It's much much faster (what's the point of having a camera if you miss the shot because the camera doesn't react in time), the low light ability is far superior, the macro is wonderful, it can zoom while recording video, and the battery life is excellent.

My bottom line advice is your personal priorities will determine which camera fits you best but please still consider the whole package: size, weight, ergonomics, menu system, AF lag times, RAW write times, battery life, possible accessories, etc..

The level of detail is outstanding, even though the 90mm-equivalent focal length doesn't zoom in quite as far as most other compacts.

The quality of the photos is slightly lower than that of top-of-the-line 2.1 megapixel cameras (e.g., the PowerShot S10.

First off, I don't think it's fair to compare the s100 to DSLRs, APS-C, Four Thirds cameras.

The LX-5 is between the S and G in size, but it is a very different camera.24mm wide angle....longer zoom range than the S series.
Lumix DMC-LX5 by James-P.-Garin (Feb, 2011)
* 24mm wide-angle is very useful for indoor photography.

Rather than posting more images showing how sharp the lens is (and it is a beautiful, fast lens), I'm intentionally uploading photos taken in low light-ISO up to 1600, handheld as slow as 1/4 second-with wedding photography, it's not just about razor sharpness (at least it wasn't with this couple-they loved the pictures).

The function ring around the lens is a particularly effective control point, offering quick access to controls like shutter speed, aperture and ISO.

As a Canon user, I immediately found the LX5 controls to be fully intuitive, although I must admit I'm still learning ALL of the menu controls as I crave manual control and creative flexibility!

Image quality is excellent, with a perfectly usable ISO range of 80-1600 and fast f/2.0 maximum aperture, albeit only at the wide-angle lens setting, making the S100 very well-suited to low-light, hand-held photography.

The F2.0 Leica lens is outstanding for resolution and color clarity - I've done enlargements to poster size and still haven't reached the limits of the lens/camera combo.

RAW - i am not a professional and RAW has little appeal to me other than post-production manipulation, but if you want, this shoots in RAW ... personally, i find that JPEGs frequently do better in avoiding colour moire in fine resolution.

If you cant take your SLR everywhere, go get a lumix LX5, it is the perfect tool for the photographer that needs to travel light everyday but cant compromise image quality.

Four reasons for ordering the LX5 were: (1) the new Canon Powershot S100 was completely out-of-stock despite me waiting over 4 weeks prior to a vacation trip (Yes, Canon was out-of-stock right before Christmas).

I have a Canon DSLR (not 5D2 level) which I basically use for shooting portrait, and I always use my P&S for shooting landscape, I haven't see much difference when aperture is small and ISO is set to low, so I keep using P&S for landscape, unfortunately, my IXUS 60 died recentlySo I decided to continue my tradition since carrying DSLR with landscape lens is just not comfortable, and my choice is between LX5 and S95.
Panasonic Lumix DMC-LX5 | Rated 80% by by Jianjing-Zhang--Buffalo
With a high street price of £399.99 the LX5 may seem expensive, but it is substantially cheaper than any of its main rivals except one.

I shot a few times with a film Leica M5 and that was super sharp too, like the LX5.
Panasonic Lumix DMC-LX5 | Rated 100% by by Design49er (Jun, 2011)
We've already seen the Lumix GF1, which shares many design features with the LX3 but adds a larger Four-Thirds sensor and interchangeable lenses, but for an advanced fixed-lens compact there just aren't that many ways to significantly improve on the design and specification of the LX3, which is probably why it's taken two years for the LX5 to appear.
Panasonic Lumix DMC-LX5 | Rated 90% by by TrustedReviews (May, 2011)
For alternatives, I would urge people to look into the Panasonic LX5 or the Fuji X10.

lens

My reasons for buying this camera are as follows; I wanted a pocket-friendly camera to use as my main camera (not just a second camera) with good low-light capability, a wide angle lens and the auto focus and optical zoom in the HD video mode, The LX5 with the large sensor (large for a pocket-friendly camera), the fast f/2 lens (at the wide angle setting), and the excellent image stabilization meets my requirements.
Panasonic Lumix DMC-LX5 | Rated 100% by by Lowell (Dec, 2010)
Although I liked the pocket ability of the S95, I chose the LX5 because of the excellent build quality, wide angle bright Leica lens and the optical zoom.
Panasonic Lumix DMC-LX5 | Rated 100% by by Sameh-Abdulrhim (Dec, 2011)
The LX5 has a new lens with 3.8x zoom, equivalent to 24-90mm, but this hasn't meant sacrificing the fast maximum aperture, which is now f/2 – f/3..
