At full size they don't look good, though, so its 16-megapixel resolution isn't a reason to buy.

Furthermore, with single images files as large as almost 13 MB in size from the 14.1 megapixel sensor, you have more than enough pixels to do some serious Photoshop work even without having RAW files to work with.

It features an 18X optical zoom lens, 16 Megapixel CMOS sensor, a high resolution 3-inch LCD display, Full HD video recording and, of course, a GPS receiver.

Performance Real world tests of Panasonic Lumix TZ30 vs Nikon Coolpix S9300

battery life

260 photos
200 photos
I had used Casio, Olympus, Canon, and Nikon in the past, and the Panasonic Lumix ZS20 beat them all in picture quality (the most important factor in my opinion for a camera), ease of use, battery life, number of useful features, etc..
Lumix TZ30 by v1per (Aug, 2012)
The S9300 is powered by a lithium ion rechargeable pack that is rated for 200 shots; that's OK, but keep in mind that using the zoom a lot or the movie and burst-shooting modes will kill battery life faster.
Coolpix S9300 by c|net (Mar, 2012)

max continuous shooting

The camera also has an intelligent burst mode that takes just one shot of a static object but automatically takes a burst if the object is moving.
Lumix TZ30 by Martin (May, 2012)
The camera has numerous burst modes, though most are at lower resolutions.

I have done many beach pictures of ships out in the sea, i am surprised every time with how capable the zoom is to pick up small details.

QVGA) I look forward to about two years from now where it'll be 220 fps at 14MP...Zoom shots - The optical zoom is excellent - my favorite test (at least for this camera) is to find a small item about 40-50 feet away, then zoom in on it and see what level of detail I can get.

The zoom lens is very powerful, though maximum zoom requires either a tripod or a very stable hand, and the pixel settings allow for well defined detail shots.

Overall I am very pleased and picture quality is excellent except in some cases where focusing is not quite perfect.

quality

Build quality also impresses with the TZ30 given a predominantly metal finish.
Panasonic Lumix TZ30 | Rated 80% by by TrustedReviews (Sep, 2012)
Lumix compacts have built a good reputation for shooting HD video and the TZ30 continues this trend, improving slightly on the TZ20’s headline specs with a maximum recordable quality of 1080/60p (as opposed to 1080/60i on the TZ20).
Panasonic Lumix TZ30 | Rated 80% by by TrustedReviews (Sep, 2012)
Given the importance of movie capture to digital cameras these days - especially to pocketable travel compacts like the S9300 - it comes as no great surprise to find that the S9300 is able to record high definition movies at a maximum quality setting of 1080p Full HD at 30fps, which is further complemented by 720p HD - also at 30fps.
Nikon Coolpix S9300 | Rated 70% by by TrustedReviews (Sep, 2012)

video

New for the TZ30 is the ability to record movies in the more computer-friendly MP4 format as well as the high-quality (but more HDTV orientated) AVCHD format that Panasonic has favoured in recent years.
Panasonic Lumix TZ30 | Rated 80% by by TrustedReviews (Sep, 2012)
They're still easy to use but have all sorts of extra modes and features to justify the upgrade from a cheaper model, which explains why GPS and Full HD video are included on the S9300.
Nikon Coolpix S9300 | Rated 90% by by Photography Blog (Apr, 2012)
Should you want to record high-speed movies for slow motion playback then the S9300 offers a choice of 60fps and 120fps recording, although resolution does take a pretty hefty knock at both of the high-speed settings.
Nikon Coolpix S9300 | Rated 70% by by TrustedReviews (Sep, 2012)

iso

The first one was the high levels of noise in high ISO in the ZS3 (e.g. when you shoot at night or indoors with flash); in the ZS20 the noise levels have been noticeably reduced (although it might still be found some in very high ISO, like 1000 or 1600, but the outcome is not so terrible as in the ZS3).
Panasonic Lumix TZ30 | Rated 80% by by Pepe (Oct, 2012)
At ISO 800, the TZ30 can still capture a reasonable image, although it is pretty soft.
Panasonic Lumix TZ30 | Rated 80% by by TrustedReviews (Sep, 2012)
At the lowest settings of ISO 100 and 200 the TZ30 captures noise-free images, however by as low as ISO 400 some visible noise does begin to creep into images.
Panasonic Lumix TZ30 | Rated 80% by by TrustedReviews (Sep, 2012)

sensor

Sadly, the TZ30 still lacks the ability to capture lossless Raw images for enhanced digital editing, although JPEG compression can be set to either Standard (more images) or Fine (better quality).
Panasonic Lumix TZ30 | Rated 80% by by TrustedReviews (Sep, 2012)
At it’s heart the TZ30 uses a 1/2.3in MOS sensor with an effective resolution of 14.1MP.
Panasonic Lumix TZ30 | Rated 80% by by TrustedReviews (Sep, 2012)
At ISO 800 the TZ30's built-in noise-reduction has begun to noticeably soften detail in an effort to control noise.
Panasonic Lumix TZ30 | Rated 80% by by TrustedReviews (Sep, 2012)

range

Sensitivity ranges from ISO 125 to 3200, which puts it on a par with the Canon SX260HS, Samsung WB850F and Lumix TZ30, although the Sony HX20V and Fujifilm F770EXR can go slightly higher at ISO 12,800 (albeit at reduced resolutions).
