If you don't mind a slightly broader chassis still, Fuji also has the DSLR-styled 18x zoom S2800HD at the same price as the Canon, which is excellent value.

At wide angles the pictures a pretty sharp, but I really wonder why we are given 14 megapixels, whereas 10 megapixels would probably give you just as good an image, with smaller files.

Other shooting options include several burst shooting options, including 120fps and 60fps bursts that capture up to 60 shots at VGA and 1-megapixel resolution, respectively, and an HDR (high dynamic range) mode that combines photos taken at different exposures to help bring out highlight and shadow detail.

You can only view the results on a 3D TV (the TZ20 records standard MPO files), and although it isn't as effective as images taken with Panasonic's 3D Micro Four Thirds lens or the Fujifilm 3D W3, for example, it does create quite a convincing effect which particularly suits subjects that are close-up to the camera.

All of the sample images in this Review were taken using the 16 megapixel Fine JPEG setting, which gives an average image size of around 6Mb.

Indeed, according to the specifications (pg 6) the aperture has only 2 positions f3.3 and f6.6 (at the widest zoom), although you don't have a choice even there.

Outdoor shots were great, and the excellent lens lets you get the wide shot, or zoom in for very good detail (without the distortions of a digital zoom on a lesser camera).

While I love the idea of the P300s fast 1.8 lens, the P300s zoom range is around 24-100mm, whereas this camera's is 25-300mm, and I really need the zoom more than the fast lens.

The size of the camera seems perfect in my hands, not too small and but just the right size that it feels comfortable and secure in my hands.

The TZ20's lens isn't particularly fast at either the wide-angle setting, with a maximum aperture of f/3.3, or the telephoto setting, with a maximum aperture of f/5.9, but given the focal range on offer, we feel this is a compromise worth making.

As for movie quality, its AVCHD clips are sharp with good exposure and color and some of the smoothest motion I've seen from a point-and-shoot.

Much of this is only visible if you view the shots at 100 percent on screen, so those looking to make large prints or do a lot of enlarging and heavy cropping-especially of low-light shots or of things taken with the lens fully extended-will probably want to pass on this camera.

Although the manual and menu functions are well written and very intuitive, this is not a camera for the average consumer.
