Rated 80% by by Mr-ConsumerThen you turn on the camera and the quality of the screen tells you that you are closer to feel very happy with your purchase until you take your first pictures.... And you are like... where is all the big improvement in picture quality?? Better zoom and better video YES.
Rated 78% by by c|net (Dec, 2011)But to get the best photo quality you have to shoot in the automatic modes, which runs counter to the idea of an enthusiast camera, and yet even in auto it's too complicated to recommend to snapshooters who just want better photo quality.
Conclusion Which is better for you?
Features Key features of the Panasonic Lumix DMC-LX5 compared to the Fujifilm Finepix X10
MP10
1/1.6"
Rated 100% by by James-P.-Garin (Feb, 2011)The LX-5 is between the S and G in size, but it is a very different camera.24mm wide angle....longer zoom range than the S series.
12 MP
2/3"
Rated 76% by by DPReview (Jul, 2012)The output is distinctly low resolution, with image quality that is better suited for viewing on the web, rather than printing or pixel peeping.
megapixels
| 0 MP | 12 MP | 20 MP |
Lumix DMC-LX5 by TrustedReviews (May, 2011)File size 4.4MB The level of detail is outstanding, even though the 90mm-equivalent focal length doesn't zoom in quite as far as most other compacts.
Finepix X10 by Acoustica (Jan, 2012)There still seems to be confusion about whether in RAW, or at least when in RAW, you are actually getting a 12 megapixel image or a 6 megapixel one.
sensor size
Lumix DMC-LX5 by Jaganath (Dec, 2011)Pictures are awesome and almost up there with quality with micro four thirds.
Finepix X10 by DPReview (Jul, 2012)While the X10's AF system focusing speed is roughly on par with compact camera competitors like the Panasonic LX5, it lags behind the performance of the best contrast-detect systems we've seen, like those in the current crop of Micro Four Thirds cameras, for instance.
wide angle lens
Lumix DMC-LX5 by Kebs (Jun, 2011)Wide-angle is fantastic - After using Tamron 28-75 for so many years, I have found a whole new dimension in wide-angle photo-framing using LX5.
Finepix X10 by George-SherwinPersonally, I loved the smoother, less resistant original lens, but can only assume that Fuji bowed to the handful of whiners who complained that it was too easy to turn it off when rotating to the Wide Angle position.... really.
aperture size
Lumix DMC-LX5 by John-CosenzaRather than posting more images showing how sharp the lens is (and it is a beautiful, fast lens), I'm intentionally uploading photos taken in low light-ISO up to 1600, handheld as slow as 1/4 second-with wedding photography, it's not just about razor sharpness (at least it wasn't with this couple-they loved the pictures).
Finepix X10 by Tim-Kimzey--fstop (Sep, 2012)The good thing is that it is FAST f/2 to f/2.8-thats much better than most small P/S's and probably the MAIN REASON i bought this camera.
zoom range
| 0x | 4x | 4x |
Lumix DMC-LX5 by S.-Duford (Jan, 2011)I love the 24mm f/2.8 Leica lens, the image stabilization, the RAW capability, the full manual control, and the multiple-screen formats.
Finepix X10 by MeridianX (Nov, 2011)Bottom line is the X10 is better built, resolves detail better, is cleaner at higher ISO settings, manual zoom, focuses much faster, great skin tones and has a very good viewfinder.
body size
110 x 66 x 43 mm
117 x 70 x 57 mm
Lumix DMC-LX5 by J.-Wang (Oct, 2010)These pro-compact cameras have the best overall design that offers the widest range of application, versatility, and user-friendliness.
Finepix X10 by georgehd--georgehd (Dec, 2011)For anyone who is used to using an SLR, this is an excellent backup or small camera to carry when you do not want to carry a larger SLR.
Performance Real world tests of Panasonic Lumix DMC-LX5 vs Fujifilm Finepix X10
battery life
400 photos
300 photos
Lumix DMC-LX5 by Soured-Customer--Soured-Customer (Dec, 2010)It's much much faster (what's the point of having a camera if you miss the shot because the camera doesn't react in time), the low light ability is far superior, the macro is wonderful, it can zoom while recording video, and the battery life is excellent.
Finepix X10 by DPReview (Jul, 2012)We don't really see the point of using the Continuous IS mode for either stills or video, particularly since it taxes the X10's already short battery life.
max continuous shooting
Lumix DMC-LX5 by rd-in-sf (Sep, 2010)On the LX-5, I can only shoot 3 shots on a burst and then I have to wait until it finishes before I shoot again.
Finepix X10 by c|net (Dec, 2011)Its burst shooting sounds fast, but it's pretty limited: 7.5fps for one second.
DxOMark low light performance
Lumix DMC-LX5 by Defiant10k (Jun, 2011)Applying a small amount of Noise Reduction in Lightroom brings the quality of low light pictures up quite easily.
Finepix X10 by Jay-Gatsby (Aug, 2012)I am extremely impressed with the X10, the images are sharp even in low light without flash, colors are vibrant and with it's 2.0-2.8 lens, you can take multi shots very quickly.

