On the camera side, dual sliders is great to quickly set aperture and shutter speed, and the viewfinder is also very good, bright and clear with 100% coverage.

Its 16-megapixel APS-C sensor is average for a DSLR, but it still does its job admirably.

All of the sample images in this Review were taken using the 16 megapixel Best JPEG setting, which gives an average image size of around 6.5Mb.

Like all DSLRs with an APS-C sensor the K-30 gives you much more control over depth of field than you'll get from the vast majority of consumer video and digital compact cameras.
K-30 by DPReview (Oct, 2012)
I can't think of any dSLR at any price that can be fitted with a 24-840mm lens (equivalent) at any price - and the higher digital noise of a small sensor camera isn't an issue when the image size is only "HD" and moving at 24 or 30 fps.

The weight is good, a nice solid feel and well balanced even with the 55-300mm lens attached.
K-30 by Mik-Ponder (Feb, 2013)
It holds its own with the best in the market as far as image quality and functionality are concerned, but is untouchable where price holds significant weight.

There are plenty of autofocus points and settings, but try as you might you won't get fast focusing performance.

Also, more solid-mass subjects seem to work better as focus points.

The DA 18-135 picture quality is really good - it's quite sharp, gives great colors, and has a handy range where I can shoot pretty wide to a decent telephoto.

To the right of the viewfinder is the rear e-dial, mainly used for changing the aperture, and the AF/AE-L button, handily placed for autofocusing and locking the exposure.

We didn't like the price quite so much - £679.99 / $899.95 with a lens is quite a lot to pay for a compact system camera, and comparable to the excellent Pentax K-5 with the same kit zoom lens.

Of course given the lossless nature of Raw files you do have much more scope to boost saturation and add sharpness to your own personal preference using dedicated image editing software such as Photoshop or similar.

It's fast, it has 2 control wheels to make operations quick and intuitive, the grip is great, it feels sturdy and well built, the pentaprism viewfinder covers 100% .... and it's weather sealed and has focus peaking.

The K-30 also offers a shutter designed for 100,000 releases, top shutter speed of 1/6000th second, optical viewfinder with nearly 100% frame coverage, 77-segment matrix meter, 3-inch LCD monitor with 920k dots, built-in dust removal and shake-reduction systems, Live View with Face Recognition AF, automatic compensation of lens distortion and lateral chromatic aberrations with DA and DFA lenses and a choice of lithium-ion or AA batteries.

Secondly, the K-30 offers a Hyper Program function which instantly switches to either the Shutter-Priority or Aperture-Priority mode from the Program mode, simply by turning either of the control dials on the grip.

I originally went to a local Inkley's to buy this camera but the white Pentax K-30 was over $1,200 with the 300mm lens, Once I told them I found the camera on Amazon for $880 with the lens they warned me about purchasing the camera online because the vendor would short the box (Sell the charger etc. separately) and give me a non-weather proof 18-55mm lens, they couldn't be more wrong.

The Pentax K-30 is a great alternative to similar offerings from the likes of Nikon, Canon and Sony, proving that Pentax can continue to deliver the goods in their core business, despite recent misfires in the world of compact system cameras.

If you've got a collection of K-mount lenses and want a full-featured camera for still lifes and landscapes, then the K-01 is well worth looking at.

zoom

At around £679 with the sealed 18-55mm DA WR zoom lens, the K-30 isn’t the cheapest mid-range DSLR on the market and would certainly benefit from some high street discounting – something that generally tends to happen within a couple of months of release.

Consequently it feels well-matched to the K-30, although it's a rather slow lens at both ends of the focal length (f3.5-5).

The K-30 is basically the Pentax K-01 in a larger, more rugged body.
Pentax K-30 | Rated 74% by by David-Pierce (Jul, 2012)
The K-30's rugged body protects solid internals, too: it shares its 16-megapixel APS-C sensor and Prime M processor with the K-01, promises six frames per second shooting, and can recording 1080p video at 30 frames per second.
Pentax K-30 | Rated 74% by by David-Pierce (Jul, 2012)
There's a fine line between feeling rugged and cheap The elements have nothing on the K-30 You can't beat an optical viewfinder Great for the basics, terrible for the harder stuff Why can't anyone fix the camera menu?
