Rated 90% by by TrustedReviews (May, 2011)At 400 ISO the detail is still very good, but there are visible noise artefacts.
by DPReview (Nov, 2008)The body itself is remarkably slim but the lens, even when retracted, protrudes enough to make you have to think about which of your pockets it will fit in.
Conclusion Which is better for you?
Features Key features of the Panasonic Lumix DMC-LX5 compared to the Panasonic Lumix DMC-LX3
MP10
1/1.6"
Rated 90% by by TrustedReviews (May, 2011)At 80 ISO the image quality is pretty much flawless, as was expected.
10 MP
1/1.6"
Rated 100% by by TrustedReviews (Feb, 2011)The top model in Panasonic's compact camera range, the Lumix LX3 is a high-spec compact camera aimed primarily at enthusiast and semi-professional photographers.
megapixels
| 0 MP | 10 MP | 10 MP |
Lumix DMC-LX5 by TrustedReviews (May, 2011)File size 4.4MB The level of detail is outstanding, even though the 90mm-equivalent focal length doesn't zoom in quite as far as most other compacts.
Lumix DMC-LX3 by TrustedReviews (Feb, 2011)The colour depth and level of detail are still excellent.
sensor size
Lumix DMC-LX5 by Jaganath (Dec, 2011)Pictures are awesome and almost up there with quality with micro four thirds.
Lumix DMC-LX3 by Pseudorandom-ParentsBut it is still a compact camera with a sensor 1/8 area of most DSLRs and 1/20 of full frame (mostly pro) DSLR.
wide angle lens
Lumix DMC-LX5 by N.-Ajlouny (Nov, 2010)All of these things were done really well and I am pleased to report that this camera took what my Fuji F30 could do with low light and turn it into something special with image stabilization and a nice wide angle lens.
Lumix DMC-LX3 by Wolf (Jul, 2009)Compact, solid, low light lens, extra wide angle, great flash, HD video (16x9) in a package that you can take with you anywhere.
aperture size
Lumix DMC-LX5 by John-CosenzaRather than posting more images showing how sharp the lens is (and it is a beautiful, fast lens), I'm intentionally uploading photos taken in low light-ISO up to 1600, handheld as slow as 1/4 second-with wedding photography, it's not just about razor sharpness (at least it wasn't with this couple-they loved the pictures).
zoom range
| 0x | 3.8x | 4x |
Lumix DMC-LX5 by S.-Duford (Jan, 2011)I love the 24mm f/2.8 Leica lens, the image stabilization, the RAW capability, the full manual control, and the multiple-screen formats.
Lumix DMC-LX3 by William-V.-Mcclung--ncbill (Oct, 2008)Because of the limited zoom range (35mm equivalent of 24mm to 60mm), I would not recommend the camera to those who might need more zoom for outdoor sports, etc..
body size
110 x 66 x 43 mm
109 x 60 x 27 mm
Lumix DMC-LX5 by Jeff-AskiWhen I first got it, I thought it was just as easy to carry around a Panasonic GF3 or a GH2 since the protruding lens with detachable cap makes too thick to fit in my pocket.
Lumix DMC-LX3 by Scott-Roti (Feb, 2010)Just as with my M6TTL, I can just go out with my little camera and make lovely pictures without getting wrapped up in the technology.
Performance Real world tests of Panasonic Lumix DMC-LX5 vs Panasonic Lumix DMC-LX3
battery life
400 photos
380 photos
Lumix DMC-LX5 by Soured-Customer--Soured-Customer (Dec, 2010)It's much much faster (what's the point of having a camera if you miss the shot because the camera doesn't react in time), the low light ability is far superior, the macro is wonderful, it can zoom while recording video, and the battery life is excellent.
Lumix DMC-LX3 by Roshan-Vyas--Impulse-Buyer-ExtraordinaireThe 3-inch screen was very detailed, the controls are easy to use, it had above average battery life, the flash didn't wash out pictures, and most important the picture quality was the best I've seen out of a p&s. Plus it's just a cool looking camera and feels solid in your hand.
max continuous shooting
Lumix DMC-LX5 by rd-in-sf (Sep, 2010)On the LX-5, I can only shoot 3 shots on a burst and then I have to wait until it finishes before I shoot again.
DxOMark low light performance
Lumix DMC-LX5 by Defiant10k (Jun, 2011)Applying a small amount of Noise Reduction in Lightroom brings the quality of low light pictures up quite easily.