lens
Panasonic Lumix DMC-LX5 | Rated 100% by by Lowell (Dec, 2010)My reasons for buying this camera are as follows; I wanted a pocket-friendly camera to use as my main camera (not just a second camera) with good low-light capability, a wide angle lens and the auto focus and optical zoom in the HD video mode, The LX5 with the large sensor (large for a pocket-friendly camera), the fast f/2 lens (at the wide angle setting), and the excellent image stabilization meets my requirements.
Panasonic Lumix DMC-LX5 | Rated 100% by by Sameh-Abdulrhim (Dec, 2011)Although I liked the pocket ability of the S95, I chose the LX5 because of the excellent build quality, wide angle bright Leica lens and the optical zoom.
Panasonic Lumix DMC-LX5 | Rated 80% by by Erik (Feb, 2011)Zoom function is OK but it would be nice if zoom could be more than the 3,8 times - again Panasonic makes x10 zoom in cheaper models.
sensor
Panasonic Lumix DMC-LX5 | Rated 100% by by Gadgester--No-Time--No-Money (Dec, 2011)Now, do NOT expect this to have the same performance as a DSLR or even a Four Thirds camera, because the LX5 still uses a compact, 1/1.63" CCD sensor, which cannot match the light and color sensitivity of a DSLR sensor that is larger - the LX5's sensor is about 45 mm^2 in area whereas a Four Thirds sensor is 225 mm^2 in area and, say, the Nikon APS-C sensor in DSLR's from Nikon, Pentax and Sony measure 370 mm^2 in area.
Panasonic Lumix DMC-LX5 | Rated 100% by by kandoro (Apr, 2011)f/8..Especially on the edges...While the DSLR may still have a stronger signal/noise ratio because of the larger pixels, it's the pixel pitch of the LX5 sensor that tips the scales in it's favor for resolution...Panasonic has really improved their noise alogrithyms as in most cases I'm not afraid to shoot at ISO 1600 for prints up to 11x14"...The shutter lag is non existent and even in Raw/jpg with the review off you can shoot one shot after another with approx.
Panasonic Lumix DMC-LX5 | Rated 80% by by aethelraed (Dec, 2010)That being said, the Panasonic can be tweaked to produce decent jpegs, especially at lower iso settings, and after buying the LX5 and its LVF 1 eyelevel viewfinder for $550 here at Amazon, I still had $250 of the $800 I would have paid for the Leica to buy the $299 Adobe Lightroom software included with the latter.
zoom
Panasonic Lumix DMC-LX5 | Rated 100% by by David-J.-Peebler--DJPeebz (Nov, 2010)As a Canon user, I immediately found the LX5 controls to be fully intuitive, although I must admit I'm still learning ALL of the menu controls as I crave manual control and creative flexibility!
Panasonic Lumix DMC-LX5 | Rated 100% by by Kiwi (Oct, 2010)I got the LX5 because I am traveling extensively and wanted something versatile, a camera that could be completely automatic, or totally manual, compact, flash, good zoom (90 mm), and fast shutter speed.
Panasonic Lumix DMC-LX5 | Rated 80% by by hiker (Feb, 2011)I thought I would miss the 12x zoom of the ZS1 but the LX5's 3.8x zoom seems to be adequate and I haven't missed the 12x zoom of the ZS1.
size
Panasonic Lumix DMC-LX5 | Rated 100% by by Robert-Speziale--bob_spez (Apr, 2012)A year later this Lumix LX5 seems to me to be much more camera, at about 1/4 the price and 1/4 the size and weight as the Sony DSLR I was going to buy.
Panasonic Lumix DMC-LX5 | Rated 100% by by L.-Farwell (Jan, 2011)Panasonic Lumix DMC-LX5 camera - ReviewOn trips, there have been times when I've left my SLR camera at home because of its weight and size.
Panasonic Lumix DMC-LX5 | Rated 90% by by Photography Blog (Sep, 2010)The Panasonic Lumix DMC-LX5 is the long-awaited successor to the ahead-of-its-time LX3, a compact camera that hit the sweet spot for photographers looking for a pocketable alternative to their DSLR.
quality
Panasonic Lumix DMC-LX5 | Rated 100% by by kandoro (Apr, 2011)Because the super sharp lens and better signal/noise ratio with the larger sensor the 720P video from the LX5 is actually superior to the 1080i video from my FZ100.
Panasonic Lumix DMC-LX5 | Rated 100% by by Saab-93--Saab-93 (Dec, 2010)Very nice finishing, the Lumix LX5 takes way better pictures than my Canon S90, and the video quality is surprisingly clear.
Panasonic Lumix DMC-LX5 | Rated 80% by by Jeff-AskiI had returned the LX5 because I wanted a smaller camera with top of the line video quality, but after going through many P&S over the course of 2011: Canon S95, S100, 300HS, 100HS, Sony HX9V, Olympus XZ-1, Fujifilm XP20, W3 - I realized the error of my ways.
Competition What else you should consider

| | 2 | Pentax K-30 Best image quality as rated by DXOMark |
