really the bulk of the weight, which makes the rest of the body feel lightweight and cheaply constructed.

shutter lag

Panasonic Lumix DMC-FZ48
Nikon Coolpix P510
Shutter lag is minimal (especially when you use the "shutter priority" setting), the camera focuses quickly, and pictures of my kids moving/running/jumping are not blurry. The image stabilizer is excellent. The camera is ready to use right out of the box, but there are.
Lumix DMC-FZ48 by AmazonReader (Dec, 2011)
Shutter lag, lack of a rapid fire sports quick setting, and a few other settings have been a disappointment.

Battery life is great for taking photos.
Lumix DMC-FZ48 by R.-Foster (May, 2012)
Overall, this camera is very fun to use, and it's weakest points are bareable and are most regarding to battery life.
Coolpix P510 by Edward (Mar, 2012)

max continuous shooting

In the full resolution burst mode, you can get about 7 shots in 2 seconds.
Lumix DMC-FZ48 by R.-Fieser (Dec, 2011)
The P510's maximum framerate of 7 frames per second is unlikely to get much use, but it's nice to have, although the maximum 5 frames per burst greatly limits its usefulness.

Successor to the year-old FZ45 model, the bridge-style Panasonic FZ48 compact also offers a 3-inch, 460K-pixel LCD screen, 1080p Full HD movie recording in AVCHD format at 25fps, Venus Engine FHD processing engine, Intelligent Resolution technology, 3.7fps burst shooting, 3D stills, a range of creative effects and a built-in stereo microphone.

The Nikon Coolpix P510 may not produce the best photos at higher ISO speeds or focus quickly enough for fast-moving subjects, but it's a lot more portable and convenient than an SLR with a bag full of lenses and also doubles up as an effective video camera thanks to its excellent movie mode, making it worthy of our Highly Recommended award.

As for movie quality, its AVCHD clips are sharp with good exposure and color and some of the smoothest motion I've seen from a point-and-shoot.

If a typical day of shooting will include the high-speed burst modes and movie capture and using the 3-inch LCD and the zoom a lot, you'll want a backup battery.

I have also been satisfied with its video capabilities, and pleased with the camera's ability to take photo shots as well when the video is on.

It has lots of quick modes for photos and the HD video looks great.

Never-the-less, while the ASA100 is better, I would have been quite satisfied with the ASA400 if that's all I could get!

I was amazed at how powerful the 42:1 optical zoom is and is great on those far away shots.

I work in the real estate business and I needed a camera that I could use for listing pictures of properties in addition to personal family activities with my kids.

I took shots of birds in our backyard utilizing the the zoom at full range.

iso

So if you're taking shots of a child indoors, the DMC-FZ48 automatically raises the ISO and in turn the shutter speed to avoid blurring the child's movement.
Panasonic Lumix DMC-FZ48 | Rated 80% by by Photography Blog (Aug, 2011)
Like most point-and-shoots the FZ47 does well up to ISO 200, so the more light you give it, the better your photos.
Panasonic Lumix DMC-FZ48 | Rated 78% by by c|net (Dec, 2011)
Despite the more sensible megapixel count, though, the FZ48 still suffers from poor image quality at higher ISO speeds.

sensor

Key highlights of the FZ48 / FZ47 include a 24x zoom, higher-resolution 3 inch LCD, full 1080i HD movies, faster auto-focusing and burst shooting, and a 12 megapixel CCD sensor.
Panasonic Lumix DMC-FZ48 | Rated 80% by by Photography Blog (Aug, 2011)
The 1/2.33 inch, 12 megapixel CCD sensor used in the Panasonic Lumix DMC-FZ48 produces noise-free images at ISO 100-200, with limited noise and colour desaturation starting to appear at ISO 400.
Panasonic Lumix DMC-FZ48 | Rated 80% by by Photography Blog (Aug, 2011)
Panasonic have also seen fit to quietly drop RAW format support from the FZ48, again something that will drive buyers either to the more expensive FZ100 or dare we say it a rival model.
