With the fastest lens of any compact to date, the LX7 also offers an improved 10 megapixel sensor, full 1080p HD movies and an even better control system than the previous LX5 model.

Were it not for the arrival of the Sony RX100, the LX7 would have been our defacto choice as a pocketable and user-friendly compact for keen photographers that delivers excellent image quality considering the small size of its sensor, but Sony's offering produces even better images from an even smaller camera, admittedly at an even higher price.

Both modes offer Sony's Photo Creativity Mode, which lets you easily adjust background blur (aperture), brightness (exposure compensation), color (white balance), and vividness (saturation), without having to know any technical jargon.

Rather than posting more images showing how sharp the lens is (and it is a beautiful, fast lens), I'm intentionally uploading photos taken in low light-ISO up to 1600, handheld as slow as 1/4 second-with wedding photography, it's not just about razor sharpness (at least it wasn't with this couple-they loved the pictures).

As a Canon user, I immediately found the LX5 controls to be fully intuitive, although I must admit I'm still learning ALL of the menu controls as I crave manual control and creative flexibility!

While battery life has dropped considerably since the LX5, it's still tied for the top spot in the premium compact group.
Lumix DMC-LX7 by DPReview (Sep, 2012)
It's much much faster (what's the point of having a camera if you miss the shot because the camera doesn't react in time), the low light ability is far superior, the macro is wonderful, it can zoom while recording video, and the battery life is excellent.

The LX7 also benefits from the same Multi-Aspect Sensor design of the LX5, to ensure as much as possible of the sensor’s total surface area is used - thereby keeping effective resolution as high as possible regardless of what aspect you choose to shoot in.

Even I constrained ISO to <800, I still can take good pictures at night w/o turn on flash, thanks to the large lens and image stabilization.

The F2.0 Leica lens is outstanding for resolution and color clarity - I've done enlargements to poster size and still haven't reached the limits of the lens/camera combo.

The LX7 features a Raw capture mode, naturally, and although the camera's JPEG performance is very good, you get a little more when shooting Raw files, both in terms of flexibility (you can adjust white balance and exposure much more effectively post-capture) and critical image quality.
Panasonic Lumix DMC-LX7 | Rated 75% by by DPReview (Sep, 2012)
That said, even when sharpened pretty aggressively, the LX7's Raw files are barely more detailed than the JPEGs -the benefit to shooting Raw is almost solely the extra dynamic range and white balance/exposure control.

This camera is great its got alot of new things besides being able to shoot low light, and better video.....Its sensor is CMOS where as the LX5 is a CCD.

With the LX7 in video mode, I could start out with a great picture at the wide end of the lens, zoom in to the long end of the lens and the video image still stayed bright.

This immediately makes the LX7 a more engaging camera to use than the LX5; rather than having to constantly click-in the rear dial to change its mode, you can now set the aperture directly and use the rear dial to control exposure compensation or the shutter speed.

I can't say I was disappointed by the 720p video of the LX5, but full HD video is a treat - especially with memory prices as cheap as they are compared to two years ago.

The DMC-LX7 also has a fully loaded movie mode, which allows you to record Full HD video at 1080/60p, with stereo sound, for up to 30 minutes.

On first impressions the LX7 is a very attractive update to the LX5, and with its fast lens and expanded control set, rather more engaging to shoot with than its predecessor.

This won't come as any surprise to experienced photographers, but because the LX7 has an exposure mode dial and a variable maximum aperture zoom lens, there are situations where the camera doesn't or can't use the aperture value set by the ring.

Sony's RX100 is superb competition, and I was certain *IT* would be the camera that pulled me out of the Panasonic camp (I also own an old Panasonic DMC-FX50 "bridge camera" in addition to an LX5, which replaced my LX3 - plus my wife kept a Pana FX35 in her purse before she switched to Sony's slim TX9).
Panasonic Lumix DMC-LX7 | Rated 80% by by Nathaniel-Allen