Lumix DMC-LX3 by Ken-Walsh (Jan, 2009)I have a Fuji F30, long considered the king of compact low light cameras, and in reality the LX3 is able to get far more low light shots than the F30.

lens
Panasonic Lumix DMC-LX5 | Rated 100% by by Lowell (Dec, 2010)My reasons for buying this camera are as follows; I wanted a pocket-friendly camera to use as my main camera (not just a second camera) with good low-light capability, a wide angle lens and the auto focus and optical zoom in the HD video mode, The LX5 with the large sensor (large for a pocket-friendly camera), the fast f/2 lens (at the wide angle setting), and the excellent image stabilization meets my requirements.
Panasonic Lumix DMC-LX5 | Rated 100% by by Sameh-Abdulrhim (Dec, 2011)Although I liked the pocket ability of the S95, I chose the LX5 because of the excellent build quality, wide angle bright Leica lens and the optical zoom.
Panasonic Lumix DMC-LX5 | Rated 100% by by terryoregon--terryoregon (Sep, 2010)The ability to zoom and focus track during video is a nice plus over the LX3.
sensor
Panasonic Lumix DMC-LX5 | Rated 90% by by TrustedReviews (May, 2011)With a superb f/2 wide-angle lens, a 10.1-megapixel 1/1.6-inch CCD sensor, a three-inch 460k monitor, full manual exposure controls, Raw capture mode and the best image quality in its class, the LX3 was an instant hit, especially with photography enthusiasts looking for a compact camera that could rival the performance of their digital SLRs.
Panasonic Lumix DMC-LX5 | Rated 100% by by Gadgester--No-Time--No-Money (Dec, 2011)Now, do NOT expect this to have the same performance as a DSLR or even a Four Thirds camera, because the LX5 still uses a compact, 1/1.63" CCD sensor, which cannot match the light and color sensitivity of a DSLR sensor that is larger - the LX5's sensor is about 45 mm^2 in area whereas a Four Thirds sensor is 225 mm^2 in area and, say, the Nikon APS-C sensor in DSLR's from Nikon, Pentax and Sony measure 370 mm^2 in area.
Panasonic Lumix DMC-LX5 | Rated 100% by by kandoro (Apr, 2011)f/8..Especially on the edges...While the DSLR may still have a stronger signal/noise ratio because of the larger pixels, it's the pixel pitch of the LX5 sensor that tips the scales in it's favor for resolution...Panasonic has really improved their noise alogrithyms as in most cases I'm not afraid to shoot at ISO 1600 for prints up to 11x14"...The shutter lag is non existent and even in Raw/jpg with the review off you can shoot one shot after another with approx.
image quality
Panasonic Lumix DMC-LX5 | Rated 90% by by Photography Blog (Sep, 2010)The Panasonic Lumix DMC-LX5's maximum shutter speed is 60 seconds in Manual shooting mode and the Starry Sky Mode scene mode, which is great news if you're seriously interested in night photography.
Panasonic Lumix DMC-LX5 | Rated 80% by by Radio-Man--yarns13dynamic range REALLY is improved and EXCELLENT for a small camera, Highlight clipping or lack of, is REALLY good on the LX5 for such a small sensor (vs a dslr micro 4/3/nex etc.).
Panasonic Lumix DMC-LX5 | Rated 80% by by Radio-Man--yarns13The LX5 seems to have much more accurate color.
zoom
Panasonic Lumix DMC-LX5 | Rated 100% by by David-J.-Peebler--DJPeebz (Nov, 2010)As a Canon user, I immediately found the LX5 controls to be fully intuitive, although I must admit I'm still learning ALL of the menu controls as I crave manual control and creative flexibility!
Panasonic Lumix DMC-LX5 | Rated 100% by by Kiwi (Oct, 2010)I got the LX5 because I am traveling extensively and wanted something versatile, a camera that could be completely automatic, or totally manual, compact, flash, good zoom (90 mm), and fast shutter speed.
Panasonic Lumix DMC-LX5 | Rated 80% by by hiker (Feb, 2011)I thought I would miss the 12x zoom of the ZS1 but the LX5's 3.8x zoom seems to be adequate and I haven't missed the 12x zoom of the ZS1.
exposure
Panasonic Lumix DMC-LX5 | Rated 60% by by ghmcs (Jun, 2011)On the LX3, exposure bracketing is accessible through the exposure compensation screen.
Panasonic Lumix DMC-LX5 | Rated 100% by by ijcastIf you're in the market for a great point-and-shoot camera that has all the manual controls you can use; and it does video really well - check out the LX5 it's one of the best.
